A few good laughs but downs the rest with slapstick humor.

Some of Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi’s comedy is just the right amount of silly. It is not situational, so it is not germane to the story. But, it is still funny because you can’t stop laughing and wondering how they might have thought of such a sequence. And yet, it is not the kind that convinces you that the writers were on something while putting this together. Unfortunately, the silliness is inconsistent and the non-slapstick humor too little.

There seems to be a flicker in the writing that can be fanned into a really enjoyable film.

The slapstick humor is just like any other slapstick humor, people falling, slapping each other, puns on abusive words, etc. The overall story though is a fairly amusing one about mistaken identities. Unfortunately, it drags on a bit too long and gets mildly repetitive.

I reckon the repetition doesn’t feel too bad because of the actors doing their bit. Jimmy Sheirgill must have said the words, “tera bhai” ad nauseum but only in the end did it begin to feel like the writers had no other creative way of making us laugh through him. The timing is always spot on. It also helps that Sonakshi Sinha and Jassie Gill don’t go over-the-top even once despite the genre. Interestingly, Piyush Mishra is the least memorable, even though he does his regular bit of deadpan comedy.

This is the kind of comic story that could have made us laugh from beginning to end. But, it feels like the writers picked juvenile humor over the kind that they really enjoy writing to stay safe. Which is why, I don’t feel like completely dismissing the film. There seems to be a flicker in the writing that can be fanned into a really enjoyable film. Till then, though give it a watch in passing.

Thumbs up, by Subhash K Jha, Bolly Spice : ...Far cleverer than it is willing to admit, Happy Phirr Bhaag Jayegi sparkles with a sense of parodic profundity brought on by characters who are at a loose end, and not afraid to tackle their situation headlong with humour and fortitude.... full review

Thumbs up, Bollywood Hungama : ...On the whole, HAPPY PHIRR BHAG JAYEGI turns out to be a worthy sequel. Despite the loose ends, it manages to make audiences laugh thanks to its funny dialogues and situations, clean humour and bravura performances.... full review

Thumbs up, by Devesh Sharma, Filmfare : ...The film has a cracking first half which just zooms by. The second half lags a bit but only because the director is trying to tie all the strands together. But overall, the impact doesn't waver and that's what counts in the long run...... full review

Thumbs up, by Johnson Thomas, Free Press Journal : ...Neither the sassy xenophobic jokes nor the playful mocking of neighbouring countrymen seems out of place or in bad taste here. Thumbs up, by Rachit Gupta, Times of India : ...HPBJ is just as good as HBJ, if not better. It has good music too and for a change, the songs actually add value to the storytelling process. This film takes the ideas of the original and it adds a zany new twist to the proceedings. The goofball humour gets a little over-the-top at times, but that’s exactly what works for this madcap comedy.... full review

So-So, by Anna MM Vertticad, annavetticadgoes2themovies : ...Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi is not without flaws, but they are overshadowed by the absence of references to farts, poop and animal backsides, homophobia, misogyny and other ugly biases that have repeatedly reared their heads in the kind of comedies Sinha herself has been a part of over the years. Pleasant and engaging is an option in this genre – thank you, Mr Aziz, for knowing that.... full review

So-So, by Moumita Bhattacharjee, Bollywood Life : ...Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi has its moments but don’t expect it to be better than the original. So-So, by Mayur Sanap, Deccan Chronicle : ...Overall, Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi has a funny first half but pales and drags in the second. Sure the comedy is over the top and silly but if that is your cup of tea then a moderate entertainment for couple of hours is guaranteed.... full review

So-So, by Uday Bhatia, Live Mint : ...Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi isn’t a total bust: there are intermittent laughs, and the Indian and Pakistani characters are treated with generosity. So-So, by Kunal Guha, Mumbai Mirror : ...Aziz is also credited for helming Dulha Mil Gaya, a film that brought Shah Rukh Khan, Fardeen Khan and Sushmita Sen together only to comprehensively prove that the trio should never share the screen again. So-So, by Rohit Vats, News18.com : ...Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi is a feel good film which you’re not likely to remember much about after a while. That’s its major drawback. You’ll have a good time, but there isn't much to make you come back to it. Nevertheless, it’s 137-minute of sheer fun. So-So, by Sukanya Verma, Rediff : ...What's nice is that the new Happy isn't a picture of wannabe whimsy. Sonakshi Sinha exudes spunk and sees the airheaded premise for what it is. Its true source of cheer lies in Jimmy Shergill and Piyush Mishra's bonhomie and banter.... full review

Thumbs down, by Bobby Sing, Bobby Talks Cinema.com : ...In all, this can easily be called an unrequired below average sequel of an average original. Thumbs down, by Rahul Desai, Film Companion : ...Unfortunately for him, and us, too much of the film’s two-plus hours are focused on trying to make us empathize with Sonakshi Sinha’s Punjabi accent. And her backstory. And her spirit. And her chemistry with Khushi. And her resolution. She is no Tanu, and actually drives us to miss Diana Penty’s Happy, who was ironically the weakest link of Happy Bhag Jayegi.... full review

Thumbs down, by Raja Sen, Hindustan Times : ...Unfortunately, Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi relies too hard on obvious attempts at humour at the expense of the Chinese characters — from their names conveniently made to sound like expletives, to the way Indian characters can’t tell them apart. This is lazy, juvenile and unnecessary. Inadvertent as it may be, the best joke is on us. It is when Chinese men, looking into a passport and then at a person across a table, mistake Sonakshi Sinha for Diana Penty. It isn’t their fault, you see. We all look alike.... full review

Thumbs down, by Suhani Singh, india today : ...There are many tasteless jokes cracked at the expense of Chinese especially their appearance and gays. The puns and lost-in-translation moments here often fall flat. The worst treatment is bestowed to Piyush Mishra's Afridi who apart from being Bagga's punching bag is made to grope young Chinese women while on the run. That all of the idiocies occur in a country as vigilant as China is harder to imagine.... full review

Thumbs down, by Shubhra Gupta, indian express : ...And most of that is down to Sinha. She gets top billing but there’s no sparkle in her performance. The film has just a few places where you crack a smile, especially when you see Jassi Gill as the Chinese-speaking ‘desi’ trying to help his country-folk out. He is about the only tolerable thing in this enterprise. The rest makes you want to run.... full review

Thumbs down, by Mohar Basu, MiD DAY : ...Singularly unfunny, and borderline offensive, it's hard to believe that a compelling cast could make something this mediocre. My sympathies are, however, with Sinha. After being blamed for being an arm candy throughout her career, she finally began headlining films with some meat. Hopefully, we'll see her return with something more promising before we lose her to films like R…Rajkumar, again.... full review

Thumbs down, by Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV : ...The primary problem with Happy Phirr Bhaag Jayegi isn't that it is pure drivel. That is something that could be pardoned in Bollywood laugh riot. But here, the hilarity quotient is low. The precursor had delivered on at least a part of the promise inherent in the quirky premise. This one goes through the motions without ever coming close to finding a genuine rhythm.... full review

Thumbs down, by Rajeev Masand, News18.com : ...Crucially, the new film is missing the freshness of the earlier one, and fails to give us characters that are especially interesting in any way. Writer-director Mudassar Aziz can’t seem to ground the film emotionally, or raise the stakes in a way that makes us care for any of these folks. Instead of coherent plotting we get a sense the filmmakers decided to throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. How else do you explain a ridiculous gay subplot that feels like it belongs in a different film? They even bring back Diana Penty, the first Happy, and Guddu (Ali Fazal) from the previous film, but they have precious little to do.... full review

Thumbs down, by Nandini Ramnath, Scroll.in : ...Mudassar Aziz’s struggle to steer Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi smoothly to the finishing line is summed up in the frequently asked question: “What exactly is going on?”... full review

Thumbs down, by Namrata Joshi, The Hindu : ...The most inspired moments of inanity are reserved for Jimmy Sheirgill and he responds well with his poker-faced comic timing. Be it telling a character called Pha that he has “sabun type ka naam” or berating Afridi for “zakhmon pe Urdu chhidakna” (to rub salt, nay Urdu, on the wounds) or suddenly breaking into a dance to ‘Yaara o yaara’ while dressed as Superman on stage. If there is yet another in the series in the offing Aziz had better call it Happy Ke Peeche Bagga Phir Bhag Jayega.... full review

Punjabi 'Kudi',escape from her house and bunch of people chasing her is the background of the film, some part of the film has comic timing and dialogue.

In a new Happy (Sinha) part two Bang, but we do not forget the old happy (Penti). This time, girls and mixed characters are roaming around China, a big brother of Pakistan, where the first film was established. She came up with a herd of freshness. The sequel tries to mix in a complex but like the big hearted Punjabis, crooked sugar, a song or two, and a series of sequences that are meant to be fun but are flat and dull. The film does not able to cast any impression on the audience. The comic timing is also missing except few scenes.

New Entrants Denil Smith and Jason Thom, 'Chinese' appear as badges, and get plenty of screen time. The familiar character, Jimmy Sheergill and Piyush Mishra, rearrange their Bagga-Afridi 'Jodi', but even these stalwarts can not do much to lift the film.

This is the most ludicrous plot on which a film is made. Even Happy (2) says so when she learns the reason for her kidnapping. So as soon as you realise this and thereafter accept the illogical part to the story it's then that you (just) might start enjoying the film. And even then it is amusing only in very small portions.

No wonder then that audience bhaag gayi from this film and made it a commercial dud.
