War 2

wogma rating: Don't bother (?)

quick review:

Reasonably decent conceptualisation of fight sequences with tacky execution. The rest—patriotism, plot, etc—is anyway only padding around the cool-on-paper action.

For starters, it is not about war. And no, that is not giving the movie away. At best, it is giving the title away. The good news then is, if you are looking for aggrandisation of war, you won't find it here. What is it about then? It is the wish and vision to show a lot of action around something that will sell. And, of course, that something is patriotism.

The actors are able to give some weight to the goings-on, not necessarily through their performance but their earnestness.

Which might have still worked, if only, the fight sequences weren't mostly shabby CGI and edits taking over actual action choreography. It is borderline annoying because you see all the money spent on awesome, non-standard locations, but zero creativity in the execution.

It is a given that almost anything cool is clearly a rip-off from something we have seen in Hollywood. But that's not my complaint about the creativity. It's frustrating that it is not copied well despite the resources.

And if they are at this stage in their main aim—action—it would be silly to expect creativity in the writing, right? Like even simple things, such as having loftier aims. Why are spies from the YRF Spy Universe only saving India and not the world, not even the sub-continent? What is the endgame? As in what are they expecting to achieve by doing what they are doing?

Given the lack of logic, it is decent that there is some sense of flow and logic in the details. And the actors together—Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, Kiara Advani—are able to give some weight to the goings-on, not necessarily through their performance but their earnestness.

Yep, too little for the three-hour do. Except for the five-minute dance when Hrithik Roshan does his thing. I, for one, might not get over how well he can move his feet. Alas, not nearly enough.

So-So, by Ria Sharma, Free Press Journal : ...War 2 is a mixed bag - a treat for die-hard action lovers and fans of Hrithik and Jr NTR, but not quite the adrenaline-fuelled blockbuster it could have been. It thrives on star power, slick action, and grand visuals but stumbles with an overlong runtime, exaggerated stunt logic, and underwhelming dialogues.... full review

So-So, by "Manmath Sahu ", fullhyd.com : ...In the end, War 2 is a solid one-time watch for anyone seeking a pure cinematic adrenaline rush despite its weak storyline - and an absolute keeper for die-hard action enthusiasts. The movie ends on a high note, teasing a bigger and more emotionally charged next chapter, with the same duo reprising their roles. Let's hope for a better story next time.... full review

So-So, by Rishabh Suri, Hindustan Times : ...Mostly because their characters are not all that interesting. Towards the interval, there is an interesting turn of events. Groundbreaking? No.... full review

So-So, by Shyamoo Pathak, India TV : ...War 2 seems like a shiny but hollow action thriller which has been completely covered by star power. The film takes you to foreign locations, grand sets and many wonderful places. The film takes the story from Spain to Manali and many countries of the world, but still, its impact is not very special. But if you are fond of action films, then you can watch it again. But if you like to watch a sensitive and logical story, then you may find it boring and deafening. The film is definitely worth watching once.... full review

So-So, by Isha Sharma, NewsBytes : ...Nothing you haven't seen already; 2.5/5 stars The Spy Universe has overstayed its welcome and completely run out of ideas and creative elements. Everything that it had to offer has already been shown, and it's now running on a ventilator, trying to survive through logic-defying action sequences. Toward the climax, a character says, "Ye kya raita faila rakha hai?" I have the same question. 2.5/5 stars.... full review

So-So, by Rishil Jogani, Pinkvilla : ...Hrithik Roshan is the heart of the film. He looks incredible and plays Kabir with restraint, letting subtle expressions do the heavy lifting. His maniacal laugh is chilling and adds a layer of menace. Jr NTR owns the screen with his intensity. His commanding presence makes Vikram a worthy counterpart to Kabir. Kiara Advani is solid as Kavya but feels underused.... full review

So-So, by Dhaval Roy, Times of India : ...War 2 offers high-octane moments, striking visuals, and polished production to make for a passable big-screen experience. Strictly watchable only if you’re in it purely for the action and spectacle.... full review

Thumbs down, by Pranati A S, Deccan Herald : ...Now that even ‘War 2’ has failed to make an impact, director Ayan, who’s given hits like ‘Wake Up Sid’ and ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, should accept action is not his strong forte.... full review

Thumbs down, by Simran Singh, DNA : ...Overall, War 2 is a disappointment of giant size. Easily the weakest of the YRF Spy Universe. After watching this, I don't have much expectation from the next instalment, which is Alia Bhatt, Sharvari-starrer Alpha.... full review

Thumbs down, by Iqbal Pervez, Glamsham.com : ...Pritam’s music is average. You may like a song while watching it, but it is worth forgetting as soon as you step out of the theatre. The background score makes an impact in some scenes, especially the action and emotional moments.... full review

Thumbs down, by Vineeta Kumar, india today : ...An unimpressive BGM (particularly the lion roar for NTR), and misplaced songs do not satiate your excitement about watching a larger-than-life spy drama on the big screen. When the credits roll, you are left with the faint hum of jet engines (running on a racetrack), and the feeling that the only real war here is between logic and budget. And the budget wins.... full review

Thumbs down, by Shubhra Gupta, indian express : ...I’m also sure NTR Jr missed his fizzy RRR co-star Ram Charan when swinging through the air, and Kiara Advani, playing the sprightly army woman Kavya, missed an actual fleshed-out role in this boys-and-their-toys flick.... full review

Thumbs down, by Mayank Shekhar, MiD DAY : ...Sadly, the same can’t be said for the sensory overload, with non-stop stunts, that makes for War 2. It’s something so charmless, humourless that instead of even having senseless fun, you’re forever forced to frickin’ take it seriously as well.... full review

Thumbs down, by Sameer Ahire, Movie Talkies : ...War 2 is a waste—of money, time, and talent. What was marketed as a high-octane face-off between two megastars turns into one of the most tedious, logic-defying, and poorly crafted big-budget films in recent years. For a franchise that once promised adrenaline-pumping thrills, this is the equivalent of serving a gourmet meal with stale leftovers.... full review

Thumbs down, by Radhika Sharma, NDTV : ...Any war is about choice. Decisions are made, and sides are picked. Films are also about choice. Wish War 2 makers had thought long and hard about what they wanted to say and why. Maybe choose to kill a lead character? At least then, we'd go home with some sympathies for the dead character, just like Jai from Sholay.... full review

Thumbs down, by Sakshi Salil Chavan, Outlook India : ...The film pivots on Kabir and Vikram (NT Rama Rao Jr), whose relationship twists between alliance and rivalry. Yet, the real adversary is the spy genre itself. The plot stumbles over cardboard-cutout templates, predictable beats, and excess spectacle. Kabir goes rogue, taking a job from KALI—an international power bloc led by Gautam Gulati (K.C. Shankar)—but remains tethered to India’s greater good. NT Rama Rao Jr is the archetypal lone wolf, defying logic as he clings to a plane or decimates armies single-handedly. These two men operate as military-grade tanks, impervious to injury long enough to distract from a storyline that threads random, often unnecessary plot points.... full review

Thumbs down, by Nandini Ramnath, Scroll.in : ...The action directors seemed to have worked the hardest, staging encounters on land and in the air between the well-matched heroes. Anil Kapoor enters the YRF Spy Universe as the spy chief Vikrant, but he is no match for the avuncular Luthra. Varun Badola plays the minister Sarang.... full review

Thumbs down, by Anuj Kumar, The Hindu : ...You can see that a lot of money has been spent on choreographing action sequences in global tourist hotspots, but none of them have the intensity that could bring one to the edge of one’s seat. Curiously, the camera cuts to Jr. NTR’s face in the middle of the action, slowing down the sequence unnecessarily. The face-offs between Kabir and Vikram look like variants of a soft drink commercial, where the star would come up with a punchline about winning over your fear. It’s cinema without fizz!... full review
