7 khoon maaf

quick review: This movie is worth watching just for Priyanka Chopra's performance. The rest of the lead cast is only a bonus. Now how I wish, there was a little bit of a surprise in the narration or at least I understood even half of why the characters behaved the way they did. Now if the only explanation is weird attracts weird and together they all get weirder, either I didn't get the film or it is one zany experience that didn't go down all that well with me. And yet I wouldn't have wanted to miss watching this one.

So-So by Baradwaj Rangan, Blogical Conclusion, The New Sunday Express ...7 Khoon Maaf – at its best – feels like a rambling anecdote with a killer punch line. Rahul:

Can't wait for this one, just can't.

Rema Anand:

Just waiting for this one- but somehow the promos gives a surreal feeling - like guzaarish, or even worse - saawariya (God forbid!) - I mean, I hope hope hope that vishal wont go down the bhansali way!! (God forbid again!!!)

Resume Services:

Awesome Review... Thanks for this.. I am going to watch this movie tomorrow. I was waiting for this movie or ling time.

Deboshree:

I don't know if I should watch this movie or not. Reading your review makes me want to have a shot at it but I find my hopes building and I don't want to spoil my weekend in case it turns out plain bad. I am confused.

Nevertheless, fabulous review!

Jitaditya:

What do you think of the scenes in the end credits?...People stopped at teh stairs and watched those scenes for a last twist that never came...

sudhan from callezee:

I was waiting for this movie or long time
- but somehow the promos gives a surreal feeling

Bollywood Gossip:

I generally agree with the review. I found it bland in general.I think my expectation was too high. I think Indian cinema is getting there but not there yet when you get to see what you expect to see and then even get more out of it. For some reason felt Priyanka dint fit the character too well.Bollywood Gossip

Shruti Bansal:

Hey Meetu I visit your site every week and sometimes more than that but never left a comment before . However this movie made me want to share my thoughts with you , my take.

I Liked Saat Khoon Maaf primarily because of the ending that made the murders and the entire story meaningful and gave it depth. Wondering if that is what instigated Vishal Bhardwaj to make this movie and why Ruskin Bond is Ruskin Bond. The story is a refletion of human nature , its failing and its ability to redeem itself, humanity's biggest saving grace and gift. We all make choices and at every cross road in life we can chose either of two ways . It is how we face dissapointment and hurt in life that defines character.The protagonist in this movie comes across as vulnerable at the same time someone who doesnt know how do deal with the dissapointments in life.But after running after happiness and floundering a lot along the way she is fnally jolted out of her stupor through her own disastrous actions. I loved the last line where she says meine saat khoon kiye hai and it is this line in the movie that summarises her journey. This movie essentially points towards the truth that all paths eventually lead there and it really doesnt matter how long one took to get there , it was needed for you to get there. There is no defined path or way , each story is unique.And what matters is who you are in the present , sachche pashchatap se sare gunah mit jate hain. Sussane wasnt meant to find true love ,she was meant to learn to accept dissapointments.As they say you have to earn true love and it takes lifetimes to get there . Her quest is on and she will eventually get there.

7 Khoon Maaf- A Justification

savita:

Which one is the 7th murder - i dont understand

meetu:

@Rema I did remember your comment while watching the film. And 7 khoon maaf does have that kind of a feel but not overwhelmingly so, there is other stuff happening, so its not the focus

@Resume Services Thanks!

@Deboshree Thanks! Did you finally watch it?

@Jitaditya I liked one sentence that Arun says in the end credits, else they were alright. They didn't bother me nor did they leave a mark.

@Bollywood gossip really? you didn't think Priyanka fit the role? I absolutely loved her in it and the fact that they didn't glamorize her looks-wise.

@Shruti loved your take on the film!

@Swetha good one! :)

@Savita it's open to interpretation

Shruti Bansal:

[comment edited because parts of it give the movie away]

she holds herself responsible for the death as she tried to kill herself but didnt have the courage to . She also realises that she is a coward and these two things combined help her to mend her ways .

Jatin:

One of best picture which i had seen till now

G10:

I like this particular review only for the tone of uncertainty, or rather the dilemma -- to like or not to like 7KM. While most of the reviews have opted for taking clear sides -- either dump the film or put it on the pedestal, I love the honesty with which you have expressed the difficulty of doing either to 7KM. I agree, it is likable but don't totally deny that something is missing; what though is difficult to point out and a matter of debate.

I like your review so much that more than the film, I want to focus on the review itself. To my mind, the feeling of uncertainty that you express is so contrasting to the tone of authority with which critics usually write, that your writing is endearing. Instead of the power that reviewers usually bestow upon themselves to become the demigods, who can decide the destiny of a film with the pungency of their words, your review expresses struggle, the struggle to make sense of the film. If nothing else, it brings you closer to the people you are writing for, who perhaps are stuck in the dilemma themselves.

Anyhow, I watched the film a few days after it was released. And before going, I read all the reviews, including yours. [Needless to say, yours was the most influential for aforementioned reasons.:)] So I went to the movie aware of experiencing a similar dilemma. However, to my own surprise, just as the movie started I felt myself giving in to the story and to how it was being told…piece by piece, section by section, husband after husband.

I sank in the seat and my mind didn’t waver at all --all disbelief was suspended. And, only when that happened did I realize that Vishal is indeed a gifted film maker; he knows how to use his craft, most of all how much. I did not feel the space for questions like why and how. Whenever a question did come to my mind, the succinct voice over answered it, or the background score dissuaded me from pondering too much over it and persuade me to move on. I enjoyed yielding to Vishal's craft, and because that rarely happens in this age of reason, I think his work is commendable.

After much thought, I have come to regard this film for two reasons – for pushing some of us to suspend all disbelief, and for leaving some of us uncertain (and by extension somewhat disempowered.)

khush:

hi... i dint understand the end of the movie... the 7th murder...

meetu:

@G10 and every once in 100 reviews you come across a comment that makes it all worth it. :) thanks you so much for your lovely, detailed comment. Overwhelmed.

I could write on and on about how I perceive my role as a reviewer. But, I'll stick to - I am a part of the audience, I go there to like a movie and try my best to do that. Dissing a movie - anyone can do :)

Thank you, once again!

@khush yep! i have two interpretations i'm struggling with too :)

Tarun:

Priyanka has done a fab job. All other actors have also done well. By doing this type of role priyanka has proved that there is no one like her among all bollywood actresses.

G-10:

@MEETU
"I am a part of the audience, I go there to like a movie and try my best to do that. Dissing a movie - anyone can do :)"

I can't agree more with you, and this time you have demonstrated this so well. :)

Makarand:

@meetu I don't know why the ambivalence in deciding why the movie was good or not..

I had no such issues...

I thought it was terrible.. Only saving grace was Priyanka. The worst on the cast was Vivaan Shah.. What was he trying to do? Ape SRK?

Aditi:

Not good..dosnt linger on. was expecting better.
VB's movies demand superb actors. He should stop using the stars like Priyana, John Abraham who doesnt live up to the performance expected. I wish Tabu was there.

meetu:

@G-10 :)

@Makarand oh well, to each his own - even indecisiveness :)

JJ:

poetic alright, but not engaging
