When films like this come, I hate being outside India. Either watch a shitty rip or wait months for the DVD. :(
Gayi bhains paani mein!
Ek Haseena Thi as well! Now I have preconceived notions about this film being good.
Wait, wait, the Johny Gaddar guy is directing this! That changes my preconceived notions about this one. Might actually turn out to be good.
@Vishal and Meetu: As I said, I am nitpicking. I didn't really "mind" the accent (what with me not being a native speaker at all), it just sounded off to me. It just could have been done better. That's all.
@meetu - I am no expert, it just did not sound right to me. Found this article, this captures the essence of what I meant: http://www.firstpost.com/living/et-tu-bachchan-saab-then-fall-tagore-238244.html
Nit-picking, I know, but still. :)
Also, there was no need for the Durga parallel in the end.
@meetu - The accent for Ekla Chalo Re didn't sound right.
Watched it, definitely a very good watch. Will definitely see it again once the DVD is available. I could see why comparisons were made to Kill Bill, but the treatment is quite different.
Also, it was nice to see the film remain intelligent throughout. The hacking bit was portrayed rather realistically as well.
Only grouse - Amitabh Bachchan.
Wohooo! After a long time it feels that there is a movie that you really really love. Will have to wait for a rip (the sad travails of studying in a country where there are no bollywood releases, except SRK :@)
:(. I was expecting a lot from this.
Watch "Socha Na Tha". And I think Rockstar will be great. Another reason to believe so is Taran Adarsh's review - it seems he could not understand the movie. :)
Happy Birthday! And keep up the good work. This is the only site I trust for Bollywood reviews. :)
Sigh ... one more movie that I won't have to bother about hunting on the torrents. And before I get chastised, no Bollywood movie releases where I live. :)
Taran Adarsh's review of Aarakshan - http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/movies/review/14307/index.html
Really looking forward to this movie.
From what I have heard, the Desi Version is "toned-down" so as to be in sync with the "desi audience". So you did watch the right version.
I loved that aeroplane scene in the first movie. Looks like there will be nothing similar in this one. :(
It was not as over the top as Singh is King (the last Anees film that I watched), nor was it all over the place as Dabangg was. Of course, the side characters are dispensed off without an explanation, and each character is a caricature. Nothing unexpected happens, yet somehow it does not get boring.
Then there is Asin, so why not watch it! :P
I am shocked. You make the film sound almost "watchable". I might actually see this now.
The music (apart from that track by "Bhayanak Maut") is quite enjoyable. And as you say, if it's got Anurag Kashyap it can't be bad.
Another senseless movie that will rake in the moolah at the box office. :(
Here - a music review for you!

Can't wait for this one, just can't.
I guess I entered a wrong email address previously - was surprised to see I had only posted one comment previously! :P
"Add to must watch list", "watch again and again and again". Seriously. It was a decent movie, nothing more than that. Typical Hollywood comedy with nothing special in it. There was nothing in it to justify the "must watch" tag that seems to have given rather generously.
It might have to do with the volume, but I do tend to notice the trend that all Hollywood movies are rated very favourably on wogma. Sorry, but most of them are not that great - I see too many "must watch" and "buy the dvd already" there. Seems like we Indians enjoy watching Bollywood nonsense (see the success of Golmaal 3, Housefull and compare it to mostly unfavourable reviews) but like praising all that is Hollywood.
Watched it yesterday, the court scenes were definitely stale. The emotional scenes were mostly good, but the movie felt undercooked. Here was a novel idea (at least for mainstream bollywood) but it was not developed further. The performances (apart from the doctor - I didn't like him at all) were good.
Nonetheless, it was a good watch. Could have been a lot better though.
I watched this movie last night and I must say that I loved it. It moves along at a fast pace, respecting the intelligence of the viewer as events roll along at a fast place. The fast geek talk is actually enjoyable (to me), interspersed as it is with technically accurate terms.
The dialogues are witty and fun. I would say it is a must watch.
As I see it, this sounds like it is "inspired" from Back to the future. I don't see the charm in this movie.
And I just realised that I have been using two email accounts on this site. So now there are two Rahuls here. :D
I couldn't watch the trailer. I can't see myself surviving this movie if I am indeed coerced into watching it.
Despite being at home, this is one movie I don't think I will be watching at the cinemas. There is something special about Abhishek, something so special that I can not stand the sight of him for 10 mins, let alone 2 hours or whatever the run time of this movie is.
My prejudices aside, the reviews so far have been utterly disappointing.
@meetu:
If it is still in the cinemas by the time I get home, I will watch it. :P
Must say I am uber disappointed - I was expecting much, much more. Ah well - I think I will still watch it. Am home for the summer - need something to watch. :P
Had to post this - TOI rips it apart.

@meetu - There have been very good movies which have gone unnoticed (commercially) because of a lack of hype.
I have no idea as to the amount of TV time the trailers are currently enjoying in India so I do not know whether they have overdone it. Regardless, a Hrithik movie after 2.5 years was going to create a lot of hype anyways. The fact that it is a home production (brilliant commercial track record) only serves to add to the amount of expectations. Add a critically accliamed director in the mix and you know where we are heading.
In short - expectations are (and were bound to be) sky high.
That said, I personally believe that with such foundations if you are not able to deliver a good product which meets the audience's expectations you have failed at your task. If the movie is good, it will succeed.
Here is a review of the film I found (via IMDB)
http://showbizcafe.com/en/reviews/kites/403
Leaving the review aside, I am excited for this movie. Rakesh Roshan might not make path breaking movies, but he does make them very enjoyable. However, it is the prospect that Anurgag Basu at the helm of affairs that excites me - he is not known to make "proper masala movies".
Let's see what we get - I do anticipate an immensely enjoyable affair at least.
OK, this comment is not related to the movie (I am still waiting to see that - thinking of catching it in the cinema as I am in India for the summer).
A friend of mine has this blog where he posts quizzes which make you guess the lyrics of bollywood songs / movies by looking at pictures. I have found it to be quite interesting ... maybe there are more bollywood fans here that might be interested in it. Here's the link:
http://thequark.wordpress.com
Just realized something - when I have nothing better to do - I can watch these very predictable "Girl meets boy or vice versa" bollywood movies easily. I know what is going to happen - but it is the general feel good environment about it that makes it bearable.
I guess that's what years of Bollywood does to you - when I am totally bored I would rather watch a boring bollywood movie than watch a serious hollywood flick. :P
@Bollyfan:
I am not Comparing Hangover and Housefull per se - I am merely clubbing them together as films which club together an improbable chain of events. That said, I agree with you that in Hangover, the director stays true to the characters while the same can definitely not be said of Housefull. If you ask Taran Adarsh he would tell you that you are supposed to leave your brains at home for films of this kind ... I am prepared to leave my senses at home but if the director takes liberties with the story line that insult my intelligence then I do have an issue with the film.
All flaws aside, Housefull is only working because there is nothing else on offer right now. The ICC T20 WC is turning into a "dance to please the rain Gods" and I don't think the soap operas on TV have improved one little bit. :P
As for Sajid Khan and the band of copy cats he might inspire - Bhagwan Bachaye Inse.
@Bollyfan: Yeah absolutely. In retrospect there is really nothing in the movie, but then most insane comedies are supposed to have nothing. There was nothing in "The Hangover" either - which is supposed to be brilliant and all that.
Sadly, there is no masala movie releasing till Kites hits the floor on the 21st of May - I expect Housefull to mostly live up to its name till then. Maybe Badmaash Company can sneak up and deliver something - sadly YRF doesn't have a stellar record in recent times (in terms of market revenue).
Yeah, the movie is watchable simply because of the dearth of even half-decent Hindi movies released recently. It is no more than what you expect, but somehow it still manages to make you laugh a few times. And yes, Deepika looks amazing. :)
Ouch. :(
Will definitely watch this one, but waiting for your review of Lahore.
Oh, and can you fix the links in the review. They all point to the review itself.
@Vishal - Meetu, as far as I know, does not review Hollywood movies.
Let's see - "The thing about IB is that it appeals to your basest instincts." "OSO is a gem you will want to have in your collection".
First of all, I find the idea of IB appealing to your basest instincts quite revolting. It is a brilliant movie, no doubt, but I would disagree with the fact that there was pleasure to be drawn from the massacres in the film. One could reflect upon them for sure - but to draw pleasure from them is a bridge too far.
As for OSO - yes it was an enjoyable watch but I have no idea why you would call it a gem that you must have in your collection. When it comes to comedies, the all time classics like the Munnabhai series, Hera Pheri (only the first one) and Jaane bhi do yaaron are the ones I would recommend to anyone or keep in my collection. Certainly not OSO.
@Manu : We could all try to improve our favourite review site with our suggestions and gloss over life advices. ;) What say?
District 9 was a film that I loved a lot, so I guess I was expecting a very impassioned review across all boards. :) I guess writing a review without giving the movie away ain't an easy task.
And now a little selfish request - would it be possible to have reviews of more English movies on wogma (since this is the only site that I come for reviews).:)
There were some interesting movies like Moon and Sherlock Holmes which could be reviewed here. Just a thought.
Thanks for the reply Meetu.
No disrespect meant, but I have a little bone to pick with this review. :) It could have been a little more detailed - there were some little details that I loved in the movie. The South African accent (not a surprise since most of the actors are South African), the action sequences resemble Halo. Somehow it does not seem to do full justice to the movie, does not convey the passion that one might find in the reviewer if a film is genuinely liked.
District 9 and Up were released in India on 11 September 2009 - what is the rationale behind reviewing them now? Reviewing a film after most of the people have seen it is kind of pointless in my opinion.
One of those rare occasions where I heartily disagree with the review of the movie. It couldn't make me laugh, it couldn't make me cry - it did manage to keep me completely disinterested during its entire course. Littered with intelligent dialogues like "Thank God I didn't have a condom that day" this movie, for me, was sheer nonsense. Not to mention the idealistic politician who somehow has the authority to host his own impromptu talk show on Doordarshan, checks emails from disgruntled citizens personally, invites a young boy on a Delhi trip without consulting the family, the family allows the trip telling him that all he has to do is not tell his father that he is his son (so easy for a 12 year old as we all know) and of course the Mom thinks that the dad will remain in contact with his son and never figure out the truth. Give me a break!
