Review (no word limit): You get a strong “wannabe” sense as you walk out of watching Veere Di Wedding. It wants to be chic both stylistically and conceptually, it wants to be feminist in its take in terms of women having an opinion and wanting to stand up to it, it wants to be open about a woman’s sexual needs. So, even it does all of that technically, the ‘want’ to be all of that is too on-the-face and takes away from the fact that it is a film.
we still are a long way away from having the concept translate to a meaningful or even a fun film.
Sure, the space it gives sexuality and sexual orientation is laudable for a woman-centric film. But, just because it is about women and sisterhood, doesn’t mean it can be haphazard and unfocused. Also, it is great that the film doesn’t go about bashing men like a film with four, girl friends could have easily become, and any film about two or more boy friends often becomes. But, the story still ought to have meat rather than four characters with four stories and lifestyles that are just ticks on boxes for typical character types.
Fortunately, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania fill their character types’ shoes convincingly enough. Alas, Kareena Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor are more functional than anything else. The writing doesn’t even attempt to be different. For all its woman-centeredness, I doubt the film will still pass the Bechdel test. Also, there is just no depth to the characters or the relationships – be they woman-woman, man-woman, or man-man.
Also, the story arc is that of coming-of-age or almost all characters – lead and supporting. That’s a whole lot of people coming-of-age in the span of a few days. That is also a whole lot of convenient writing. It doesn’t help that this 2-hour film feels too long at mid-point. That’s never a good sign.
So, kudos for having given this a shot, conceptually. But, we still are a long way away from having the concept translate to a meaningful or even a fun film.

Thumbs up, by Subhash K Jha, Bolly Spice : ...This film is great fun to watch. The quartet of gorgeous women are more entertaining than the four guys in Dil Chahta Hai. One of whom had famously said, ‘You can’t improve on perfection.’ ... full review
Thumbs up, Bollywood Hungama : ...On the whole VEERE DI WEDDING has a bold theme that defies stereotypes and delivers a shock value. At the box office, the multiplex audience and the youth [especially female] will patronize the film in a big way. Watch it for all the fun and madness created by the four leading ladies. ... full review
Thumbs up, by Tushar P. Joshi, Bollywood Life : ...Veere Di Wedding is unapologetic and brash in its message that women can have as much fun as men, if not maybe a little more! Watch it for the all girl ensemble cast that delivers a knockout punch with their performance. ... full review
Thumbs up, by Devesh Sharma, Filmfare : ...Director Shashanka Ghosh has managed to develop the right chemistry between his four leads and that’s the film’s greatest strength -- that beneath all the cuss words and sex jokes you get a whiff of genuine friendship. It smells like teen spirit despite the fact that the school friends are now all grown up -- they still remain bubbly lasses at heart... ... full review
Thumbs up, by Raja Sen, NDTV : ...The cast is solid all around, but other performers I'd single out are Sukesh Arora as Keshav, a silent and stylish man who speaks volumes with his eyes, Vishwas Kinni who makes Bhandari both unmistakably loutish yet vaguely charming, Sumeet Vyas as the groom who used to think only his mother was crazy, and Ekavali Khanna as a stepmother with an alarmingly loud cackle. ... full review
Thumbs up, by Rachit Gupta, Times of India : ...In that respect, ‘Veere Di Wedding’ is a brave effort indeed. This film will find an appeal with the younger generations who can relate to the discussions and dilemmas of these veeres.... full review
So-So, by Rohit Bhatnagar, Deccan Chronicle : ...VDW is an easy, breezy, one-time watch. If you are a fan of happy and convenient endings, then this popcorn entertainment is your dose for the weekend. ... full review
So-So, by Chaya Unnikrishnan, DNA : ...It's being hailed as a female buddy flick and the girls are open about drinking, having flings and discussing sex, which by and large is taboo in our films, so it's brave in that sense. But it has nothing to do with women empowerment. Once you accept that and watch the film you are in for a crazy ride. Yes, there are loopholes in the story but then it never professed to be taken seriously. It's pitched as a comedy and one needn't always find logic in the fun. ... full review
So-So, Free Press Journal : ...On the whole VEERE DI WEDDING has a bold theme that defies stereotypes and delivers a shock value. At the box office, the multiplex audience and the youth [especially female] will patronize the film in a big way. So-So, by Manjusha Radhakrishnan, Gulf News : ...While this film isn’t going to make you any wiser in love or life, Veere Di Wedding will go down as an engaging film that doesn’t hurt the eye. ... full review
So-So, by Charu Thakur, india today : ...Not-a-chick-flick Veere Di Wedding is for all who are missing their veeres. ...
So-So, by Shubhra Gupta, indian express : ...Net net, Veere Di Wedding is a fun ride, which squeezes past its creaky tropes and partial squelchiness by some smart casting choices, and perky performances. And lines which connect. ‘Shaadi toh foundation hai jhagde ki’, says a character, and I found myself chuckling. As did many people around me. ... full review
So-So, by NILESH RAMCHANDANI, Kia Gia : ...On the whole, 'Veere Di Wedding' has a fluctuating graph of entertainment. At places, it makes you laugh but there are times where everything just drags the plot not feeding anything enjoyable. The performances are brilliant but what it lacked, was a good story. ... full review
So-So, by Umesh Punwani, koimoi : ...All said and done, Veere Di Wedding is entertaining but only in parts. Good looking people reveal their messed up life & it might find a connect but with a very limited range of audience. Kareena Kapoor Khan has looked like a million dollars! ... full review
So-So, by UDITA JHUNJHUNWALA, Live Mint : ...Everything about this film is deliberately put together, like the cushion covers co-ordinated with kaftans and teacups. If only, like Meera, who carries her girth with aplomb, all of Veere Di Wedding had been as natural and comfortable. ... full review
So-So, by Mayank Shekhar, MiD DAY : ...These women are from South Delhi. I grew up there. As did a lot of my women friends (roughly the same age as Kareena, I guess). Are these really desi versions of the NYC ladies, from Sex And The City? That's what the filmmakers wanted to make. And you always knew that. What you make of it then is up to you. Really can't be complaining ... full review
So-So, by Jaidev Hemmady, Movie Talkies : ...However, on the flip side, the film does has its share of clichés and may come across as ‘more on style and less on substance’ for few. Also, at times, the cussing seems more to create shock value than for anything else. Nevertheless, ‘Veere Di Wedding’ is an entertaining fare, that one would enjoy with his/her gang of pals.... full review
So-So, by Kunal Guha, Mumbai Mirror : ...While this one works as a breezy film on girl bonding, it gets a bit tedious while taking a stab at patriarchy. In fact, a message it hopes to convey on the societal pressures endured by women is lazily tucked into a dialogue. “Pehle shaadi karo, phir bachcha, phir bachcha hua toh doosre bachche ka pressure.” It almost seems like old whine in a new bottle. ... full review
So-So, by Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV : ...But if you are not looking for radical departures from norm and are happy watching a film that seeks to blur gender expectations without shaking the boat too much, Veere di Wedding could pass muster. Does it give you your money's worth? It does. Does it break new ground? Fat chance. ... full review
So-So, by Divya Pal, News18.com : ...At two hours and fifteen minutes, Veere Di Wedding is an engaging film which is let down by its flaws. It is a film that could have been so much more. ... full review
So-So, by Manisha Lakhe, Now Running.com : ...Of course Kareena Kapoor is delicious and an amazing actor. She holds this trope bazaar together. In the end, love wins and there's a wedding and more partying and more boozing... ... full review
So-So, by ANISH MOHANTY, Planet Bollywood : ...'Veere Di Wedding' should have conjured up more dramatic moments in the narrative but it is a fun and harmless film that definitely deserves a watch. ... full review
So-So, by Sukanya Verma, Rediff : ...Kareena's restraint around the wedding hysteria bubbling around her, Sonam's airheaded optimism, Swara's crackling profanity and comfort for innuendoes and Shikha's talent for naughty wit comes together to say it's not a big deal for women to talk and do as they please. ... full review
So-So, by Nandini Ramnath, Scroll.in : ...They nail the comedic tone that Veere Di Wedding tries too hard to deliver, unlike the other characters, whose individual efforts are eclipsed by the relentless goings-on. A sub-plot involving Kalindi’s gay uncle (Vivek Mushran) ends up being far more empowering than the achievements of the heroines, who remain slaves to their vanity kits and costume designers. Bold, yes; beautiful, but of course; brave, not quite.... full review
Thumbs down, by Baradwaj Rangan, Blogical Conclusion, The New Sunday Express : ...As plastic as it is, Veere Di Wedding does for heterosexual women what Dostana did for gay men. It makes it safe for bedroom topics to be discussed in the drawing room.... full review
Thumbs down, by T J Reddy, fullhyd.com : ...That being said, that one uncle in my hall who clearly never watched any of the aforementioned movies enjoyed the hell out of this one even though the silence from his wife's side was deafening. Make of that what you will. ... full review
Thumbs down, by Sweta Kaushal, Hindustan Times : ...In its own subtle way, Veere Di Wedding also tries to subvert the male dominant stereotype but these moments are so few and far between that you almost miss the point. It may be a buddy comedy but it is not among the best in the genre, not even top five. ... full review
Thumbs down, by Rajeev Masand, News18.com : ...But these are small pleasures in a two-hour film that frequently feels like a fashion spread sprung to life. I had faint memories of Veere Di Wedding just hours after watching the film because it’s largely contrived and forgettable. I’m going with a generous two out of five. It’s an opportunity missed. ... full review
Thumbs down, by Namrata Joshi, The Hindu : ...No wonder, at a time when the gender question is in such a serious churn and feminism debate at its sharpest, Veere’s light-hearted and giddy take would seem entirely out of depth.... full review
Thumbs down, by Batul Mukhtiar, Upper Stall : ...And no. A dead woman’s voice-over cannot create more drama than there actually is, or is not. So no, this isn’t a Khoobsurat. Can we get Fawad Khan back please?... full review
