It was really nice to watch a fantasy world created with consistent rules and some thought. Unfortunately, the world doesn't really hook. It didn't capture my interest as I found myself drifting out of its realm a little too often. Indeed, it was an effort to stay connected and invested in the characters and their well-being.

The characters are cardboard cutouts of generic Hindi film characters.

This is mostly because neither the story nor the telling takes itself very seriously. For instance, it ignores the fact that comedy is serious business. Attempts to make you laugh are way too casually and carelessly inserted. They don't flow within the context of the film and therefore end up making the film's pace uneven and its execution jagged.

The performances are all earnest and energetic—of the loud, monotonous kind. Ultimately, it makes the film annoying. Yes, despite Ayushmann Khurrana and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Everyone is yelling their lungs out with little effect.

I'd say it's not their fault, though. The material is as flimsy as it is forgettable. And it is a shame because Hindi cinema is truly lacking a well-made supernatural fantastical movie, let alone a world. One that can take advantage of the latest technologies with creativity that goes beyond whooshes of dust flying through the screen and apparitions appearing and going missing.

This film, though, isn't that. And the world needs a lot more work in terms of purpose and focus. The characters are cardboard cutouts of generic Hindi film characters. The situations more or less fall into a similar category.

Thamma falls squarely in the "something is better than nothing" category. Not nearly good enough.

Thumbs up, Bollywood Life : ...Thamma is a smart, intelligent, emotional charged, humorous, and ridiculously entertaining, something we have never seen before, an epic saga offering something to everyone. It’s a prefect family viewing. It offers exceptional performances, clever writing, special effects, music, a complete entertainment package.... full review

Thumbs up, DNA : ...Thamma is a bold and ambitious leap for Indian genre cinema and this ever-expanding Maddock horror universe and this one lands firmly on its feet... full review

Thumbs up, by Devesh Sharma, Filmfare : ...In conclusion, Thamma is a well-produced, competently acted, visually engaging addition to the Maddock horror-comedy universe. It entertains, amuses, and occasionally surprises, but also reveals a genre edging towards creative fatigue. Thamma proves the universe still has bite, even if the fangs aren’t quite as sharp as they used to be.... full review

Thumbs up, by Rishabh Suri, Hindustan Times : ...Overall, Thamma feels less like another franchise instalment and more like the moment the MHCU truly finds its rhythm. It blends humour, and heart with surprising confidence, leaving you curious about what’s next...and for once, that curiosity feels well-earned.... full review

Thumbs up, by Jaya Dwivedie, India TV : ...Thamma' is an interesting attempt at the horror-comedy genre, and if you're a fan of the universe and Ayushmann Khurrana. However, it doesn't quite live up to Maddock Films' previous hits like 'Stree' and 'Bhediya'. Despite many pros, 'Thamma's' length, script, and repetitive humour weigh it down. All in all, if you're a fan of the Maddock horror-verse, this film may be worth your while. But be prepared for average entertainment. IndiaTV gives the film 3 out of 5 stars.... full review

Thumbs up, by "Rajiv Vijayakar ", koimoi : ...The introduction of the franchise characters is half-baked (Abhishek Banerjee) and overstretched (Varun Dhawan), while the third one is a blink-and-miss effort.... full review

Thumbs up, MiD DAY : ...‘थामा’ एक फिल्म नहीं, बल्कि एक अनुभव है.

Thumbs up, Movie Talkies : ...So, this Diwali, make your celebrations a little more thrilling — enter the world of Thamma and let the madness unfold. It’s entertaining, chilling, and heartwarming all at once — a bloody good time at the movies!... full review

Thumbs up, by Dhaval Roy, Times of India : ...Thamma ends on a thrilling note, teasing the next chapter of the horror-comedy universe. With its engaging humour, strong performances, slick visuals, and inventive VFX, it’s a thoroughly entertaining watch—and one that keeps the Stree universe alive and kicking.... full review

So-So, by Pranati A S, Deccan Herald : ...As the innocent yet fierce Tadaka, Rashmika effortlessly outshines Ayushmann. She excels even in the action scenes. Her character arc had enough potential to carry the film, but the male lead gets to steer the narrative.... full review

So-So, by Satish Sundaresan, Free Press Journal : ...The film has been directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, the very man who enthralled the audience with his previous blockbusters Munjya and Kakuda. With Thamma in his basket, just as when one thought he would achieve a hat trick of horror series, he gets clean bowled! Even though he is an experienced hand in horror comedy, Thamma’s haywire script fails to bring the ‘hit director’ in him.... full review

So-So, by Baradwaj Rangan, galatta.com : ...The star cameo is fun, but Thamma suffers from having to be a part of a universe while also having to be its own movie. The result is anaemic.... full review

So-So, by Lekha Menon, Khaleej Times : ...Thamma has brisk pacing and it definitely entertains if that’s only what you are looking for. But the screenplay’s inconsistencies are hard to ignore. The narrative rises, dips, then flounders again, leaving the film uneven at best. For a horror, it’s never scary; for a comedy, it’s not funny enough. In the end, the film turns into a chaotic Twilight-meets-Lokah-meets-What we do in the Shadows-meets-Dracula hotchpotch. Not bad for Diwali but nothing to celebrate either.... full review

So-So, by Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV : ...Nawazuddin Siddiqui brings an exceptional level of flash and flair to bear upon the titular role. It is a brilliantly modulated performance even when it appears to border on the excessive. That, to a certain extent, is true of the film as a whole. It teeters on the edge at times but never topples over.... full review

So-So, by TITAS CHOWDHURY, News18.com : ...Thamma was capable of so much more. This is the first time that a mainstream Hindi film is exploring the myths surrounding vampires. Yes, there’s masala, loads of it. But MHCU’s earlier films had raised our expectations so high that by the end of Thamma, you’ll be left feeling high and dry.... full review

So-So, by Sakshi Salil Chavan, Outlook India : ...Journalism trumping corruption is a fantastic metaphor but Khurrana’s stale sheepishness, Mandanna’s restrained Hindi and a film competing with itself to recall as many Maddock references as it can, just…sucks. Nothing beats (a Jet 2 holiday) and the sour look on my face as I’m forced to witness multiple reenactments of the cringe “Dame Un Grr” Instagram trend in this film.... full review

So-So, by Deepa Gahlot, Rediff : ...Khurranna and Mandanna dutifully do their teeth-baring, and mooning over each other in the inter-species love story that depends a bit too much on familiarity with the earlier films for its laughs, and remains cheerfully tacky in its production design and visual effects.... full review

So-So, by Anuj Kumar, The Hindu : ...In an age when the direction of the thumb judges creative pursuits, Thamma is somewhere between thumbs up and thumbs down.... full review

Thumbs down, by Nitin Jain, Glamsham.com : ...Bottom line: Thamma wants to deepen the Maddock universe with myth and romance but ends up a patchwork of half-baked ideas. Flashy, noisy, and forgettable — a film that bites off more than it can chew.... full review

Thumbs down, by Vineeta Kumar, india today : ...Ayushmann's performance reminds you of his earlier years – sincere but a little unsure. It's not the confident ease of 'Bareilly Ki Barfi' or the conviction and intensity of 'Article 15'. Rashmika fares better than some of her recent outings, but she too can't rise above the patchy writing. Paresh Rawal and Faisal Malik do what they can, while Nawaz's overdone villainy becomes a distraction more than a threat.... full review

Thumbs down, by Shubhra Gupta, indian express : ...It’s the beat that Abhishek Bannerjee, who shows up for a walk-on part, gets bang on: his entry got the loudest laugh in my first day first show. Paresh Rawal’s as Goyal Sr adds to the heaviness, even though he gets a clever line: Ayushmann bhava, he tells his son, and we smile, as we are meant to, that momentary smartness getting us past the spate of ‘Vikaspuri ke wolverines’ and ‘Sarojini Nagar ke saste Draculas’.... full review

Thumbs down, by Nandini Ramnath, Scroll.in : ...The various elements clash rather than harmonise, unlike in the year’s superior vampire film Lokah Chapter One: Chandra. Unlike Lokah, which deftly meshed escapist entertainment with political commentary, Thamma is bite-free and bloodless.... full review

Thumbs down, by SAJIN SHRIJITH, The Week : ...Since the memory of Lokah: Chapter 1 - Chandra is still fresh in the minds of everyone who loved it, it would be difficult for films like Thamma to evade comparisons to the Kalyani Priyadarshan-starrer, which did a far better job with a similar concept. It had better heroes, anti-heroes, and villains. Even if one were to evaluate Thamma for its own merits, the flaws far outweigh the strengths. Lokah was a home-cooked meal; Thamma is processed food.... full review
