Stree 2

wogma rating: Watch if you have nothing better to do (?)

quick review:

“WHY SO LOUD?” Would’ve asked the question if I got a feeling that there’d be a well thought out reason for the decision or any film-making decision at all. That’s how haphazard it all is. (Streaming Partner: Amazon Prime)

“Continue the story” or “Pass the story”, you might have heard of this game. You can see how it plays out as a movie if you end up watching Stree 2. It’s a game in which one person starts a story and thereafter people take turns to continue the story with a line or two. A lot of fun, but a movie it makes not. And no, just in case you read that wrong, Stree 2 is the opposite of a lot of fun.

Anyway, let’s hope the next one goes back to Stree’s writers.

Ok, I lie. Along with the beginning in this game of “continue the story”, the writers had the end ready too. So, they had to reach that end somehow as they played along. Or, that’s how it felt. And that end is leading to another episode that promises an army of well-meaning monsters.

The disappointing bit is that this is such an exciting prospect! A Hindi film franchise of sorts with a universe that is haunted by spirits at war—some disgruntled, some helpful. The former holds real-world mere-humans hostage. What fun!

But, there has to be a better way of coming up with the plot and sub-plot. Better than the slapstick we see here; better than the chillum-chilli, the cacophony on display here; better than the misuse of ace-rate actors.

Yes, I doubt this is arguable—Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurana, and Abhishek Banerjee—all of them definitely deserve better character writing, and equally emphatically a better story. The glaringly missing name there of course is Shraddha Kapoor. Have we seen her in a role that challenges her beyond the average?

But that is a problem for later, right? This one has a lot of things to be fixed before we get to whether or not the lead lady can be a better actor. Other than the story and its writing, a huge one is in the song department too.

Even as I grudgingly accept the existence of an item number because it is “for the plot”, I acknowledge that the lyrics of that one are pretty creative. But then you have a commentary on consent with “khareedi nahi ja sakti haseen ki ijaazat”* alongside some generic line to the effect “how can anyone be so beautiful?” repeated ad nauseam.

The disappointing bit is that this is such an exciting prospect!

The latter is a post-climax song leading up to the next episode in the series. Actually no, it is a post-post climax song. And there is one more post-post-post climax scene. I know, right? You’d think there is a better way to segue into what’s coming up next than abruptly sewing together all the post and post-post stuff.

Anyway, let’s hope the next one goes back to Stree’s writers. What a fun surprise of a movie that was. I surely don’t remember that one having so many irrelevant scenes that are so long drawn out and slapstick to top it off. Maybe the very obvious social issues will be highlighted appropriately again too. Maybe it’s time to go watch that one again to wash this one out of memory.

Thumbs up, by "Pooja Darade ", Bollywood Life : ...Stree 2 is a thoroughly entertaining sequel that will leave you with a smile on your face. It’s a well-crafted film that not only entertains but also delivers a meaningful message, supported by stellar performances. Maddock Films has succeeded in creating another memorable horror-comedy, following the success of Munjya, and Stree 2 stands as a worthy sequel that hits all the right notes. Don’t miss the chance to experience this film in theatres.... full review

Thumbs up, by Abhimanyu Mathur, DNA : ...Stree 2 is a winner on most counts, the event film-summer blockbuster combination that Hindi cinema had been missing all this year. It asks you to leave your intellect at home and just come to the theatre for good old entertainment. In that, it succeeds. I just have one wish – that it could have been less loud. The constant banshee screaming from the demons does make you wish you carried ear buds to the hall.... full review

Thumbs up, by "Devesh Sharma ", Filmfare : ...In summary, Stree 2 is a commendable follow-up that effectively balances chills, thrills, and laughs. The stellar performances, particularly by Rajkummar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi, alongside the intriguing new antagonist, make it a worthy watch for fans of the genre.... full review

Thumbs up, by Murtuza Iqbal, Filmi Beat : ...The songs in the film are impressive. Aaj ki Raat and Aayi Nai are already chartbusters and even the romantic tracks leave a mark. Thumbs up, FirstPost : ...On the whole, Stree 2 is easily one of the most entertaining films of 2024 and a perfect Independence Day watch for cine lovers. Maddock Films and Jio Studios have definitely delivered a blockbuster of the year.... full review

Thumbs up, by Baradwaj Rangan, galatta.com : ...I wish the climax face-off had been more thrilling. But why complain that Stree 2 isn’t a better movie? It gives us exactly what we go in for, and these days, that seems like achievement enough. Plus, the four actors at the centre: as long as they sign on, I am game for any number of Stree-quels.... full review

Thumbs up, by Rishabh Suri, Hindustan Times : ...Some starry cameos are sprinkled and bring the house down. Tamannaah Bhatia steals the show the moment she enters the proceedings. What has worked in the favour of Stree 2 is the music, specially Aaj Ki Raat. Where the sequel lacks is the unimaginative cameo by Bhediya (played by Varun Dhawan) in Stree’s universe. I wish the connection was more elaborate.... full review

Thumbs up, by Tushar Joshi, india today : ...Stree 2 is funny, has some good scares, and is a step forward for the franchise. While Hollywood boasts of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), our made-in-India SCU (Stree Cinematic Universe) also has great potential.... full review

Thumbs up, by Aseem Sharma, India TV : ...Stree 2 is without a shadow of a doubt one of the finest films of 2024 with a perfect storyline, acting performances, and beautiful direction. The VFX in the film will also not disappoint you and the horror scenes are going to give you nightmares for sure. If you have watched the OG film, then there should not be any dilemma about whether to watch this one or not. Or if either horror or comedy is your favourite genre then also Stree 2 is highly recommended... full review

Thumbs up, by Lekha Menon, Khaleej Times : ...Despite these glitches, Stree 2 is one of the better comedies to have come out of Bollywood in a long time. The humour is clever and watching it in a packed theatre that is chuckling along with the antics of the leads make it a worthy trip to the cinemas. During bleak times such as these, trust a 'stree' to bring in some cheer!... full review

Thumbs up, by Rajiv Vijayakar, koimoi : ...Here’s wishing that the makers had put less tropes and more substance to chortle and shiver about rather than star cameos, post-climax, a post-post climax and so on, besides a stretched second half. But the film does not disappoint as a sequel, or as a member of the horror-comedy fraternity, and thus for value-for-money entertainment.... full review

Thumbs up, by Mayank Shekhar, MiD DAY : ...Stree 2 has been neatly/smartly scripted by Niren Bhatt, credited in the past, notably, for Serious Men (2020), Bala (2019), and Bhediya (2022), which is now part of Stree producer Dinesh Vijan’s funny-supernatural universe. Bhatt can happily place this pic on top of his CV.... full review

Thumbs up, by Sameer Ahire, Movie Talkies : ...Stree 2 will give jump scares with its background score, camera angles, and visual effects. This is how you create an atmospheric horror film. A textbook to every new film maker who wants to crack it, or else you have The Conjuring franchise too.... full review

Thumbs up, by "Dishya Sharma ", News18.com : ...Bottom Line: The film is entertaining, despite a confusing climax. Watch it for the laughs—it’s worth the ride.... full review

Thumbs up, NewsBytes : ...Stree 2 is one of the rare films that have the same magic ingredients that made the first part such a runaway blockbuster. It is not afraid to experiment, it can take a joke or two on itself, its performances never miss, and most importantly, its narrative core isn't hollow. Maddock's horror-comedy universe has truly come of age with Stree 2. Don't miss it.... full review

Thumbs up, by sukanya Verma, Rediff : ...Especially when a bunch of scared boys hide behind heaps of bangles while the girl whips the baddie with her all-powerful pigtail. Chanderi Puran is ready to add new chapters to the spectacle. 'Stree 3's kal aana' is as inevitable as the purush threatened by it.... full review

Thumbs up, by Nandini Ramnath, Scroll.in : ...Abhishek Banerjee, Pankaj Tripathi and Aparshakti Khurana supply the giggles as Chanderi’s unlikely Avengers, rushing headlong into situations they are ill-equipped to handle. Varun Dhawan has an electrifying cameo, while another movie star turns up in a less effective guest appearance that is mercifully short-lived – but hold the thought. This monsterverse is only just getting started.... full review

Thumbs up, by Simran Khan, Times Now : ...On the brighter side, the cameos (spoiler alert) work in favour of Stree 2. The movie is a full-fledged entertainer with the perfect dose of laughter and scares. It is everything we hoped for and a little bit more.... full review

Thumbs up, by Abhishek Srivastava, Times of India : ...The pacing feels rushed, and one wishes the writers had given more attention to this part of the film. Despite this, ‘Stree 2’ delivers plenty of entertainment, and Amar Kaushik once again excels in direction. The film retains the energy and charm of the original, with a clever script that brings a fresh twist.... full review

So-So, by Prathamesh Jadhav, Free Press Journal : ...All in all, 'Stree 2' is quirky, funny and entertaining at places, it lacks a concrete plot and precision. We wish the editing could have been as sharp and sleek as the flourish with which Sarkata decapitates!... full review

So-So, by Shubhra Gupta, indian express : ...The film also give us an all-too brief glimpse of the real monster, which is the power tyrannical men have to subjugate women, and when the red-sari clad women of Chanderi reclaim the night, it speaks to something that’s happening on our streets outside movie theatres.... full review

So-So, by Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV : ...Puerile and dragged out to snapping point, Stree 2 is not as much of a washout as it could have been because of the occasional flashes of bright comicality and straight-faced gullibility that shine through in the writing and the unwavering quality of the performances.... full review

So-So, by "Rishil Jogani ", Pinkvilla : ...There are definitely a lot of things to appreciate about Stree 2, but as a film, it seldom hits the right notes because of the hit and miss comedy and the forced attempt at building a movie universe.... full review

So-So, by Shilajit Mitra, The Hindu : ...As you already know, Stree 2 is part of an ongoing cinematic universe. The film ends with a post-credit sequence and then a post-post-credit sequence. An actor who utterly jars with this world is shooed-in. This is a desparate new fad that has enchanted Indian cinema.... full review

So-So, by Pratikshya Mishra, The Quint : ...As a result, the sequel simply isn’t as scary as the original which is a pity because switching the sex of the antagonist in the themes that Stree operates with should’ve had the opposite effect. Stree 2 is still immensely watchable and is a theatre viewing experience I have missed – go with friends, go with family.... full review
