Friend vs. fiancée – somewhere in the middle of their constant manipulations, you wonder how the tables are going to turn. But, that curiosity is almost always met with repetitive reaction shots and a lame twist.Read more
Possessive friend becomes manipulative because his friend’s fiancée is a schemer and manipulative. Why she is manipulative? Your guess is as good as mine. It ought to be enough for us that the possessive friend thinks so. The resultant back and forth between the friend and the fiancée are just about interesting. But they become repetitive and tiring.
the writing is just happy sticking to what it has built on in previous films.
To begin with the premise of characters manipulating their friends and significant others is not very engaging. It is not that I don’t know that manipulative people exist in the real world. I am sure they do. It’s just that, I don’t find their stories interesting. Once you figure that this character can go to any extent to get their way, they become predictable.
Of course, to the extent that you are already in the theater watching the film, and we don’t know what they are going to do next, you are interested in finding out. But that bit of curiosity is also dealt with ‘meh’ twists. It doesn’t help here that you can predict the film-making. At least 7-8 times in the second half, I caught myself thinking, “now, she is going to make that eye gesture that says she is unfazed and has a smart move up her sleeve” or “now, he is going to look at her from that mirror” or “don’t tell me they are going to look at each other with that smug smile as if no one else is watching” or “please-please-please don’t make her wink with a death-stare in slow-motion in the next scene”. And that is exactly what happened. To the word.
Predictability to the shot level makes the film have a Hindi TV serial like quality. Not to mention the petty, dining table politics. This and the thick woman-bashing attitude of Luv Ranjan’s film is getting tiring. I tried very hard to treat it as just a story between two friends and one’s significant other. But, the flavour seemed to be especially anti-woman. I even tried to give it the benefit of doubt, that maybe it was their style of satire. But, so deep is the regressive attitude that the filmmakers seem oblivious and ignorant of the stereotyping.
There was this one shot in a party song, one of the guys goes to this woman who he has presumably met for the first time. She is wearing glasses. He takes those glasses off and gestures that she is looking nice. There’s something inherently creepy about this. And this is our protagonist, who we are supposed to like?
At this point, I think I am putting more thought into the writing than the writers ever intended to. Because the characters are of course uni-dimensional. But, you see only one aspect of their single dimension too. Sonu (Kartik Aaryan) is annoyingly know-it-all. Titu (Sunny Singh Nijjar) is naive and dumb. We know this about Sonu and Titu only from one aspect of their lives – Sonu’s girlfriend, Sweety (Nushrat Bharucha). Sweety on the other hand, is interested in making sure Sonu doesn’t succeed in getting her out of Titu’s life.
Now, why she wants what she wants seems to be irrelevant. In that sense, the entire film seems to have no rhyme or reason. The very premise of the film is suspicion about Sweety’s intentions and we are pretty much asked to take that basis for suspicion for granted. For what the film purports, she would have to be playing a long, long game like a professional con artist.
please-please-please don’t make her wink with a death-stare in slow-motion in the next scene
In that sense, the writing is just happy sticking to what it has built on in previous films. Since no Luv Ranjan rom-com can come without a Kartik Aryan monologue and they don’t want it to become repetitive, he takes off right at the beginning but it’s not about women. So, much for creativity. It is amusing when the writer actually has Sonu admire the writing by repeating how smartly the previous scene was written. You know, just in case the audience didn’t notice. Only that it was not.
The actors do what we are used to seeing them do. Except for Alok Nath, who plays a quirky, adorable, and a not-so-sanskari grandfather. It was a joy to watch him so. But that doesn’t mean his track in the film belonged.
While focused on the ‘friend’ versus ‘girl’ competition, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety also has these extraneous tracks that unnecessarily lengthen the film. Considering the central track is run-down and annoying by the writer-director’s own standards, that leaves very little in the ‘watchable’ category.

Thumbs up, Bollywood Hungama : ...On the whole, SONU KE TITU KI SWEETY entertains as well as packs a solid punch. It is witty and sharp both in terms of drama and execution. At the box office, it will be lapped up by its target audience – the youth – who will take an instant liking towards the film. Strongly recommended. ... full review
Thumbs up, by Rohit Bhatnagar, Deccan Chronicle : ...It could be easily be called as the third instalment of Punchnama series, but bromance brewing in it makes it a good watch this weekend. And if you are expecting something extraordinary then you may give it a miss, but might regret later! ... full review
Thumbs up, by Manjusha Radhakrishnan, Gulf News : ...What’s interesting is that director Ranjan has done a splendid job of creating a believable extended family. The supporting actors are given as much attention and spunk as the main trio, which is rare in Hindi films. Titu’s quirky family is a riot. ... full review
Thumbs up, by Umesh Punwani, koimoi : ...This is not Pyaar Ka Punchnama but is as entertaining following a similar concept. One entertaining ride with superlative performances by the leading stars as well as supporting cast. Watch this go PURE 24K ENTERTAINMENT! ... full review
Thumbs up, by Mayank Shekhar, MiD DAY : ...The cast is absolutely up to the mark. The one who, in fact, stands out is Alok Nath as the cool, Black Label swigging, Punjabi grand-dad. For once, from what I hear, Nath is in a role closer to his actual self, rather than the Sanskari parts he's walked through most of his career. Kartik Aaryan plays the jilted-bro Sonu.... full review
Thumbs up, by Joginder Tuteja, Movie Talkies : ...The good part about Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety is that the pace of the film never slackens and there are around six-seven songs that fill in the narrative at just the right moments. Each of these songs has its definitive place in the film and is also picturised quite lavishly, something that you don't quite expect from a film with a relatively new starcast like this. ... full review
Thumbs up, by Manisha Lakhe, Now Running.com : ...There are many holes in the narrative, starting with Sweety's motives for being the way she is, and why Sonu believes women are always wrong, but it is offers us reason to watch out for a sequel. The film is as Punjabi as it gets (read alcohol and expletive soaked), and boy, do the characters have fun! ... full review
Thumbs up, by ANISH MOHANTY, Planet Bollywood : ...'Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety' will further strengthen the brand Luv Ranjan is today. Despite being overlong and an inconsistent second-half, the film makes for a very entertaining watch and will be definitely lapped up by the youth. ... full review
Thumbs up, Sify Movies : ...Nushrat Bharucha's deftly enacted Sweety admits at one point she is not the heroine but the villain. So does she get her hero or does she get her comeuppance? The answer my friend, is blowing in the wink. ... full review
Thumbs up, by Renuka Vyavahare, Times of India : ...Despite the odds, this bromance vs romance comedy works as an exciting guessing game to predict who’ll end up as the third wheel — best friend or girlfriend? This means war. ... full review
So-So, by Rajat Tripathi, Bollywood Life : ...It has plenty of laughs in the first half but suffers from the curse of the second half. If you swear by Luv Ranjan’s brand of comedy – Pyaar Ka Punchnama series – you will have a good time watching Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. Other than that don’t RSVP to this version of My Best Friend’s Wedding. ... full review
So-So, by Smita Vyas Kumar , Desi Martini : ...This movie is a strict one-time watch for the laughs. Do not look for too much logic in it but just go along with the goings-on and you will be entertained. ... full review
So-So, by Zinia Bandyopadhyay, Desi Martini : ...Coming to the performances, Sunny Singh was probably the weakest link in the film. Alok Math's non sanskari version was a sight to watch for. If you like comedies of the flavour of Pyaar Ka Punchnaama, you'll probably love the film. But misogyny is a total turn off, this one's not your film. ... full review
So-So, by Devesh Sharma, Filmfare : ...Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety could have done with tighter editing as the second half drags a bit. Cinematography and music are on par, though the songs are mostly rehashes of hit Punjabi numbers. The film has sharp, witty dialogue, and it's these which make you laugh the most... ... full review
So-So, by Johnson Thomas, Free Press Journal : ...Karthik Aryan is volubly acerbic and does a fab job as Sonu, Sunny Singh has got the naïve sacrificial lamb look down pat and Nushrat Bharucha is her regular assured self. The three actors and the sharply written screenplay (though not brave enough) make it an amusing enough battle of the sexes. ... full review
So-So, by Suhani Singh, india today : ...What makes SKTKS an engrossing watch is Aryan's dynamic performance and the character of Sonu itself. He is manipulative like Ranjan's female characters and complicated too, but Ranjan and Mody aren't keen to dig deep into the dynamic between Sonu and Titu and present undertones that'd challenge the narrative audiences are generally fed. After all "I don't take care of you? Am I not enough? What she gives I cannot?" are not lines that a man tells his male friend routinely. There is innuendo here that cannot be dismissed. That's a film we'd watch. ... full review
Thumbs down, by Anna MM Vertticad, annavetticadgoes2themovies : ...Commercial Hindi cinema sorely needs a homosexual romance, but not an unwitting one. The impression of a gaymance in Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety comes not from a well-meaning director’s deliberate intent. It is a product of poor acting and writing. ... full review
Thumbs down, by Deepa Gahlot, cinemaah : ...It is a shallow film about moronic characters, so it is happy to coast along on easy laughs, when Sonu and Sweety go to war. Actually, they are a perfect match. The film has some gags as funny as cliched mother-in-law jokes, but Ranjan’s only agenda is to diss women, and they will probably laugh the loudest just to show their Titu-like boyfriends that they are such good sports. The next film should be about Sonu (and other characters played by Kartik Aaryan in Ranjan’s films), being sent to the shrink. Kuchh to gadbad hai. ... full review
Thumbs down, by Sweta Kaushal, Hindustan Times : ...The one thing that worked for Pyaar Ka Punchnama films was the relatability, even if it was restricted to guys-only discussions. Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety doesn’t have that, nor is it funny. ... full review
Thumbs down, by Kunal Guha, Mumbai Mirror : ...But the content lacks the angst and frustration of a scorned lover. It’s an anti-love story for sure. But it doesn’t entirely put you off happy endings. ... full review
Thumbs down, News18.com : ...There are times when you actually want to root for Sonu and Titu but the glaring sexism comes in the way. Watch the video to find out if the film deserves a watch over your social conscience, or not. Also, how much the film is worth your ticket money. ... full review
Thumbs down, by Sukanya Verma, Rediff : ...Pedestrian wit works best around actors who don't just go with the flow, but shape it to suit their comical timing. That's the difference between performers and parrots. But the underwhelming leads of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety don't seem to know the difference at all.... full review
Thumbs down, by Nandini Ramnath, Scroll.in : ...The disposable soft-focus songs and foreign locations cannot gild the coarseness of Ranjan’s view of modern romance. Sonu’s cynicism about marriage and family values is a welcome antidote to the syrupiness of the conventional Bollywood romance, but it is telling, and typical, that the poison is administered by a woman.... full review
Thumbs down, by Namrata Joshi, The Hindu : ...It was in 2011 that Ranjan first came out with a “male perspective” on the man-woman relationship in a middle class, urban scenario inPyaar Ka Punchnama.
