Shubh Mangal Saavdhan - Preview

The super combination of Ayushman-Bhumi as lead and a Vicky Donor feel to the film makes me look forward to Shubh Mangal Saavdhan ever so eagerly.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha was such a delight! Ayushman Khurana and Bhumi Pednekar brought everyday characters alive.

And Vicky Donor made a traditionally inappropriate subject seem absolutely appropriate. In fact, the girl's father from Shubh Mangal Saavdhan reminded me of the quirky grandmother from Vicky Donor. Also, the kind of turmoil that the couple seems to be in, has a similar texture as that faced by the Vicky Donor couple - everything is going well, but...

Same goes for the music of all the three films. Having watched at least 2 movies a week, every week for the last 10 years. Very rarely do I feel this – this film looks extremely promising! Worry not, I have over a week to temper my expectations.

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan releases on 1 September, 2017.

Music Reviews:
Bollywood Life - "The music speaks for itself as it fits perfectly in this love track."

For a movie that has so many departments working well individually, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan is ultimately underwhelming. With Ayushman Khurana and Bhumi Pednekar at the helm of affairs, there is little doubt with the acting department even before the movie begins. In some sense, it is a given that the topic will be interesting given this cast for that's how they seem to pick their scripts. The reminiscence of the 70s style of narration – a story from a small snippet of a middle-class family is always endearing. That makes Shubh Mangal Saavdhan one of those times when the “how” is as good as the “what” and yet it doesn't work because they aren't in sync.

It is disheartening that the next time the topic and these behavioral observations are taken up in a film, they will seem like a repeat.

At first, the film might come across as a strong statement on feminism. While the film is that it is much, much more about gender roles, even more than it is about the taboo subject of erectile dysfunction. Gender roles and associated pressures of “being a man” and “lady-like” are even directly addressed without spoon-feeding or preaching.

There are other endearing behavioral observations. Such as, the woman wanting excitement before the wedding, especially in an arranged marriage. Despite being rather common in real life, this theme has been only fleetingly touched upon in movies off and on. Here it gets some space to bloom. Unfortunately, it doesn't feel wholesome.

Another huge part of the film is the exaggerated involvement of the family. The satire is amusing for a bit but the hyperbole gets tiring in a bit. I am always in awe when the writers go over-the-top but the actors don't. While Brijendra Kala seems repetitive. Seema Pahwa makes me want me to see more and more of her, with every film, even if it is similar kind of roles.

Similarly, Pednekar is getting slightly repetitive while Ayushmann Khurana brings more nuance with every film. Some of this might have to do with how the film is written and the characters these two play. The interactions between the lead pair seem out of sync. Before any chemistry is established they are shown alternating between being loving to and upset with each other. Their interaction seems random.

Fortunately it can be enjoyed one scene at a time. The brilliant actors that they are, they manage to create a few moments too. There is one scene that will stick with me for a long, long time. In one short situation which is very awkward for both characters, you see how much respect they have for each other and how much they are willing to do for the other too.

Bhumi Pednekar might be falling into a bracket – of a middle class woman who speaks her mind, while stays kind and caring. You could say the same thing about Ayushman Khurana, but I am happy with the small variety he brings within the romance genre. From the totally confident man in Nautanki Saala who draws the woman he loves close to him to this diffident, hesitant, gentle man.

While the film is that it is much, much more about gender roles, even more than it is about the taboo subject of erectile dysfunction.

It is disheartening that these moments aren't spread through the film's writing. It is disheartening that the writing feels disjointed as if it was written over years and the writers lost objectivity. It is disheartening that the next time the topic and these behavioral observations are taken up in a film, they will seem like a repeat. In some sense, we have lost the “freshness” of this topic within a romantic relationship to “done before” in a sub-optimal way.

Thumbs up, by Baradwaj Rangan, Blogical Conclusion, The New Sunday Express : ...It’s funny and touching at once, one of the most beautiful depictions of compromise in our cinema. Shubh Mangal Saavdhan is yet another “small” film that shows where so many of our bigger movies go wrong. It’s not rocket science. It’s just the basics. With an alert cast, flavourful writing, good filmmaking, it’s not… hard..... full review

Thumbs up, Bollywood Hungama : ...On the whole, SHUBH MANGAL SAAVDHAN is a light hearted flick that can be seen by the whole family despite its taboo subject. Thumbs up, by Zinia Bandyopadhyay, Desi Martini : ...Had there not been the over dramatic scene, this film could have been one of the most perfect film of the year. Thumbs up, by Rachit Gupta, Filmfare : ...The music of Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, created by Tanishk Bagchi with contributions from Vayu is the masterstroke. Not only are the lyrics sensible and relevant, they actually play a part in the storytelling process. Minus the melodies and the zany lyrics, this film would've been a flaccid affair. Director RS Prasanna has handled the same subject in Kalyana Samayal Sadham, the 2013 Tamil hit, that's inspired Shubh Mangal. ... full review

Thumbs up, by Suhani Singh, india today : ...With Dum Laga Ke Haisha behind them there is a genuine comfort in their scenes of intimacy and repartee. But the biggest success of Prasanna's film is that it takes a topic off limits for many and makes it engaging for all.... full review

Thumbs up, by Ananya Bhattacharyal, india today : ...This is easily one of the best films that Bollywood has given us in 2017, a year that has been notoriously dry as far as good cinema is concerned. Shubh Mangal Saavdhan does not fall flat. It flies.... full review

Thumbs up, Indicine : ...Conclusion: Shubh Mangal Saavdhan could have been a cult film, it settles with being a very good film. An opportunity lost? Perhaps. But it does so much right. It starts a conversation about such a prickly topic, it fights for equality and women empowerment, and it does all this through a lighthearted treatment of the whole story. It may still be too early for normal middle class Indians to watch this movie with their family members but it does need to be seen by a lot of people to break their conventions about manhood and masculinity. Go watch it! ... full review

Thumbs up, by Umesh Punwani, koimoi : ...Do not at all confuse this film as a sex comedy, IT IS NOT! This film is binded along with making you LOL, will make you think. It tackles a subject which everyone has heard of but very few talk about. Go and see how Bollywood is progressing, go and watch how this is 2017 and we’re ready to watch anything we want. ... full review

Thumbs up, by Mayank Shekhar, MiD DAY : ...This film subtly, beautifully delves on this very idea of machismo, employing first-rate humour to discuss male sexual issues that otherwise remain so hidden under the carpet that the only way to address them is through babas and quacks, who put up secret bills and graffiti with their phone numbers across every Indian town. ... full review

Thumbs up, by Pankhurie Mulasi, Movie Talkies : ...The songs are melodious and the background score helps build the narrative. This is the most entertaining film of 2017 and is a must watch this weekend.... full review

Thumbs up, by Kunal Guha, Mumbai Mirror : ...The film perseveres to ensure it doesn't make light of the dysfunction in question, and chooses instead to parody the mayhem triggered by it. This is because aside from all the gags about performance pressure, ED happens to be a serious, rarely spoken of, debilitating condition that has altered marriages. But then, as they say, no hard feelings. ... full review

Thumbs up, by Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV : ...Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, breezy enough at its core not to be bogged down by the weight of its daring and untested pivotal plot point, is never less than entertaining. ... full review

Thumbs up, by Sukanya Verma, Rediff : ...With its fine zingers and feisty acknowledgement, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan does more for sex, both noun and verb, than any Hindi film can claim to in a long, long time. ... full review

Thumbs up, by Neil Soans, Times of India : ...It's quite the disappointment, and while that doesn't negate the undeniable effort put in by the cast, it makes you wonder why the narrative suddenly went limp. That aside, 'Shubh Mangal Saavdhan' keeps you entertained long enough to make it worth a watch. ... full review

So-So, by Anna MM Vertticad, annavetticadgoes2themovies : ...Shubh Mangal Saavdhan then is super-fun till it gets superficial. It is, to borrow the tagline of another film now in theatres, sundar, susheel and risky in its first half, flails about in the second, but remains entertaining overall. Handle it with care and alertness. ... full review

So-So, by Sreeju Sudhakaran, Bollywood Life : ...Shubh Mangal Saavdhan could have been the best romantic comedy Bollywood has seen in years. It tackles a risky premise, the humour was brilliant and the performances were first-rate. Unfortunately, the writing suffers a ‘gent’s problem’ towards the end, leaving us high and dry. Still, I would recommend you to watch SMS purely for the humour and Ayushmann-Bhumi’s amazing chemistry. ... full review

So-So, by Raghav Jaitly, Zee News : ...In the end, I would just like to say that 'Shubh Mangal Saavdhan' is an intelligent amalgamation of a good script and decent acting. It will make you laugh, it will make you think and it will also show a mirror to the 'modern' society. You will definitely go home wearing a smile. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Johnson Thomas, Free Press Journal : ...The writers come up with unconvincing twists to keep the aggravated twosome together. A surprise cameo doesn’t do much to extend believability either. Ayushmann Khurrana’s effortlessly performance is worth appreciating but Bhumi Pednekar’s hardworking one borders on irritating. This is a well-meaning film no doubt but who is going to sit through its floppy incipient shenanigans? ... full review

Thumbs down, by Sweta Kaushal, Hindustan Times : ...Prasanna presents Shubh Mangal Saavdhan in a rather flat manner and refuses to give space to characters other than the hero and heroine, leaving behind one mess of what could have been a fun-filled entertainer. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Manisha Lakhe, Now Running.com : ...The best ensemble cast too ends up just watching a really bizarre physical stunt, a pointless cameo from a sweet Jimmy Shergill, and a daft ending that makes no sense at all. Did I enjoy the film? Yes.
Do I recommend it? Yes, with a rider.
Is it a masterpiece? Not at all. An out and out entertainer.
Does it generate awareness on erectile dysfunction? None whatsoever. No attempt is made to explain the medical causes, symptoms, modern medical solutions, the irrationality of the stigma attached it.
What is the purpose of the film? Have an out and out sexual adult comedy film that can be enjoyed with friends or (in not so old) couples.
What is the rider that I talked about? This is a full on adults comedy, have no two doubts on that. If you watch the trailer then you know what to expect throughout the 105 odd minutes. There is no respite from the innuendos. They are not vulgar or obscene. Nice, kind of 1980s Shaukeen type. Really enjoyable, but most likely a very embarrassing watch with parents/children/siblings for a majority of film goers.

As a film, not a great piece. I can cite several defects. But given the fact that the intentions of the producer are clearly to entertain and not to educate, I can accept those faults under the guise of entertainment.

The film's setting is clearly north Indian village/town/city. Ayushyaman is yet again very good as an actor. But this North Indian Hindi is now starting to get too much. There are just too many Hindi films with that Hindi Punjabi setting, I am just missing the good Bombaiya Hindi. Bhumi excels yet again. She is once again believable as the girl next door. All the other character artists are superb in their caricatured roles. Coming to annoying aspects other than the non Bombaiya Hindi is the umpteenth time this year that a Hindi film insensitively makes fun of certain Hindu rituals by exaggerating the act of marrying off a human to a non human to tide off some calamity. Enough of it guys, don't make fun of what you have not even bothered to understand the origin.

Finally, several critics and reviewers are giving brownie points to the film for increasing awareness on erectile dysfunction problem that plagues the society. I have already written above on this topic. But I would also like to clarify that less than 2% of men in the 20s suffer from this. Sad as it is, there are far too many other serious issues that affect more than 2% of a set of people, so there is no nobility in making a film on this subject. Especially as there is no intention to educate. The one and only noble purpose is to give unadulterated adults comedy film. And for that very high marks to the film on my behalf. Keep it up (no pun), heartily recommend watching this with peer groups or in couples.

@Meeta: I read your review a few seconds ago. I had written my above post before reading your review, my way of trying to get the least influenced by the vocabulary used or the examples cited or subconsciously picking up the style.

I noticed the similarity in my opening style and in the style of your quick review. My apologies for the similarities, I can assure you it is sheer coincidence. I had no idea of this similarity until after I had posted my above comment. You might be tempted to say that great minds think alike, but I cannot claim to have a great mind :-).

@Fan ha ha ha ... no worries! No great mind at this end either :D
