Satyaprem Ki Katha

wogma rating: Watch but no rush (?)

quick review:

Its heart’s in the right place, but what’s the point if it’s left for too late into the film. Until then, we tolerate the usual hammy act in a sluggish film with loud caricatures.

The title is quite off-putting as if Katha (Kiara Advani) is owned by Satyaprem (Kartik Aaryan). Uggh. That is why it took a little while for the ‘woman empowerment’ theme to grow on me. Of course, it is done rather shabbily. In fact, so shabbily that for a bit I was confused. Are they showing a flip case of ‘if women behaved like men’ to empower women or are they being sarcastic, given it is starring Kartik Aaryan? Even if it is the former, it didn’t work at all because of how loud and hyperbolic it is.

For a change, I didn’t mind it being unreal, ridiculously so, at times.

And if it was the latter, yes. Scars from Pyar Ka Punchanama don’t heal easily. In fact, every time the camera threatened to pan into Kartik Aaryan’s face in ‘that’ way my body began to cringe. Thankfully, it remains only a threat, as if the makers were teasing us. That doesn’t mean Kartik Aaryan hams any less. He does his whole cute puppy, best-human-being-in-the-world thing. Exasperating!

Kiara Advani balances it off a bit with her muted character. But it takes a village to recover from Aaryan’s do. And Satyaprem ki Katha has a full village of loud performers for Kiara Advani to cover, even if she has some support from Gajraj Rao.

The movie gets to what it really wants to do and say only in the last hour or so. And the intent is pretty valuable. Alas, it comes an hour and a half after boring you out of your wits.

Consent, modernity, and honesty are put forth in a refreshing manner. In fact, the truthfulness part of Satyaprem Ki Katha is as unexpected as it is unreal. For a change, I didn’t mind it being unreal, ridiculously so, at times. I somewhat agree with Katha when she says she wished the world had more Satyaprems. Yes, even if it borderlines on being crass more often than not. It deals a different and mature hand to relationships too.

Unfortunately, it just doesn’t connect. It feels like the actors are making the right expressions and modulations but they aren’t touching a chord.

Certainly not enough to make the film something I would recommend. Instead, I wish they give it another shot after going back to the writing board.

Thumbs up, by Subhash K Jha, Bolly Spice : ...This film is a new beginning for both Kiara and Kartik. They shine in the emotional scenes, maybe a little more than expected, as the supporting cast is woefully sketchy. If only Widhwans had stuck to the central story of a vagrant who finds an anchor in his commitment to that thing called love.... full review

Thumbs up, by Smrity Sharma, Bollywood Life : ...Satyaprem Ki Katha is an unexpected and thought-provoking love story that surpasses expectations. While it comes with flaws, Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani's earnest performances shine through. Director Sameer Vidwans does a great job at successfully bringing to us an unconventional family dynamic. Overall, it is a heartfelt movie that delivers a strong social message.... full review

Thumbs up, by Abhimannyu Mathur, DNA : ...Yet, Satyaprem Ki Katha falters. The first half, the build up to the real story, drags. You don’t feel that afection for Sattu as you should, not for long. You don’t sympathise with Katha when she acts aloof or annoyed. A tighter script could have fleshed out these characters and their motivations better. But the actors do their part and try to make these characters likable. The problem lies in how the overall package never appears completely cohesive.... full review

Thumbs up, by Aakash Kumar, Filmi Beat : ...Kartik Aaryan looks endearing as Sattu while Kiara looks gorgeous as Katha throughout the film. For me, both of them have delivered one of their best performances in Satyaprem Ki Katha. While the duo shared absolutely thandi chemistry in their last outing Bhool Bhulaiyya 2, Kartik and Kiara look stunning together in this film. Thumbs up, by Ganesh Aaglave, FirstPost : ...Starting on a light-hearted slice-of-life note, Satyaprem Ki Katha takes a serious turn to give an important social message. But in the end, it leaves you with a smile on your face.... full review

Thumbs up, by Himesh Mankad, Pinkvilla : ...Satyaprem Ki Katha is a love story with the heart at its right place. It’s Endearing, Emotional, and Entertaining with strong performances by the two leads – Kartik and Kiara. Slight trimming was needed but eventually, you leave the cinema halls with a smile on your face appreciating the maturity that Sameer Vidwans has treated the subject with. It’s a Prem Katha that deserves all the Prem!... full review

Thumbs up, by ANISH MOHANTY, Planet Bollywood : ...Director Sameer Vidwans and writer Karan Shrikant Sharma do a fine job of conveying an important message to the audience through a film which has been nicely packaged as a commercial entertainer. One of the better Hindi films to have arrived this year, ‘Satyaprem Ki Katha’ should appeal to a wide segment of the audience.... full review

So-So, by Devesh Sharma, Filmfare : ...All in all, SatyaPrem Ki Katha is a love story with a difference, thanks to the cause it espouses. No means no. Watch the film for its powerful message and for the chemistry between Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani.... full review

So-So, by Rohit Bhatnagar, Free Press Journal : ...The music might pick up during the upcoming Garba celebrations, but Satyaprem Ki Katha gives a solid feel of a Gujarati daily soap. Sadly, you won’t even get to see the Gujarati delicacies especially when the characters are eating or even mentioning them throughout. The film is an overdose of dramatic events in a lower middle-class society set against the backdrop of Gujarati culture.... full review

So-So, by Monika Rawal Kukreja, Hindustan Times : ...As Satyaprem Ki Katha ticks most of the boxes in the checklist, it could very well be the much-needed love story that Bollywood needed at this point. Watch it with your family and partners for there's a message for everyone and no, it won't bore you even for a bit.... full review

So-So, by Umesh Punwani, koimoi : ...All said and done, this is not your routine rom-com-drama, it has to say something apart from how madly the guy and girl are in love with each other. Though it overstayed its welcome, I’m glad it was at least here.... full review

So-So, by Sonil Dedhia, News18.com : ...By the time the end credits begin to roll, you feel like you’ve been in that hall for what seems like an eternity. SatyaPrem Ki Katha is too long for a story that’s too familiar to begin with. It’s not a bad film, but it’s often dull and you can pretty much predict every next step.... full review

So-So, by Divya Raje Bhonsale, NewsBytes : ...Sameer Vidwans's Satyaprem Ki Katha is an honest effort that talks about a serious issue but gets bogged down by a sloppy screenplay. The comic parts, including Aaryan's famous Pyaar Ka Punchnama monologue (Can makers please stop adding that to every film?), don't save the boat.... full review

So-So, by Sukanya Verma, Rediff : ...Kartik sparkles in certain moments of vulnerability, but Kiara Advani is the reason why Satyaprem Ki Katha's simplified, sugar-coated look into serious issues like consent doesn't hit problematic notes.... full review

So-So, by Nandini Ramnath, Scroll.in : ...Advani’s sensitive, soulful Katha delivers her dialogue a few notches lower than her co-star, is effective in the serious moments, and affecting when she finally reveals her secret. Reuniting with Aaryan after Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Advani displays further evidence of her growing confidence as well as her ability to quietly keep some of the thunder for herself.... full review

So-So, The Guardian : ...Before you can get too depressed by it all, though, the cast are signing, dancing and batting their lashes at one another, and everything feels all right again.... full review

So-So, by Anuj Kumar, The Hindu : ...One of Satyaprem's most endearing qualities is that he blurts out whatever's on his mind, because… why be afraid to tell the truth! There is, at first, a rebuttal of this thought – that some truths cannot be told so easily. But by keeping everything inside, your life becomes a lie. When Katha reveals her trauma, she begins to smile. That's this film's most beautiful image. That's why the title works both ways. Satyaprem makes Katha his – so she becomes "Satyaprem Ki Katha". But more importantly, the truth sets her free. Put differently, the film is about the love for truth: "Satyaprem Ki Katha".... full review

So-So, by Pratikshya Mishra, The Quint : ...Satyaprem Ki Katha’s biggest issue is that it loses its decent messaging under the loudness of the hero’s journey. In creating a “hero” out of its protagonist, it forgets who the actual survivor is. More than once, Satyaprem claims he will be a side-hero to Katha’s journey but that doesn’t materialise in the film itself.... full review

So-So, by As Satyaprem Ki Katha ticks most of the boxes in t, The Week : ...The film could have elevated its plot by avoiding the dramatisation, simplification and Bollywoodification of a sensitive topic. Perhaps its National Award-winning director Sameer Vidwans (whose Anandi Gopal won a National Award for best feature film on social issues) wanted to highlight another important issue of the high number of unreported rape cases in India.... full review

So-So, by Sumit Rajguru, Times Now : ...Overall satya prem ki Katha is an overage love story with powerful performances from its lead pair, Kartik and Kiara Advani if you are a fan of Kartik and Kiara, this will be treat for you. Otherwise the film doesn’t have anything new to offer.... full review

So-So, by Ronak Kotecha, Times of India : ...Satyprem Ki Katha is driven by its need to preach and give a message. The subject does move you and leaves you with much to think about, however, it tends to take the more emotional route than an entertaining one.... full review

Thumbs down, by Deepanjana Pal, Film Companion : ...By the end of Satyaprem ki Katha, the film feels more like an exercise in virtue-signalling. And less like a labour of love.... full review

Thumbs down, by Zinia Bandyopadhyay, india today : ...The dialogues are quite cringe-worthy at several points. For instance, when the relationship is being compared to chai but takes a turn when Gajraj says, “Par gas pe chadhana to hoga”, implying relationships need some heat. And if the constant ‘ma-behen’ doesn’t test your patience, ‘maine suhagraat papa k saath manaya’ definitely will.... full review

Thumbs down, by JOYEETA MITRA SUVARNA, India TV : ...What to like about the movie Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani's onscreen chemistry.A strong and interesting second halfGajraj Rao is Effortless Supriya Pathak's vital dialogues and Gujju Ben's character is endearing.Strong punches and one-liners.Kartik's monologue, Kiara's boyfriend's beating scene would definitely clap. What was not impressive The screenplay is loose and stretched The important twist of the film comes in the second half which does not get much time to explore. None of the songs stand out except Gujju Patakha and Naseeb Se. Pasoori is not new to the people.... full review

Thumbs down, by Sameer Ahire, Movie Talkies : ...Overall, SPKK is a wannabe social and good film trapped in a messy screenplay. I wish they had been aware of their own motives. Feminism, manhood, sexual trauma, social taboos, romance, comedy, and family drama—it was just too much for one film with no senior face.... full review

Thumbs down, by Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV : ...So, Satyaprem Ki Katha educates while it entertains, but many of the creative choices that the script by Karan Shrikant Sharma makes and the directorial sleights that Vidwans resorts to lead to avoidably mawkish convolutions that the film is unable to snap out of, especially in the second half.... full review
