quick review:

The usual intrigue is maintained in the story, but so are the performances, style and tone – making it a repetitive film in many ways.

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3 - Preview

The Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster series is one of the few series in which I liked the second episode better than the first. Anyway, it is difficult to suppress the anticipation that Tigmanshu Dhulia’s films bring.

However, I have to admit that even though the trailer piques interest, there is a high chance that the film will seem repetitive when put together with the first two episodes of the series. The performances too seem repetitive, but that also means they are likely to be good ones.

Looks like this one can go either way despite the curiosity, as is typical of a sequel anyway.

For those of us following the series, we are quite familiar with the setting and the characters’ devious ways. In that sense, Saheb, Biwi aur Gangster 3 repeats itself. The intriguing set up and some ace lines though, keep the film going despite its predictability.

none of these complexities keep you from knowing how it is all going to end

In fact, as a rarity in Hindi films, we know the characters well enough even if we cannot recall their inter-relationships. Thankfully, again a rarity, the director/writers let the audience figure out who’s who and do not resort to voice-overs even once! For that novelty alone, the film deserves a few points.

Other than that, the build-up, the connect-the-dots and the many intertwining relationships amongst the large number of lead players all work in keeping you interested in the film. However, none of these complexities keep you from knowing how it is all going to end.

Similarly and unfortunately, the performances are repetitive too. You know Jimmy Sheirgill as a egoistic maharajah is going to have the given body language and you know Mahie Gill will try her best to convince us of whatever she is telling the other character only to make us ever more suspicious of her behaviour. And you know Sanjay Dutt is going to attempt swaggering his way through the film. Only Sheirgill manages to hold our attention despite the repetition. In fact, I was taken aback by Dutt’s slur and am unconvinced that it has anything to do with his character being drunk through the film. The large supporting cast does well to keep things together.

And even so, the film could make for a good, one-time, at-home, TV watch. Now, this could be because of lack of good thrillers or because of the things that are done well in the film.

Thumbs up, by Ronak Kotecha, Times of India : ...Overall, with a screenplay that surprises and performances to match, SBG3 successfully takes the legacy forward with minor bumps on the way. ... full review

So-So, by Baradwaj Rangan, Blogical Conclusion, The New Sunday Express : ...I walked away wondering if this trilogy wouldn’t be better off compacted as a 10-episode Season 1 on Netflix. That would take the pressure off from having to be standalone movies. Plus, there’s a knockout of a cliff-hanger.... full review

So-So, by Urmimala Banerjee, Bollywood Life : ...If you love dark humour, the film is a decent one time watch. Mahie and Jimmy are a joy to watch onscreen. However, do not expect a very taut and edgy thrilling story. ... full review

So-So, by Devansh Sharma, Filmfare : ...All in all, Dhulia has made an entertaining film which thrives because of the efforts of its main cast. It's an earthy saga, where the boundaries between good and evil are almost nonexistent and hence might not prove to be everyone's cup of tea... ... full review

So-So, by Johnson Thomas, Free Press Journal : ...Dhulia may have allowed the writing to go haywire, but his integrity towards look and presentation is certainly appreciable. The camerawork, setting, colour cadence, lighting shifts, sound and production design are consistently top-notch. ... full review

So-So, by Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV : ...Frittering it away on a flimsy Russian roulette-style effort isn't a good idea. So when the team decides to come up with another follow-up - the final moments of this film suggest that the fourth may not be far away - it will have to go all guns blazing. Or not at all.... full review

So-So, by Rajeev Masand, News18.com : ...It’s a shame then that Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3 never hits the higher notes of Dhulia’s earlier films. It’s a good reminder that a bigger budget and bigger scale don’t necessarily make for a better film. I... full review

So-So, Zee News : ...Overall, ‘Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3' keeps you engrossed in parts as in some places the film drags and makes for tedious viewing. ... full review

Thumbs down, Bollywood Hungama : ...On the whole, SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER 3 is a disappointing fare thanks to its long length, flawed script and haphazard direction. At the box office, these flaws and the lack of buzz will hamper its commercial prospects. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Deepa Gahlot, cinemaah : ...Out of the lot of bored actors, only Jimmy Shergill looks like he has some stake in the proceedings. Astonishingly, so besotted is Dhulia with his depraved former royals that he has ended the film with scope for a Part 4. Time to beg him to cease and desist! ... full review

Thumbs down, by Rohit Bhatnagar, Deccan Chronicle : ...SBG 3 is complex but not enjoyable. It is perhaps the weakest film of the franchise. Don’t seek a surprise factor because there is none. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Rahul Desai, Film Companion : ...If only this series had revolved around some deliciously convoluted method to eliminate real gangsters – imagine Saheb and Biwi’s mind games as a warped brand of social vigilantism. If a criminal can’t be rehabilitated, simply throw him into their clutches. But alas, this country will run out of figurative gangsters before an Indian couple acknowledges divorce as a solution. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Anna MM Vertticad, FirstPost : ...The first two Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster films were gratifying action-and-vengeance-packed rides. This one is just okay. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Rohit Vats, Hindustan Times : ...The royals of Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3 patronise obscure traditions and look more ancient than a ‘70s film. It offers nothing other than a niggling ache. It’s certainly a question mark on Tigmanshu’s otherwise satisfactory filmography. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Suhani Singh, india today : ...The Saheb Biwi aur Gangster movies have thrived on the combination of sex, power, lies and backstabbing but this time around Dhulia is low on ideas, humour and most importantly a compelling narrative. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Shubhra Gupta, indian express : ...The weakest link is Sanjay Dutt’s gangster, who feels grafted on to the landscape. He gets a whistle-worthy introduction, and an appropriately louche setting (a London nightclub with pole dancers and dark-eyed hoods), but his return to the UP homestead, and his ghagra-twirling mistress (Singh) is the beginning of the end of the film. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Umesh Punwani, koimoi : ...All said and done, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3 is a movie you should not watch under any circumstance. Even if you’re forced to watch under the gun point, death would be a comfortable option to choose. ... full review

Thumbs down, by UDITA JHUNJHUNWALA, Live Mint : ...The weakest of the trilogy, this story takes exceedingly long to set up the key players and their motivations. Dhulia does end part three neatly poised for a follow up. That might work too, as long as Gill and Sheirgill are at the epicentre and the gangster is not required to dance and sing romantic songs amidst sand dunes. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Shaheen Parkar, MiD DAY : ...Mahie Gill — another name synonymous with the thriller — returns to play the scheming malkin, and does a fine job at it. Considering that the film sees Chitrangada Singh and Soha Ali Khan return to the big screen after a hiatus, one would assume the film would give them scope to deliver. However, there's little for them to do here. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Jaidev Hemmady, Movie Talkies : ...In conclusion, the preceding two films in the franchise are much better than this latest offering…... full review

Thumbs down, by Kunal Guha, Mumbai Mirror : ...It’s difficult to imagine that this film has been helmed by Dhulia — the very same who directed the gripping account of the dacoit-turned-athlete Paan Singh Tomar or even the previous films in this franchise. Here, high ambition and low vision result in amplifying tracks that worked in the past, even if they come at the cost of a disjointed story.... full review

Thumbs down, by Manisha Lakhe, Now Running.com : ...This film had so much potential, but with Mahie Gill dropping her saree pallu all the time, you don't care for it at all.... full review

Thumbs down, by Sukanya Verma, Rediff : ...Out of place wit, flimsy motives, clumsily picturised songs, dispensable characters, phony instances of adultery and a parody of a climax ensure there is no hope for Dhulia's depthless, disappointing, drama. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Nandini Ramnath, Scroll.in : ...The movie snaps to attention when Aditya and Madhavi are around. United in their mutual hatred but equally soldered together by their contempt for the world outside their bubble, Aditya and Madhavi are perfectly paired. This match made in hell has its share of crackling repartee, inventive schemes for revenge, and moments of wanton behaviour. The scenes from a marriage in which sex is used as a leveller and relationships are purely instrumental considerably enliven the overstretched running time. Mahie Gill works hard to humanise the unlikable Madhavi, but the best moments and lines are reserved yet again for Jimmy Sheirgill. In this game of thrones, the feudal lord never loses his crown. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Kennith Rosario, The Hindu : ...The film has no memorable songs either and even fails to move you with a cover of the popular Lata Mangeshkar song, Lag Ja Gale. With a hint of another sequel, either Dhulia takes a hard look at the relevance of this franchise, or convinces Salman Khan for a ‘he is the bhai’ edition and mint money.... full review

Thumbs down, by Rummana, yahoo! India : ...‘Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3’, with an ‘A’ certification, seems more an exercise in titillation than an attempt at recounting a twisted tale about complex characters. The latest edition is no match for the intrigue and the craft that was at display when Dhulia directed the prequels. Without any FOMO, you can give this a wide berth. ... full review

Thumbs down, Zee News : ... ... full review
