It was a unique experience, watching Parmanu – The Story of Pokhran. I don’t think I have ever enjoyed a film for its basic content that had tacky production values, weird dramatisation, and workable if not awful performances. It is indeed because reality is stranger than fiction.
mediocre performances don’t come in the way of keeping you engaged
It is sheer madness – conceiving secret nuclear bomb testing while avoiding omnipresent US satellite surveillance. And they actually executed it! The methods described in the movie must just be a scratch on what actually happened. I assume the gaping holes in the story are owing to national security requirements. But the details they have in the movie are enough for you to sit up in awe, especially for someone like me who knew very little about the actual operation.
It is almost as if the makers knew exactly how gripping the basic story is – only that could explain the little effort put in the screenplay. It feels like it was written down based on a few interviews and then were added the layered frills of drama, patriotism, song, emotion, and so on. It is also almost as if the makers knew exactly how much faith they wanted to have in the audience. Nothing else can explain all the dramatization, over-written dialogue, the typical thriller elements such as pulsating count downs and expected twists, and oh the songs. In that sense, Parmanu does come across as a wasted opportunity.
The performances just about do. Fortunately, not much acting is called for in a thriller usually, so mediocre performances don’t come in the way of keeping you engaged. In fact, Boman Irani is caught doing one of his over-acting acts. Even so, Anuja Sathe stands out in one scene and it ends right about when she was going to give way to histrionics.
Interestingly, while watching that scene I became even more aware of how much they must have left out. Like Raazi, we would have easily dismissed Parmanu as a ludicrous figment of imagination and the situations as impossible, were it not a piece of real life.
It is indeed nice to see producers, directors, and actors take on subjects that are controversial and non-commercial. This bravery needs appreciation. Now, we need them to go the long haul and avoid commercial traps that make them add length through songs and redundant drama, just because. When the actual operation was so thrilling, the filmy drama is quite unnecessary.

Any thriller film needs great music to ramp up the tension, but ‘Parmanu’ fails in this department too, which is bound to be its undoing. If that was not all, the camera work is not slick enough, though the special effects used to show the movement of satellites and the climactic nuclear explosion, is above average. Excellent movie. It clarifies some of the questions I had in mind for last 20 year as to how such major vital project could escape the attention of NASA, ISI and Pentagon. Diversion of attention, at the end, towards Kashmir was a master stroke unknown to general public. Hope we get to see more of such films
A very nice film.
It is 20 years since India officially announced its capacity to detonate nuclear bombs, even though it seems like yesterday that the event occurred.
India is constantly monitored by USA, and all questionable movement of personnel or equipment is immediately questioned by USA. Whoever gave them the right only God can say. But then might is right, and if they complain then we have to bow to their pressures. How then did we accomplish an event on this giant scale all the time maintaining the required secrecy and also fooling the technology deployed by the giant?
Even though the main story and proceedings are most likely fictionalized, Parmanu makes for an interesting watch. The noble intention of the film makers to inform the audience stands out tall and clear. There are no hidden agenda like promoting the dead career of a terrorist or a handicapped Prime Minister. This one is pure genuine sincere effort.
Commercial considerations are clearly not the goal. There were so many (tempting) opportunities for product placement, especially for splashing logos of eminent TV channels during TV news - but the makers correctly stayed away from all such considerations. A simple film, made simply, with only the purpose of informing. Everyone should watch this film, if only to encourage film makers to produce more of this kind of sincere products.
And this makes an interesting nationalism case, without forcing the idea down our throats.

Recently having watched Parmanu, and watching another simple film Poorna (by Rahul Bose) - I wondered why cannot such nice simple film makers be encouraged instead of running madly behind the mediocre products of big banners?
Poorna (based on a real life achievement) was such a nice warm watch.
Simple in execution yet so heart touching. The characters, barring Rahule Bose, are all amateurs most likely - but still they made us feel their pain, their moments of happiness, their success. Rahul Bose himself is in top form, totally subdued and into the character he plays. Watching Poorna going through her life in a village in Telangana reminded me so much of Bhibhutibhushan's fiction Pather Panchali and the protagonist of Pather Panchali i.e. Durga.
Every frame is filled with love and care and goodwill. We need so much more of such films like Poorna or Parmanu - simple innocent straight from the heart story telling.
@Fan I liked Pokhran and haven't seen Poorna. But, I wouldn't call a film about nuclear tests innocent :)
