This “Good vs. Evil vs. Evil” film is horrifying, terrifying, disgusting and repulsive in turns. Ugh. Guess that is what makes it a decent horror-thriller?Read more
ugggh shudder crrreeps Horror films never reach my spine to give them a chill. They stay under my skin with that disgusting crawl. Yes, even a 2 minute trailer of a horror film has the potential to do that to me. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take much for a horror film to evoke that emotion from within for me. Fortunately though, Pari does seem like it is going to be a well-made film. This is despite the sense that it is unlikely to be any thing new in terms of a horror story.
However, since it is an Anushka Sharma production, it ought to have something up its sleeve. If nothing else, it does have her in a completely new avatar as an actor. Meanwhile, here’s hoping for my own sake that it is a short film. Well, at least there seem to be no songs.
Pari releases on 2 March, 2018.

When the objective of the film is to make your gut wrench and evoke nausea, and it achieves in doing both, you would have to call it a success, right? In that sense, Pari works. Of course, this has to be taken with a pinch of salt because I am easy-to-scare in horror films. But, why a movie has to be repulsive, even if for brief moments, to be terrify its audience, is beyond me.
One short moment in a morgue at the beginning of the film is enough for you to expect the worst through every moment of the film.
For a horror film to work, the first thing that needs to go right, is the acting. Anushka Sharma and Parambrata Chatterjee play the duality perfectly. She is vulnerable, he is protective. She is fragile and needy, he is the provider. She is violent, he is thoroughly confused. Rajat Kapoor is rather effective in playing both good and evil simultaneously. On the other hand, Ritabhari Chakraborty’s act comes across as affected.
Having largely crossed the first thing that goes wrong with a horror film, an Indian one at that, next comes the paraphernalia – the background music, the lighting, the camera angles, the prosthetics, the use of silence and so on. These too largely go well with the general sombre mood of the film. Sure, there are the usual tropes of horror films. There is constant nagging feeling that something is going to go wrong. You expect horrifying looking people and they appear, you expect disgust and it doesn’t disappoint (why?!). You know the character looking for something is going to turn around to find something they don’t expect or even if they expect it is going to be more horrifying than they and you expect. So, if you are a seasoned horror film person, a lot of this might disengage you. For the others amongst us, who are weaker at heart, it done well enough that we are counting the minutes to the end of the film.
That leaves the overall story and the details of how it plays out. Here the film is rather uneven. The build-up is brilliant, you know bits and pieces of the puzzle way into the second half. You are trying to piece it together when suddenly, in five minutes, the entire mystery is told. Ye, not shown, told. I guess you could thank the writers that they didn’t have one character narrate how smart they were, instead they had a character figure it out for himself. But, ultimately to you, it is told.
Then the film is misleading. The first half wants to make you believe that it is not the supernatural story you thought it was, but more of a character falling deeper and deeper into her mental illness. And suddenly it falls right into the supernatural realm. The saving grace is that it is different from your other supernatural films. There is a little more detail. Detail that equates period blood to poison, but nevertheless detail that the sect in question believes in.
What the film doesn’t tell you upfront though is that the makers are not going to hold back on the gore. One short moment in a morgue at the beginning of the film is enough for you to expect the worst through every moment of the film.
So, that is what I went through for the 135 minutes. Words of a friend who is equally, if not more, averse to horror films rang through, “why would we want to pay money and set the amygdala to fire up with fear voluntarily?” I claim to do it as a part of my job. What’s your excuse?

Thumbs up, by Tushar P. Joshi, Bollywood Life : ...If you love horror then Pari is a fitting tribute to the genre. I suggest sleeping with the lights on if you end up watching a late night show ! Yes, it’s that good. ... full review
Thumbs up, by Rohit Bhatnagar, Deccan Chronicle : ...It is advised that people with weak hearts should enter the theatre at their own risks. Pari is a delightful treat to those who are fond of horror flicks. And stop complaining that Bollywood doesn't produce good horror films! ... full review
Thumbs up, by FaHad AhMed, Desi Martini : ...Such a brilliant acting by Anushka Sharma, Movie gave pretty much scare, And is different from mainstream Bolllywood horror movies. A must watch for this weekend. ... full review
Thumbs up, by Zinia Bandyopadhyay, Desi Martini : ...Even though the film has a fair amount of scary moments and quite some gore, you won't go home feeling all scared. In fact, it ends in a feel-good way and this would scare you without making you unable to turn around at night. ... full review
Thumbs up, by Anna MM Vertticad, FirstPost : ...Greater clarity in Rukhsana’s back story would have helped, but for now, I am too busy trying to recover from that petrifying passage in Pari when I finally shut my eyes for a moment because I could take it no more. ... full review
Thumbs up, by Umesh Punwani, koimoi : ...Hollywood, please take out the notepad and write down the stuff from Pari on how to make a non-cliched horror film. Surely one of the best in this genre & a must watch for the fans. Producer Anushka Sharma needs a special mention to make this possible. ... full review
Thumbs up, by Renuka Vyavahare, Times of India : ...If you like horror as a genre, and prefer a genuine theme over sheer succession of scary sequences, you will like this one fascinating as it isn’t bound by the diktats of commercial cinema. ... full review
Thumbs up, Zee News : ...The real horror that this film explores is the exploitation of the weak by those who take on themselves the task of "protecting" the moral values of a decadent story. Rajat Kapoor as a one-eyed exorcist is chilling in his normalcy. ... full review
So-So, by Baradwaj Rangan, Blogical Conclusion, The New Sunday Express : ...All of which means that Pari fits squarely into what we’ve come to recognise as The Anushka Sharma Production. As an actress, this isn’t much of a stretch — she does what’s needed. (The plain-looking face, with freckles, is a nice touch.) But her real talent in these films seems to be in picking out interesting scripts, and directors (Roy is a first-timer) who really fit the material. These may not be Great Movies™, but they’re fresh, unpredictable and have a definite voice.... full review
So-So, Bollywood Hungama : ...Overall, PARI – NOT A FAIRYTALE has an interesting premise with a fair amount of chills and thrills. However, the weak screenplay and unnecessary blood and gore is off putting. At the box office, the film will appeal to the segment of audiences who enjoy the horror/gore genre of films. ... full review
So-So, by Suparn Sharma, Deccan Chronicle : ...Pari’s story, though rooted in patriarchy’s sadiyon purana fear of powerful women, doesn’t show the witches doing much evil stuff except, for the sake of their survival and love, bite a few pain in the necks... full review
So-So, by Devesh Sharma, Filmfare : ...A more dramatic story and tauter screenplay would have turned it into a true blue horror film. But in the present form, the only feeling it evokes is of sadness brought out by the fact that a brilliant opportunity got lost. ... full review
So-So, by Daphne Rose, fullhyd.com : ...Ultimately then, despite it being a strictly average horror film, we're giving Pari an extra star purely for sheer audacity in trying something new and for its technical finesse. Watch it for a distinct subcontinental/folklore-ish addition to the horror movie genre (and make sure you don't have impossibly high standards while at it). You're likely to enjoy it while it lasts. ... full review
So-So, by Manjusha Radhakrishnan, Gulf News : ...Kapoor as the determined exorcist isn’t an easy man to like, but that’s his victory in such a film. Watch this if you are in the mood for a gore-filled horror film. ... full review
So-So, by Shaheen Parkar, MiD DAY : ...But to give credit where it's due, Sharma has spent immensely on production and prosthetics, which, if gone wrong, can turn horror into comedies. As for the acting, Parambrata, best remembered for his 2012 outing Kahaani, alongside Vidya Balan, appeals yet again. Rajat Kapoor proves playing baddie can be good too. ... full review
So-So, by Nishevitha-Vijayanand, Movie Talkies : ...What is not adequate though is the kind of promise that Pari had made when it was announced and then later promoted through the screamers. It did boast of a good concept but then the execution doesn't really cover the distance.... full review
So-So, by Kunal Guha, Mumbai Mirror : ...Anushka Sharma with her steely gaze and blood-smeared face is determined in her sub-human character. It’s a brave choice and may not work for everyone. But then, the actress has often chosen to tell stories that most wouldn’t dare to. Parambrata Chatterjee as a virtuous Bengali boy is effective in conveying how his character responds to the troubling situations he is thrown in. In his Terry Pratchett avatar, made additionally menacing with a glass eye and the droopy eyelid, Rajat Kapoor conveys his character justifiably. Ritabhari Chakraborty as the deliberately coy and listless nurse is the weakest link here. But since her character barely has much bearing to the larger story, it can be ignored if not entirely avoided. ... full review
So-So, by Rajeev Masand, News18.com : ...And yet Pari doesn’t come together in a coherent, satisfying way. There’s a lot going on in the film, including references to true historical events from the subcontinent, and an over-dependence on old wives’ tales about spirits and ‘ifrits’ and ‘jinns’. What starts out interestingly, ends in a mess. ... full review
So-So, by Manisha Lakhe, Now Running.com : ...The hallmark of a good scary movie is that the scares come at you from all sides, fast and furious and do not allow you to breathe. This movie is slow to create the scary world, and even though you enjoy it, it takes too long to actually make you gasp for air. But what an awesome beginning for Anushka Sharma and Parambrata Chatterjee. ... full review
So-So, by Sreehari Nair, Rediff : ...Through Anushka Sharma's bloodied face, jabbing, and her dangling upside down, and Mansi Multani's turn as the witch-in-command, who holds all the strings, and who speaks for Ifrit -- 'Spread his bloodline,' says the senior witch -- I waited for the jolt to hit me, but it didn't. ... full review
So-So, by UDITA JHUNJHUNWALA, Sify Movies : ...Pari is technically competent, and Prosit Roy receives production support in plenty. The costumes, hair and make -up, and background music being noteworthy. The cast, which includes Ritabhari Chakraborty as Arnab’s fiancée, contribute with wholehearted performances. Anushka Sharma, in particular, immerses herself into a physically exhausting character. But an elaborate track about satanic worship along with themes of good versus evil and love limits this film’s appeal to the loyal viewer who favours this genre. ... full review
So-So, by Namrata Joshi, The Hindu : ...In an effort to find a neat closure (when he could have tried to make a Omen-like franchisee out of it), the director spins out a clumsy climax. Wish he had left a lot more unsaid and unresolved. ... full review
Thumbs down, by Rohit Vats, Hindustan Times : ...Pari appears puzzled as if they don’t know how to end what they started. Anushka Sharma’s film attempts to look different than usual ‘bhoot ki film’, but in the end, finishes right where 1920 Evil Returns or Alone did. ... full review
Thumbs down, by Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV : ...One thing that Pari isn't is predictable. But that isn't good enough. It just isn't the sort of spine-chiller that the pre-release "screamers" would have us believe. It lacks the narrative consistency that its in-your-face methods needed in order to be truly effective. In the end, the makers of Pari try way too hard. The outcome is an extended blur that leaves you dazed but totally unimpressed. ... full review
