Mukkabaaz

wogma rating: Watch but no rush (?)

quick review:

Relentless, intense, relentlessly intense are all the words that come to you during interval. After that though, the film loses steam slightly because it gets a touch repetitive.

Mukkabaaz - Preview

It is strange when you see the trailer of an Anurag Kashyap film and there isn’t a single witticism that is likely to stick with you. The lack of swear words seem out of place too. That and the regular tyrannical politician-goon versus underdog, story line doesn’t make you wait for the film with anticipation.

The only thing that kindles any interest is the name Anurag Kashyap as you find likeness of language with Gangs of Wasseypur. But, similarities seem to end there. Unless of course, likelihood of great performances is a similarity you can attach to a director. After all, we have seen Jimmy Sheirgill as an intimidating authority often enough.

The music kind-of shows its face as a reminder of the director’s films though I am not sure they will have as high a recall value. Walking in to the theater with balanced expectations doesn’t seem to be very difficult this once.

Mukkabaaz releases on 12 January, 2018.

Music Reviews:
Firstpost – "4/5"
Milliblog – a 200 wrder that ends with,"Anurag’s stellar musical run continues, this time with Rachita Arora!"
Music Aloud – "4/5"
indian express – "It has its moments but is by no means an essential item on the playlist."
Bombay Times – "beautiful bouquet that presents a veritable variety — contemporary songs, raga-based ones and also, folk tracks."

Casteism, feminism, bureaucracy, state of sports – Mukkabaaz takes on all these causes in its stride. It puts them with the story of a boxer who faced roadblocks from all directions – enough to get you riled up and thinking about all the wrongs in our society today. Yet, it let’s go of all the energy in the last hour by making the film a tad repetitive.

This story is being told because the story ought to be told and not because he wants to tell the story.

It is intense enough that you want a break from the aggressiveness of it all. However, the touch of humor and drama can be blamed for making that last hour feel like a bit of a stretch. Sure, some of the one-liners and situations make you laugh out loud and clap. And except for a couple of sequences where the background score pounds on till you realise that it is a dramatic moment, it adds value and pulses very well with the situations. But all of this takes your attention away from the story and disengages you a bit.

So it is a balancing act between enjoying those sarcy but fun moments where the writers take a jab at Hindi films or a social situation and the intense familial or boxing stories. Individually, neither of these are striking enough to make you expect the unexpected. But collectively, you are constantly waiting for the worst to happen.

The edge is sharper because every time you think the situation is exaggerated you remember this is inspired from a true life story. And if newspaper headlines are to go by, reality must be so much more worse. This after all was a much stronger couple facing the tyrannical uncle or the toxic boss. And they had support from other family members and coaches. What must meeker personalities with little or no support go through?

While you don’t completely feel the pain because of the treatment, this empathy gets full backing from the performances. You hate the Bareilly coach, Bhagwan more because of Jimmy Shergill’s oft-repeated yet menacing body language. You take to Shravan’s grit and Sunaina’s firm boldness because of Vineet Kumar Singh and Zoya Hussain. You cheer Shravan when he intimidates an oppressor because of the actor’s perfect depiction of a small-time bureaucrat.

You can’t think of this bureaucrat without thinking of the caste conflict brought out between Shravan’s boss and him is subtle yet powerful especially when compared to the blatant casteism that Bhagwan flaunts. Similarly, feminism takes a subtle flavour through Shravan and Sunaina’s relationship.

These are things you have come to expect in Anurag Kashyap films. And yet, Mukkabaaz is different because it feels like the director is finally out of the zone where he wants to make a point. This story is being told because the story ought to be told and not because he wants to tell the story.

The touch of humor and drama can be blamed for making that last hour feel like a bit of a stretch

This could also be why Mukkabaaz feels a little underwhelming. It has some great lines but it doesn’t have solid punch-lines. It has great writing but the writing doesn’t wear it’s political, social opinion on its sleeves. It has decent execution but the focus is on the narrative rather than style. Not that punch-lines, strong opinions or style was ever unenjoyable in Kashyap films, it’s just that here they are conspicuous by their absence – in a good way. It is nice to see a departure from the usual, even if it doesn’t completely work.

Thumbs up, by Subhash K Jha, Bolly Spice : ...This is the director’s most sensitive film to date. It hits a hard punch. And not just in the boxing ring. ... full review

Thumbs up, by Urmimala Banerjee, Bollywood Life : ...If you like realistic cinema with some fine writing and kickass performances, Mukkabaaz will not disappoint you a bit. The biggest takeaway is that it is a courageous film that does not shy away from calling a spade a spade. Anurag Kashyap holds together the elements with finesse appealing to all cinema lovers.... full review

Thumbs up, by SUPARNA SHARMA, Deccan Chronicle : ...Shergill, with one bad eye, is menacing when he wants to be. Mostly he remains a laidback but impending threat. Vineet’s Shravan is often slighted, leading to outbursts that heat up the screen with the rage and grief of a man who is not getting a chance to show his talent. Zoya Hussain uses her entire body to give a razor-sharp performance of a girl in defiance, communicating her defiance in sign language. She is unforgettable.... full review

Thumbs up, by Yatin Sharma, Desi Martini : ...The film didn't follow Kashyap's style and is completely different to what he usually focuses on. This is the kind of movie that you see and say THIS IS IT. ... full review

Thumbs up, by Yatharth Chauhan, Desi Martini : ...Mukkabaaz will give you the feels of the kind of cinema we had watched long back. Only this time, it’s well done! If we as audiences can locate a satisfactory cinematic ground around this kind of cinema, we can be certain to finally be treated with content coupled with entertainment. Mukkabaaz packs a solid punch, more down your throat than anywhere else! ... full review

Thumbs up, by Shefali Saxena, Desi Martini : ...Mukkabaaz is a must watch, also for people who don’t necessarily enjoy sports movies. It isn’t a high funda picture on the problems of a boxer in India, it’s a throughly entertaining masala movie which you can enjoy and reflect upon. It could have been half an hour to 20 minutes shorter because Anurag does get carried away in the narration of his characters. But you can safely put your money on this one and watch it raking prestigious honours if the antibodies don’t take offence to the real picture of our country that’s shown in the movie. ... full review

Thumbs up, by Rachit Gupta, Filmfare : ...Mukkabaaz is not your average sports film or love story. This one’s a funny, intense, dramatic and thrilling ride. It makes you laugh, cry and nervous in equal measure. It’s a great way to start the year. Employing an boxing jargon, this one has the precision of a TKO – it’s a technical knockout. ... full review

Thumbs up, by Rupleena Bose, FirstPost : ...The performances of the main and the supporting cast bring out each of the distinct characters they play. The film takes its time to tell its story (the runtime of the film's festival version is almost two-and-a-half hours). But then it takes time for love and fairness to fight their battles and stand up to the consuming hatred and vengeance of people with power. ... full review

Thumbs up, by Manjusha Radhakrishnan, Gulf News : ...But it shouldn’t stop you from giving this biopic a shot. It’s a delightful ringside view of athletes trying to make it in sports that are considered insignificant in India. Plus, how many times can you boast of watching a Hindi film that has flawed, but ferocious leads? ... full review

Thumbs up, by Rohit Vats, Hindustan Times : ...The 156-minute Mukkabaaz is the best film in last one year or so, and this year couldn’t start on a better note. Let’s cherish Vineet Singh and his thickheaded brawler with open heart. ... full review

Thumbs up, by Sushant Mehta, india today : ...Anurag Kashyap's Mukkabaaz, I know I'll hear of Vineet Kumar Singh in the future. More power to the underdog, you won't go down - not today.... full review

Thumbs up, by Deepa Gauri, Khaleej Times : ...With fantastic performances by Vineet and Zoya, 'Mukkabaaz' also shines for its cinematography and earthy music (though too many tracks take it closer to Bollywood's home-ground and the film quite a lengthy affair). ... full review

Thumbs up, by Umesh Punwani, koimoi : ...Don’t expect a Rocky or Gangs Of Wasseypur, because this is not. Growing comfortably in its own little space, Mukkabaaz fits perfectly to the genre of Anurag Kashyap films but this time it’s comparatively less dark & more entertaining. Don’t think, go watch! ... full review

Thumbs up, by Uday Bhatia, Live Mint : ...Vineet Singh is both physically convincing and touching as the embattled boxer—had a more successful actor been cast, Shravan’s hunger is unlikely to have come through so clearly. Kishan, with those great hurt eyes of his, is wonderful as well; why he’s cast so seldom in good Hindi films is a mystery. Sheirgill, through no fault of his own, is less memorable: the one-note antagonist he’s playing has nothing to do except escalate his villainy. There’s a brief period in the second half when the film seems to run out of ideas, yet even here Kashyap finds a detail, a scene, something to tide the audience by – like when Shravan decides to get unreasonably mad at his friend for using “doubtless” in a sentence. ... full review

Thumbs up, by Mayank Shekhar, MiD DAY : ...Kashyap uses sport (even romance) as fine entry point to speak truth to power, along with the phoniness of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai', where we apparently love our country but hate our countrymen. 'Bahut hua sammaan' as a hook is to Mukkabaaz what 'Kehke loonga' was to Gangs Of Wasseypur. And, really, kehke li hai, completely. ... full review

Thumbs up, by Raja Sen, NDTV : ...The director ends the film by saying 'Bhaarat Mata Ki Jai,' and those words coming from an envelope-pushing filmmaker express, on the one hand, genuine love for the land that gives him stories and characters and language, and, at the same time, bitter sarcasm for a government that mistreats its people and threatens storytelling. This is a country that needs not merely the best but the most ambitious, the most willing, the most reckless. ... full review

Thumbs up, by Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV : ...Mukkabaaz packs a massive punch. Watch it because it is one of the more important films to have come out of the Mumbai movie industry in recent times. ... full review

Thumbs up, by Rajeev Masand, News18.com : ...At the heart of the film is Vineet Kumar Singh who conveys both Shravan’s physical prowess and his emotional vulnerability with confidence and conviction. He captures Shravan’s urgency and hunger with incredible zeal as he punches, pounds, and clobbers his way on his journey from brawler to boxer. ... full review

Thumbs up, Sify Movies : ...This is the Director's most sensitive film to date. It hits a hard punch. And not just in the boxing ring. ... full review

Thumbs up, by Namrata Joshi, The Hindu : ...The realistic finale which is more about off-bout negotiations than a knock-out punch end Mukkabaaz in a low key manner. But “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” (with a big dose of sarcasm) instead of “The End” plate, after the disclaimer in the finale, is where Kashyap knocks it out of the park. Just as he does in naming his chief villain — a Brahmin, mind you — Bhagwan. Chuckle along and ponder some. ... full review

Thumbs up, by Renuka Vyavahare, Times of India : ...Mukkabaaz is a total knockout. The not-just-a-boxing film must not be missed as it puts forth a message that's most relevant in today's world... full review

So-So, Bollywood Hungama : ...On the whole, MUKKABAAZ is Anurag Kashyap's massiest film till date. It scores thanks to the performances, dialogues, action and some well executed sequences. But the long length, incoherent direction combined with a low buzz plays spoilsport and would surely affect the prospects of the film at the ticket window. ... full review

So-So, by Rahul Bharadwaj, Desi Martini : ...Mukkabaaz is surely the best offering compared to the other two absolute drag options this week which have come from Bollywood. Fans of Kashyap style of movie making might enjoy it but too those who are not his avid fans this one will make you feel it could have been better. ... full review

So-So, by T J Reddy, fullhyd.com : ...The lack of these hollow frills when dealing with such a straightforward story is what keeps the movie from being either a stone-faced cult classic or a universally beloved entertainer. It balances itself on two boats quite well when it substitutes those sparkly arrows from the TV serial with stinging blows courtesy of Shravan Singh's gloves and Anurag Kashyap's pen. ... full review

So-So, by Jaidev Hemmady, Movie Talkies : ...Nevertheless, Mukkabaaz is a grim and gritty fare, that deserves a watch, but will it be India's answer to 'Rocky'? Do watch the film and find out...... full review

So-So, by Kunal Guha, Mumbai Mirror : ...Anurag Kashyap fans may be a bit disappointed here. The filmmaker who doesn't hold his blows, seems constricted in telling this story. Not that there aren't enough bloody noses and hammered eyes, but the overall treatment seems to be tweaked for universal appeal. There are scenes which scream Kashyap, but it's a 'milds' version of the filmmaker. ... full review

So-So, by Manisha Lakhe, Now Running.com : ...Now Anurag Kashyap has given us some amazing cinema. But this khichdi of romance and revenge and sports and politics created by several writers is on many levels just a mish mash, tasty in parts but still a pandering to the image of 'Anurag Kashyap knows small town North India'. I wish I could have loved this movie more. Then realised, I didn't care for any character enough to love the film. ... full review

So-So, by Sreehari Nair, Rediff : ...The tragedy of Mukkabaaz is not that it aims low; the tragedy is that it aims low and hits. ... full review

So-So, by Nandini Ramnath, Scroll.in : ...The muddle over whether Mukkabaaz is a love story with boxing as a backdrop or a boxing drama that has a romantic sub-plot is never resolved.... full review

I remember watching Rajneeti with my mom. It was an uncomfortable experience due to certain scenes. Since then I always check parental guidance on wogma before going out for movie with family. I don’t know of any other site that provides parental guidance. But I have noticed that you have stopped providing this info now. Please bring it back, it was very useful.

Oh I am sorry @Anshul. I had written it, forgot to paste it in the appropriate field in the backend. You can see it now.
