Milan Talkies - Preview

Actually, there is nothing other than the fact that Tigmanshu Dhulia has picked what looks like an extremely plain love story to tell. And that makes me curious; curious enough to not to dismiss it as yet another couple is going to face opposition from family because of x, y, or z.

Unfortunately, other than that, there is nothing that makes you want to watch the film. The performances look ordinary. The dialogue seems plain. The romantic situations don’t exactly induce an ‘aaawwww’. Just hope I won’t have to pay a huge price for my curiosity.

Milan Talkies releases on 15 March 2019.

Thumbs up, by Vishal Verma, Glamsham.com : ...MILAN TALKIES is not just a love story, it’s an expression, Tigmanshu Dhulia’s offbeat tribute to Bollywood beats some right notes on reality and this mix of fact and fiction is interestingly nostalgic, intimate and intriguing. Not everyone’s cup of coffee but if you have the taste and patience then it’s worth the sip and the dip that it offers.... full review

Thumbs up, by Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV : ...But there isn't much in Milan Talkies that could be dismissed as fakery. It is a thoroughly enjoyable film that, despite its 140-minute runtime, manages to skirt around major bumps on the way. There are some no doubt, but the film never veers off its chosen course. If you let it grow on you, you will end up liking it.... full review

Thumbs up, by Subhash K Jha, Sify Movies : ...Just like Tigmanshu Dhulia himself the boy from Allahabad who made it big in Bollywood. Milan Talkies tells us it is okay to dream of creating your own Mughal-e-Azam in real and real life. Because you never know who is watching.... full review

So-So, by Devesh Sharma, Filmfare : ...All-in-all, watching Milan Talkies is like watching a flawed but fantastic idea taking shape and dissolving upon itself. You leave the theatre wondering what could have been if Tigmanshu had a smooth sailing throughout...... full review

So-So, by Anna MM Vertticad, FirstPost : ...Maithili is one of Goddess Sita's names. Mythology tested this woman unjustly and in ways that are beyond the endurance of any normal human being. In Dhulia's Allahabad in the 2010s, she is still being forced to walk through fire simply for the right to live a normal life and be happy. Milan Talkies is lots of fun, but there is so much more to it than meets the eye.... full review

So-So, by Johnson Thomas, Free Press Journal : ...As the title suggests, this film revolves around a single-screen movie theatre where an ageing projectionist (Sanjay Mishra) plays Cupid to Annu and his beloved, Maithali. The film tries to portray the clash between ages in satirical jousts but fails to make it meaningful enough. While it’s assertion of the local dialect, effusiveness of language and contrary positioning, is unerring, there’s not much depth to this telling. We’ve seen it all before and the light comic approach as a panacea to all ills only makes it seem ridiculous!... full review

So-So, by Jyoti Sharma Bawa, Hindustan Times : ...He is ably supported by the cast – Ali Fazal, Shraddha, Ashutosh and Sanjay are particularly delightful. There are a few road bumps though – the film’s length and entirely forgettable music.... full review

So-So, by Rachit Gupta, Times of India : ...The film has good music by Akriti Kakkar and Rana Mazumder and some scenes, genuinely have good ideas, too. But, those are like flashes in the pan. In a bid to serve up a gourmet of entertainment, Milan Talkies ends up becoming a goulash of commercial fare. The effort to entertain and be dramatic shows and that’s never a good sign for a film celebrating the love of cinema.... full review

Thumbs down, by Bobby Sing, Bobby Talks Cinema.com : ...Therefore just avoid watching it in the theaters and try it if you must as it gets released on the online portal.... full review

Thumbs down, by Rahul Desai, Film Companion : ...I’m still clueless about how a movie about a storyteller in love manages to lack both, the love of stories and a story of love.... full review

Thumbs down, by R. M. Vijayakar, India West : ...Ali Fazal is sincere but routine. Shraddha Srinath only has moments, and like her Southern colleagues, quicksilver expressions. Kher hams so does Ashutosh Rana. There is another Rana in the film – Deepraj Rana. His track is not only superfluous but, frankly, nutty.... full review

Thumbs down, by Umesh Punwani, koimoi : ...All said and done, Milan Talkies is filmy torture! There are some movies whom you label as the ‘headache gifting’ ones, but this delivers you the headache personally at the doorstep of your head. Just skip it!... full review

Thumbs down, by Mayank Shekhar, MiD DAY : ...The film itself though does little to the genre, besides deliberately revisit some old-world Bollywood cliches. Maybe there's some subversion (that I'm unable to see). Maybe a full-blown, big-screen romance hinges much on the scale, for effective suspension of belief, which is sadly missing. Either way, one suspects, much of this movie pretty much remains in the filmmaker's imagination/head. Rest of it, quite honestly, gave me a bit of a headache.... full review

Thumbs down, by Kunal Guha, Mumbai Mirror : ...It’s difficult to imagine that Dhulia (who directed Paan gh Tomar and Haasil) has plummeted to such a low. It seems like this film was made in such a crazed frenzy to catch up with the wave of small towns stories that the makers couldn’t wait for the script to commence shooting.... full review

Thumbs down, by Sukanya Verma, Rediff : ...Dhulia gets the milieu down pat and has able support from his cast who looks like they belong to the world he constructs.... full review
