Fukrey Returns

wogma rating: Watch if you have nothing better to do (?)

quick review:

The best part of the film is its title track that recaps the previous film. Fukrey Returns had a chance to engage and entertain had it not been for its episodic, often nauseating, slapsticky humour.

Fukrey Returns - Preview

Choocha and Bholi Punjaban are back. They seem to carry the same quirks as the last time. So, the slightly engaging novelty will be missing this time around. The trailer doesn’t have anything to look forward to except the hope that Pankaj Tripathi might have a bigger role. That’s too little to hang on.

In fact, the jokes might seem to be a tad juvenile. From the reviews, the music seems to be no great shakes. What do we hang on to? Just, crossed fingers, I guess.

Fukrey Returns releases on 8 December, 2017.

Music Reviews:
Bollywood Hungama – "2.5/5"
glamsham - "3/5"
Milliblog - "Aptly titled soundtrack that’s a far cry from Ram Sampat’s superior original."

A story-building game kids play at parties, has one person start a story with one line. Each child has to add a line to the story in turn. The story takes direction according to the imagination of the group. It is a lot of fun and often an entertaining, engaging story comes of it. Fukrey Returns is a film made out of one such story. The overall story is interesting and amusing, but the details needed to make a kids’ party story into a film, are just not funny.

It is not that Fukrey Returns doesn’t evoke emotion. But, I am assuming disgust and boredom aren’t what they were going for.

So, from poison being sucked out of a snake-bitten butt to jokes about organ trafficking to laughing at someone because they are dark-skinned to objectifying women – Fukrey takes a shot at anything that might get kids at a party to laugh. This is unfortunate considering the overall plot of these four good-for-nothings finding themselves in a soup caused by an underworld don is quite refreshing, especially in the logicless slapstick genre.

The back and forth, the out-smarting and the double-crossing are disconnected and episodic. Yet, they could have worked if the connecting fibre wasn’t juvenile humor. Sure, some of the humour comes through to make you smile at the silliness of it all. But, it is out of pity – for the makers, actors and the audience.

The biggest losers in this venture are the actors. For each one of them, is quite capable. That they get the timing right is of no consequence when it is an unfunny quip or scene. Their talent is exploited by making them repetitive. Also, Ali Fazal and Manjot Singh are redundant. In terms of both quantity and quality, their roles are as dispensable, as those of Vishakha Singh and Priya Anand, are gratuitous. Altogether these four characters are a little more relevant to the plot than the item number and significantly less relevant than the individual characters, ‘chungu mungu’, Richa Chadda’s henchmen, and the lioness and her cub.

It is not that Fukrey Returns doesn’t evoke emotion. But, I am assuming disgust and boredom aren’t what they were going for.

Thumbs up, by Subhash K Jha, Bolly Spice : ...Interestingly this is not the only bad-breath moment in this film. We come across one earlier on when Pulkit’s Hunny demands a “French kiss” (that’s what he calls a liplock) from girlfriend (Priya Anand) and she refuses since he’s non-veg. ... full review

Thumbs up, by Archana Kadam, Desi Martini : ...Fukrey Returns ‘returns’ even more funnier, goofier and wittier than its first instalment. Funny, entertaining and plenty of LOL-worthy moments. Varun Sharma is absolutely cute and one adorable goofball ! Go watch it for a laughter filled weekend ... full review

Thumbs up, by Johnson Thomas, Free Press Journal : ...Director Mrigdeep Singh Lamba is also far more assured and deft in his handling of the material. Peppy musical insertions and an upbeat background alchemy energise the experience further. The original film did not manage to get as many laughs as this one does and that is reason enough to make this an all-out no-holds-barred entertainer! ... full review

Thumbs up, by Umesh Punwani, koimoi : ...Fukrey Returns is one super-entertaining movie. Retaining the magic of the first part, this easily is one of the best comedies of the year. Tiger also plays an important role in the film so yeh Tiger Zinda Hai jab tak aa jaaye Tiger Zinda Hai. ... full review

Thumbs up, Sify Movies : ...Bad breath gets a bad name in "Fukrey". But it's all in good taste. Circumscribing a world of chit funds, bodypart smuggling, animal poaching and French kissing, the wickedly anarchic world of Fukrey Returns is much smarter and far more intelligent than it outwardly seems. This is a world of rapidfire happenings where what goes around doesn't necessarily come around.... full review

Thumbs up, by Reza Noorani, Times of India : ...Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani with director Mrighdeep Singh Lamba have created a successful franchise, and there is ample scope to make a Fukrey 3, but this time, we hope it doesn't take them four years to do so... full review

Thumbs up, by Ritika Handoo, Zee News : ...Pulkit, Ali, Manjot and Varun exude the freshness and give us major 'dejachoo'. The background tracks have a nice rhythm to it and the title track will stay with you. 'Fukrey Returns' is laced with funny dialogues to make it a great watch this weekend. ... full review

So-So, Bollywood Hungama : ...On the whole, FUKREY RETURNS is a fun, clean film that works despite the illogical and slightly unconvincing plot. With no other significant Hindi movie in theatres around, FUKREY RETURNS definitely has a chance of excelling at the box office. ... full review

So-So, by Ankita Chaurasia , Bollywood Life : ...Despite its flaws, Fukrey Returns falls short only when compared to the first part. As a stand alone film, it manages to keep you engaged throughout with some really funny scenes that will have you rolling on the floor. If you are looking for some comic relief, this is the film that you should head to.... full review

So-So, by Smita Vyas Kumar , Desi Martini : ...The movie is far too long at two hours plus. At under two hours it would have had just the right amount of laughs and action. As it stands, the humour is more sitcom like and keeps you entertained in parts without being involved. The movie just about passes muster thanks to Choocha, Bholi Punjaban and Panditji. But it’s December, and the weather is great, we are in a mood to forgive, wind down and enjoy the holiday season. If you are not very exacting about your entertainment this will work for you. ... full review

So-So, by Zinia Bandyopadhyay, Desi Martini : ...Watch the film for some genuinely comic moments and for Varun Sharma’s performance. The way too similar situations and circumstances in the film might make you a little disappointed, but cannot be reason enough to miss the film. ... full review

So-So, by K K Rai.Reena, STARDUST : ...On the whole, the film is a clean entertainer and second part should attract the viewers to theatres. An average fare... full review

Thumbs down, by Anna MM Vertticad, annavetticadgoes2themovies : ...Sharma’s killer comic talent and the lines he has been given are the driving force of Fukrey Returns. Pretty much everything else about it is listless. Even the presence of a tiger and a cub on screen have not been sufficiently mined for effect. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Bobby Sing, Bobby Talks Cinema.com : ...So FUKREY RETURNS can be seen for just these two performers but nothing else... full review

Thumbs down, by Deepa Gahlot, cinemaah : ...The 2013 film Fukrey was mildly amusing and certainly not deserving of a sequel. Anyway, whether we want it or not Fukrey Returns, and it is Mrigdeep Singh Lamba who brings the four Dilli duffers back. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Shubha Shetty Saha, Daily Bhaskar : ...he 2013 original Fukrey was a refreshing, funny story of four friends getting into a mess after running into a female don< Bholi. Punjaban. Its 2017 sequel is as unfunny and convoluted.... full review

Thumbs down, by SUPARNA SHARMA, Deccan Chronicle : ...These lovely characters, inhabited by a very talented set of actors (excluding Ali Fazal), are buried under a dreary screenplay and an imbecile plot. While all the actors (again, excluding Ali Fazal, and his screen g’friend) were itching to act silly and have a blast, the film’s writers and director let them down. Fukrey Returns’ screenplay has been written by Vipul Vig and Mrighdeep Singh Lamba. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Dev Raj Gulati, Desi Martini : ...Fukrey Returns could be viewed in your spare time. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Rahul Bharadwaj, Desi Martini : ...Stay away from this one if you are in love with the first Fukrey, trust me this one will make you regret walking into the theatre. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Rachit Gupta, Filmfare : ...Just a straight, no-holds-barred attempt at making a thrilling, funny film. Its entertaining for a while, but in the end there's just no value, especially if you've seen the original. ... full review

Thumbs down, by T J Reddy, fullhyd.com : ...Making up for some blatantly juvenile word-based humour is the film's electric editing. As the spoken words land with a sickening thud, the smooth cuts between characters whose expressions build off each other find those jagged gems of comedy in the murky landscape of this film. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Rohit Vats, Hindustan Times : ...On the contrary, Fukrey Returns tries too hard to go the thriller way. It’s much more ‘heroic’ than what the audience expected Chu Cha and his group to be.... full review

Thumbs down, by Suhani Singh, india today : ...All good things come to an end so that they aren't stretched and made bad. Perhaps they should listen to the advice of their own creation Hunny who says "Yeh aukaad ka zamaana hai". Not risking another Fukrey unless they have a amazing trump card up their sleeves would be a step in that direction.... full review

Thumbs down, by Uday Bhatia, Live Mint : ...Fukrey was rooted in the everyday: the comedy seemed to arise naturally from the slackers’ surroundings. The sequel, though, has the desperation and unfocussed energy of a work that’s not sure why it exists. Any film that begins with someone sucking snake venom out of someone else’s behind is clearly lacking for ideas. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Sonia Lulla, MiD DAY : ...But, the misses outnumber the hits. A screenplay that appears promising in the first half is interrupted by far too many twists, which do little to lift the film. In fact, in an attempt to verbalise every development, the humour runs thin from the onset of the second half. Injunctions of Choocha's clowning in such instances appear forced, and fail to inspire laughs. Unfortunately, despite their acting prowess, Vishakha Singh and Priya Anand are reduced to mere props. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Jaidev Hemmady, Movie Talkies : ...In conclusion, Fukrey Returns is the weaker twin when compared to Fukrey so choose wisely...... full review

Thumbs down, by Kunal Guha, Mumbai Mirror : ...If one approaches this one as a comedy, it would be mildly satisfying as it sporadically strays into the thriller space and the strategically-planted comic elements seem forced and constructed. But hope for nothing, and you won't be bitterly disappointed. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV : ...Sharma is a livewire who is a delight to watch and Tripathi, as always, is outstanding. Wish one could say the same about the rest of the cast - and the film as a whole. For a film that aspires to be a full-on laugh riot, Fukrey Returns is a bit of a trudge.... full review

Thumbs down, by Kriti Tulsiani, News18.com : ...Watch Fukrey Returns if you like but don’t expect the spark of the original. Plus, the giggles are more like a reminder of the original Fukrey and nothing more. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Manisha Lakhe, Now Running.com : ...All in all Fukrey Returns is like being offered water from Mantriji's pedicure bowl as a drink. It's disgusting and it stinks. ... full review

Thumbs down, by Sukanya Verma, Rediff : ...Where most members of Fukrey Returns are as superfluous as its new, blah soundtrack, the whimsical troika of Sharma, Chadha and Pankaj Tripathi do their best to lift its plodding pace with their distinct brand of humour. ... full review

Thumbs down, by UDITA JHUNJHUNWALA, Scroll.in : ...Samrat and Sharma get maximum screen time, with the latter being the centrepiece as the intellectually challenged butt of the joke. His antics are only cute for so long before you want to clip him around the head and exclaim WTFukrey!... full review

Thumbs down, by Rummana, yahoo! India : ...Watch it if you must. You wouldn’t really regret it if you even give this one a miss. ... full review
