It’s like any other love story that struggles with familial approval. Since the approval is in focus, there is barely any attempt to convince you of the love. Here, the disapproval isn’t spine-chilling either.Read more
Dhadak’s premise seems extremely repetitive. I am sure even before Ek Duje Ke Liye in 1981, there were films about families of lovers vehemently opposing their union. Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, seven years later was similar too. There must have been a few in between and since. This is not accounting for the likes of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge where the families had different reactions and thus the movies, different conclusions. But, the narrative was almost always the same. They fall in love, they ruffle feathers with their other loved ones, they fight the opposition, they either overcome or they don’t.
The details at each of these steps is what separates one from the other. But, somehow they seem to be all covered too. Especially, in Dhadak, the blooming relationship between the two leads reminded me a lot of the equation between Kundan and Zoya in Raanjhanaa, which was nothing like any of the films mentioned above.
Other than that, the lead actors aren’t enticing either. Janhvi Kapoor’s dialogue delivery is too plain and while Ishaan Khattar might have a good performance under his belt, the character doesn’t seem interesting at all.
The biggest question of them all, “Why Sairaat?” The film was hardly inspiring by itself. Sure, it did well at the box office, but it was long and it dragged. It had nothing new to say and didn’t say the old stuff in new ways either. The climax was stunning and has stuck through the months, but I still wouldn’t call it “worth” the almost 3 hour run-time!
Anyway, as much as I don’t see the point, the film has been made and it shall be seen. I promise to work hard on leaving my pre-conceived misgivings outside the theater.
Dhadak releases on 20 July, 2018.

Dhadak doesn’t strum a string in the heart, neither does it drone you down to sleep. It just happens and you accept it happening to you – at arm’s length, as if you are reading an item in the newspaper and turned the page after reading the headline – uninvolved.
Watch it and forget it.
Maybe it’s the oft-repeated story-line to be blamed, or maybe the ever-so-plain story-telling or maybe the complete lack of surprise or of course the combination and more that doesn’t get you hooked. On the other hand, the performances, the music, the hope for something different keeps you vaguely interested. Yes, if you have seen Sairaat, you will often catch yourself being on alert for the similarities and differences from the original. I couldn’t help but be on the look for the adaptation from the milieu in Sairaat’s Maharashtra to that in Dhadak’s Rajasthan. Unfortunately, but for the overt attempt at the supposedly Rajasthani accent, and the outfits, there is little attempt to adapt.
That’s why Dhadak seems like a superfluous effort. The language kind-a sort-a adapts, the clothes adapt, but the story does little to reflect the change in social structure. Just a couple of lines from the protagonist’s father to indicate the caste difference is all – there is no depiction of a power equation between Madhu’s family and Parthavi’s – not caste-wise at least. Sure, there is an attempt to indicate a distinction in class and political power, but that too comes across as functional.
The only things that keep you mildly engaged then are the music, which wanes off after the first hour or so, and the performances. The supporting cast doesn’t go over-the-top and keeps things real. Janhvi Kapoor is surprisingly not as bland as she comes across in the trailer. Or maybe it was just my rock-bottom expectations. Even so, her effort is not a complete write-off. Ishaan Khatter is earnest and convinces you that he has lived with modest means and is smitten by Parthavi, even though the story offers no apparent reason for him to be so head-over-heels in love with her.
Through the first hour, I wondered what exactly attracted Madhu to Parthavi as a person or Parthavi to Madhu. That he pursued her, that she was out-of-reach? That she was haughty, that he was persistent? And I figured, that I have wondered about this right from the times I saw Vasu and Sapna as a kid or Raj and Simran as a young adult. Through the decades we have been asked to take the lead couple’s falling in love , as a given. The problems they face is the focus. And I have always struggled with caring about their problems because I am hardly convinced of their love.
I guess, every 4-5 years Hindi films needs a “great love story” where the families just cannot let the couple be. Dhadak could have been the one for this decade, but I guess, we will need more. Meanwhile, watch it and forget it.

Thumbs up, Bollywood Hungama : ...On the whole, DHADAK is a simple tale told in a beautiful way. Despite being a remake of an iconic film, it manages to stand up on its feet and entertain the audiences thoroughly. At the box office, the youth is going to savour this flick big time which will ensure commercial success. ... full review
Thumbs up, by Tushar P. Joshi, Bollywood Life : ...Dhadak is a stellar debut for newcomers Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor. It also is a beautiful homage to the original Sairat. Janhvi and Ishaan are here to stay. Welcome to the mad world of showbiz.... full review
Thumbs up, by Devansh Sharma, Filmfare : ...It's not as raw and earthy as Sairat but Dhadak packs an emotional punch that is equal to the original’s. Carry a box of tissues as it might come in handy towards the end... ... full review
Thumbs up, by Umesh Punwani, koimoi : ...All said and done, Dhadak is the heartbeat of love! Supremely performed by Ishaan & Janhvi, this would go down in the list of remakes well made. Shashank Khaitan has another winner under his belt. ... full review
Thumbs up, by Komal Nahta, Komal Nahta : ...On the whole, Dhadak is a good entertainer and will emerge victorious at the ticket windows. The outstanding performances of Ishaan and Janhvi could take the film to the ‘A’ class level too. ... full review
Thumbs up, by Mayank Shekhar, MiD DAY : ...Khaitan does the same with Dhadak, carefully choosing his ensemble cast (Ashutosh Rana, and others), gently cranking up the lilting background score at almost balletic moments, capturing multiple moods, and locations, with tender love and care. ... full review
So-So, by Rohit Bhatnagar, Deccan Chronicle : ...Dhadak might be a much anticipated film of the season, but it is nothing more than a launchpad for Ishaan and Janhvi Kapoor. Rather watch Sairat for realistic cinema. ... full review
So-So, by Rohit Vats, Hindustan Times : ...Further, Dhadak is not about caste ideologies and how people are defined by them. Though Khaitan has tried to deliver subtle messages by showing Janhvi irritated when she fails to get simple household chores right or by presenting Ishaan as a working class hardworking youngster, in the end, all this boils down to launching two potential future stars. ... full review
So-So, by Kunal Guha, Mumbai Mirror : ...Manjule’s masterpiece was a touching tale of caste conflict. It covered societal evils while breezing through the various stages of an intimate relationship. The evolution of its characters was fluid and the final jolt was hair-raising. Dhadak is only a first copy from Thailand that milks the original to a point that the cow would deem objectionable.... full review
So-So, by ANISH MOHANTY, Planet Bollywood : ...'Dhadak' is not a patch on 'Sairat'. If you have seen the far more superlative original, it is difficult not to draw comparisons between the two. Having said that, as a standalone film 'Dhadak' is far from being disengaging and manages to keep you entertained throughout most of its duration. The ones who have not seen the original are bound to enjoy it more than the ones who have. ... full review
Thumbs down, by Bobby Sing, Bobby Talks Cinema.com : ...And this truly left me stunned, realizing the fact that the so experienced and successful re-makers couldn’t even differentiate between the two entirely distinctive concepts of Honour Killing and Revenge. ... full review
Thumbs down, by Anna MM Vertticad, FirstPost : ...Sadly, Janhvi lacks personality and delivers a colourless performance as Parthavi. Ishaan is kinda cute, but he too does not yet possess the screen presence to make a mark in this lacklustre scenario.... full review
Thumbs down, by Samrudhi Ghosh, india today : ...With everything so glossed up, the climax does not hit you as hard as the original, even though it is literally delivered with a thud. If you are satisfied with a pale, insipid version of Sairat, go watch Dhadak. ... full review
Thumbs down, by Shubhra Gupta, indian express : ...Ishaan: As far as I can recall, I think dancing and acting have always been my primary passions. I did do a little bit of formal training in Western dancing for a year but dancing is something that I have been doing all my life. I did want to train formally as an actor. Had I the opportunity to train in acting, perhaps I would have found myself a place to explore acting training but I sort of learnt on the job. I did do a theatre course here and there. Also, I assisted in Udta Punjab and an unreleased indie film as an assistant director. Finally, you look around to see the people who belong to this tale—Aditya Kumar as Roop, Parthavi’s menacing brother, and Kharaj Mukherjee, the Santa Claus figure in Kolkata—stand out. ... full review
Thumbs down, by Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV : ...But that definitely isn't meant to be an inspiration for Dhadak to shrug off its inertia. The film saunters rather than sprints. In Sairat, that strategy clicked famously because that film had its heart in the right place. Dhadak doesn't. The result is a grind that pretty frames and fresh faces cannot mitigate. ... full review
Thumbs down, by Sreehari Nair, Rediff : ...Maybe it is Bollywood's arrogance; its way of telling the regional film industries that mediocrity is their province and that they will reclaim it from every act of high-creativity. ... full review
Thumbs down, by Kennith Rosario, The Hindu : ...The music finds its origins in Sairat, barring Dhadak’s title track, which manages to stand out, both in impact and picturisation. Despite a heavy focus on the visuals, there’s frequent brand placement, which you would least expect from a Dharma production, with a lavish budget at disposal... full review
