Dhadak’s premise seems extremely repetitive. I am sure even before Ek Duje Ke Liye in 1981, there were films about families of lovers vehemently opposing their union. Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, seven years later was similar too. There must have been a few in between and since. This is not accounting for the likes of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge where the families had different reactions and thus the movies, different conclusions. But, the narrative was almost always the same. They fall in love, they ruffle feathers with their other loved ones, they fight the opposition, they either overcome or they don’t.
The details at each of these steps is what separates one from the other. But, somehow they seem to be all covered too. Especially, in Dhadak, the blooming relationship between the two leads reminded me a lot of the equation between Kundan and Zoya in Raanjhanaa, which was nothing like any of the films mentioned above.
Other than that, the lead actors aren’t enticing either. Janhvi Kapoor’s dialogue delivery is too plain and while Ishaan Khattar might have a good performance under his belt, the character doesn’t seem interesting at all.
The biggest question of them all, “Why Sairaat?” The film was hardly inspiring by itself. Sure, it did well at the box office, but it was long and it dragged. It had nothing new to say and didn’t say the old stuff in new ways either. The climax was stunning and has stuck through the months, but I still wouldn’t call it “worth” the almost 3 hour run-time!
Anyway, as much as I don’t see the point, the film has been made and it shall be seen. I promise to work hard on leaving my pre-conceived misgivings outside the theater.

Dhadak doesn’t strum a string in the heart, neither does it drone you down to sleep. It just happens and you accept it happening to you – at arm’s length, as if you are reading an item in the newspaper and turned the page after reading the headline – uninvolved.
Watch it and forget it.
Maybe it’s the oft-repeated story-line to be blamed, or maybe the ever-so-plain story-telling or maybe the complete lack of surprise or of course the combination and more that doesn’t get you hooked. On the other hand, the performances, the music, the hope for something different keeps you vaguely interested. Yes, if you have seen Sairaat, you will often catch yourself being on alert for the similarities and differences from the original. I couldn’t help but be on the look for the adaptation from the milieu in Sairaat’s Maharashtra to that in Dhadak’s Rajasthan. Unfortunately, but for the overt attempt at the supposedly Rajasthani accent, and the outfits, there is little attempt to adapt.
That’s why Dhadak seems like a superfluous effort. The language kind-a sort-a adapts, the clothes adapt, but the story does little to reflect the change in social structure. Just a couple of lines from the protagonist’s father to indicate the caste difference is all – there is no depiction of a power equation between Madhu’s family and Parthavi’s – not caste-wise at least. Sure, there is an attempt to indicate a distinction in class and political power, but that too comes across as functional.
The only things that keep you mildly engaged then are the music, which wanes off after the first hour or so, and the performances. The supporting cast doesn’t go over-the-top and keeps things real. Janhvi Kapoor is surprisingly not as bland as she comes across in the trailer. Or maybe it was just my rock-bottom expectations. Even so, her effort is not a complete write-off. Ishaan Khatter is earnest and convinces you that he has lived with modest means and is smitten by Parthavi, even though the story offers no apparent reason for him to be so head-over-heels in love with her.
Through the first hour, I wondered what exactly attracted Madhu to Parthavi as a person or Parthavi to Madhu. That he pursued her, that she was out-of-reach? That she was haughty, that he was persistent? And I figured, that I have wondered about this right from the times I saw Vasu and Sapna as a kid or Raj and Simran as a young adult. Through the decades we have been asked to take the lead couple’s falling in love , as a given. The problems they face is the focus. And I have always struggled with caring about their problems because I am hardly convinced of their love.
I guess, every 4-5 years Hindi films needs a “great love story” where the families just cannot let the couple be. Dhadak could have been the one for this decade, but I guess, we will need more. Meanwhile, watch it and forget it.

I am following your reviews from couple of months and till date all your reviews are accurate. Thanks for your detailed reviews.
I did take the time to watch this one finally. The expectations were not met for me. I found the movie way too long. The detailed portions trying to establish how the love couple is settling to life together were too detailed and dragged the film.
On performances front, both the newcomers were good at their characters.
