Fukrey 3

wogma rating: Switch channels if it's on cable (?)

quick review:

The choice of humour is so random.

The creativity in being disgusting, so disgusting.

How? Why? What? So many questions that my numbed brain doesn’t want answers to.

Sure, Fukrey 3 strings a relatively coherent story together. And I use “coherent” rather loosely here. “Relatively” too. But, the choice of scenes to bring the film together is mind-blowingly incoherent and unrelated. It is one rambling scene after another. And I am not sure it makes it better or worse that they try to make the rambling humorous.

The human body’s plumbing system is the proposed star of this film.

Believe me, I tried to find the heart of the film which attempted a commentary on water shortage and how it is a global issue that needs international cooperation. But, failed. Regular readers know I need the slightest of a social message for me to appreciate a film. This once though, I just couldn’t make myself do it.

I couldn’t get past the crass nature of things that seemed to have fascinated the makers. The human body’s plumbing system is the star of this film. It starts with a character discussing the tightness of his underwear’s elastic goes through cleaning bums and reaches a mix of sweat and pee.

When this is what is supposed to entertain us and provoke our thoughts, I understand that writers would not want to spend time and energy on building characters or their arcs, making sure details add up to make more than just a sum of the parts, and so on.

You would think, they would at least spend time on the lines and the exchanges between characters. We don’t have that either. A good part of the film is spent with characters looking at each other and making faces. Each character is assigned a face to make and they stick to it pretty much throughout the film. I think the film could have been cut short by a good half hour in this long-long, two-and-a-half-hour-long film if they didn’t at each other so much.

Panditji (Pankaj Tripathi) is required to be understanding of whatever Chucha (Varun Sharma) comes up with, with his puppy eyes and innocent-looking, so-called cute face. Bholi (Richa Chadha) is always faking confidence, while Hunny (Pulkit Samrat) is just going through the motions and Lali (Manjoy Singh) is generally frustrated. Now, they all do as told and with whatever comic timing they can muster. But there is only so much you can build up with a one-line direction.

You know how it is a well-written villain if you hate him from the gut, you hate the villain here too. But the problem is, you hate almost every character. Nothing is appealing about any of the characters. No, not even Chucha, because the audience is asked to laugh at him, at his stupidity, at his slowness. I do not find that funny.

It is one rambling scene after another.

When a film that wants to be funny makes you sad, you know it has written rock bottom. So, what if they cutely play around with chemistry? No, not chemistry between characters. That, there is none. Actual chemistry. Yeah, it is that kind of a movie. The random situational humour could have worked, but it couldn’t rise above its slapstick core.

Thumbs up, by Urmimala Banerjee, Bollywood Life : ...Fukrey 3 might not a comedy that makes you laugh uproariously but some of its comic punches are terrific. The climax is very entertaining. Varun Sharma shows us once again why he is the heart and soul of the Fukrey series... full review

Thumbs up, by Monika Rawal Kukreja, Hindustan Times : ...This comedy of errors is an absolute time-pass material that doesn't want to be thought-provoking or any sort of a conversation starter. Yet, you would enjoy it and come out of the theatre smiling, or maybe laughing depending on your taste for humour. And if you can't stand toilet humour, please take this review as a warning.... full review

Thumbs up, by Umesh Punwani, koimoi : ...All said and done, Fukrey 3’s title has the movie’s rating secretly hidden in it if you look closely! It continues to own & flaunt the story’s foolhardy nature, boasting about something that has become extremely rare to find – harmless fun.... full review

Thumbs up, by Himesh mankad, Pinkvilla : ...Fukrey 3 is an entertaining ride as director Mrighdeep Singh Lamba packages the film with well-integrated gags and quirky one-liners. The biggest win for the film comes with the smart writing which leads itself organically to some laugh-out-loud moments. Varun Sharma as Choocha is a show-stealer bringing the house down with laughter and the entire gang of Fukra’s – Pulkit Samrat, Pankaj Tripathi, and Manoj Singh – ensure the right energies on screen. While the editing could have been crisper, Fukrey 3 has enough comic moments in it to emerge a winner at the box office.... full review

So-So, by Rohit Bhatnagar, Free Press Journal : ...In his third attempt, a lot more times Mrig pushes to take the franchise forward which might even look forced but his characters save it with their performances.... full review

So-So, by Sonil Dedhia, News18.com : ...The characters and setting from the original are still present in this new outing, but the spontaneity is missing. The humor in the film is inconsistent; however, there are a few fantastic lines that will make you laugh out loud. The film has its moments but it’s nowhere as entertaining as the original film... full review

So-So, by Sukanya Varma, Rediff : ...Over the course of its 150 overlong minutes, consciences awaken, romance blossoms, bonafide bums turn desh bhakts and chemistry is challenged like never before. The one between Fukrey's cast, thankfully, is still going strong.... full review

So-So, by Dhaval Roy, Times of India : ...The film will often make you laugh, especially if you are a fan of out-and-out slapstick comedies. But the muddled-up storyline and how the events pan out leave much to be desired. That being said, it’s a decent one-time watch.... full review

Thumbs down, by L L. RAVICHANDER, Deccan Chronicle : ...Fukrey as a franchise is answering the law of diminishing returns. I would rather sit back and watch the first edition on OTT than invest in this mad indulgence which is a misadventure and a cross one at that.... full review

Thumbs down, Glamsham.com : ...From among the cast, for Varun Sharma as Choocha, its half the battle won as he plays the central joker and has others concentrating on his weird plans. Richa Chadha looks too listless in this part adventure, comedy, drama, thriller, and like the rest of the actors, doesn’t really add up.... full review

Thumbs down, by Alaka Sahani, indian express : ...The popular franchise which gave us a sassy, stylish and an intelligent female don should have added more meat to the character in this outing. Her badassery — such as pairing a scorpion-shaped maangtika with bridal wear — held great potential. Instead, the film is more about fukra-panti.... full review

Thumbs down, by Lekha Menon, Khaleej Times : ...The movie is in the hands of seasoned actors but there is not much they can do to elevate average writing. Pankaj Tripathi does well and his deadpan one-liners evoke a chuckle or two. Richa Chadha’s rough and rustic Bholi Punjaban is still a delight but the novelty has worn off. The same goes for the talented Varun Sharma who, as Choocha, gets to carry the bulk of the comedic weight. Manjot Singh and Pulkit Samrat are sincere and it’s evident they have all had a good time shooting for the film.... full review

Thumbs down, by Mayank shekhar, Movie Talkies : ...Timepass—stand-up comedian, Kanan Gill, best describes as a rare Indian English word—that’s both a verb/activity, and the review of that activity! Did I find the movie to be sufficiently ‘timepass’? No, but then—not gonna judge, if you do.... full review

Thumbs down, by Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV : ...Varun Sharma dominates the proceedings, but Choocha's antics have lost their power to raise a chuckle. Eye rolls are all they are likely to get. Pulkit Samrat and Manjot Singh are reduced to glorified bystanders in Fukrey 3. Richa Chadha goes through the motions in a manner of somebody who has had enough of the increasingly repetitious rigmarole. So have we.... full review

Thumbs down, by Divya Raje Bhonsale, NewsBytes : ...A few of the things that could have been better with this movie are its timing, the second half, and the BGM. One thing that I truly missed in Fukrey 3 is Fazal's presence. It's best in the first half, and too long in the second. Yet, it passes as a decent watch.... full review

Thumbs down, Outlook India : ...Tripathy has a lot of fun trying to make the nonsensical look believable for him. A great actor that he is, he walks away with taalis from the audience in many of the scenes.... full review

Thumbs down, by Nandini Ramnath, Scroll.in : ...Scatological humour abounds, much of it mercifully suggested rather than shown, but still icky enough to be off-putting. The 150-minute film, after making us aware of the passage of time, finally emerges from its stupor in the final act. The makers get so confident at their ability to create mayhem that they prepare the way for a fourth Fukrey film. Cut off their supply immediately and flush it down the toilet.... full review

  • Nudity & Sexual content: Bare-chested Pulkit Samrat and Varun Sharma
  • Concept: A group of good-for-nothings try to do good by entering politics.
  • General Look and Feel: The usual slapstick loudness and garishness.
