The trailer itself grabs your attention with three ladies who don’t look like they have any intention of being anywhere except at the center of the stage. Through. The. Film. And it delivers on that promise. So, Crew’s intent of being a woman-centric film is true. Thankfully, that resolve is not superficial. The men in their lives are a part of their lives, but the ladies’ lives don’t revolve around them. In that sense, Crew is as much a trend-breaker as it is a trendsetter. But, yeah, unfortunately, there is a but.

...was given enough time to wonder...

But, Crew doesn’t have the confidence to say only that. It wants to go beyond and in doing that it isn’t able to capitalise on its unique selling point. It wants to talk about the rich versus the not-so-rich. It wants to lament about the woes of the wronged. Which is all good. If only, it was done without short-changing on the writing of the women—their characters, their dialogues, their act.

Yes, their act too. We know Tabu can sleepwalk through any role. So it hurts to see her not get her timing right with her comic one-liners. And if she can’t, then neither can Kareena Kapoor and Kriti Sanon be expected. The sloppy dubbing didn’t help. Anyway, most of the jokes become a circle of one person being off with their dialogue delivery, just a fraction of a second late maybe, and the rest following their lead. Do they look gorgeous? Yes, and also when do they not? Have they given better performances? Yes. Full stop.

The blame lies as much on the writers as it does on the direction. The banter is cute, and would have passed too were it delivered well. But none of the lines are beyond the wittiness of what my friends and I would exchange. Okay, except for the ‘time machine’ one which we see in the trailer already. That was well written and well executed too. Unfortunately, there is nothing extraordinary about the context. If at all, it is a little out of place given where in the film it happens. Not to mention, the characters are quite similar once you go past the skin level. An opportunity lost.

This can be said about the entire film too. It certainly doesn’t continue what the film starts with, an attempt to connect with the air traveler in you and your common-yet-amusing experiences at an airport or when on a flight. It tries to create sympathy towards airline staff but becomes repetitive with the complaints losing its audience. And you are given enough time to wonder how this entire crew always flies together. Not reality from what I hear.

This thought came to me after I mulled over for a long time on how misunderstood the definition of ‘middle class’ is. None of the characters in the film belong to the actual middle class, not even the lady being tipped by Jasmine (Kareena Kapoor).

So yeah, a lot of time spent in a reasonably short run-time of 125 minutes thinking about the externalities. Gratitude where it’s due, I am thankful that the film revolves around three women. And yet cannot stop wishing my mind wasn’t allowed to wander and wonder.

Thumbs up, by Shivani Pawaskar, Bollywood Life : ...Crew movie is fun and glamorously entertaining. Tabu, Kareena and Kriti don't just steal gold but also hearts in this one. Take your crew along with you and watch this light-hearted heist comedy.... full review

Thumbs up, by Abhimanyu Mathur, DNA : ...Hats off to director Rajesh Krishnan for making a film that takes you back years – to a simple time when bad could be good without moral justification, when stories were allowed to be simple, and when comedies need not be ‘clever’. How he manages to do this in the post-OTT era with such finesse is commendable. Our industry and audience need more films like Crew.... full review

Thumbs up, by Devesh Sharma, Filmfare : ...Watch the film for the barrelful of laughs it provides and for its powerful message in praise of female friendships. As also for the acting chops displayed by Tabu, Kareena Kapoor, and Kriti Sanon.... full review

Thumbs up, by Murtuza Iqbal, Filmi Beat : ...Talking about performances, it is Kareena Kapoor Khan who steals the show. She is looking gorgeous in the movie and has performed very well. From comedy scenes to emotional scenes, Kareena has nailed it. After Kareena, it is of course, Tabu who grabs our attention. As we said earlier, she has been given some of the best one-liners, and she just once again proves why we call her one of the best actresses of the Indian cinema. Thumbs up, by Anuj Kumar, FirstPost : ...On the whole , Crew is an entertaining and delectable film with hard realities of being a middle-class in India when you have to show to the world that all is fine, when in reality everything around you is falling apart. It is indeed an art to deliver a serious message with a hilarious tone.... full review

Thumbs up, by Baradwaj Rangan, galatta.com : ...The character Tabu plays (her name is Geeta) is shown to be resolutely middle-class, and she gets some amazing zingers. My favourite is the one when she refuses to leave a very expensive cup of coffee. She says, “Sau dollar ki coffee mangvaai hai. Jhaag bhi peeke jaaoongi.” Diljit Dosanjh turns on the charm in a nice little role where he’s smitten by the Kriti Sanon character. Every time he calls her “Divya Rana from Haryana”, you wonder why he isn’t more of a leading man in Hindi films. Rajesh Sharma squirms marvellously as the target of our heroines. (Why don’t we see more of him?) By the last half-hour, the film really gets going, and if it’s not exactly Ocean’s Eleven, I was satisfied with the Ocean’s Five-and-a-half I got.... full review

Thumbs up, by Monika Rawal Kukreja, Hindustan Times : ...In a nutshell, Crew makes you laugh, and have fun while serving some cheesy and cocky humour, and manages to stay afloat despite a lot of turbulence, all thanks to the threesome that you wish lasted a little longer.... full review

Thumbs up, by Zinia Bandyopadhyay, india today : ...The writing, by Nidhi Mehra and Mehul Suri, is crisp and keeps the pace steady throughout the film. It very beautifully covers up the few loopholes here and there. The build-up in the first half is good, but the second half is where it gets better.... full review

Thumbs up, by Pooja Darade, koimoi : ...Overall, Crew is a riveting and enjoyable heist comedy and takes you on a journey filled with laughter. Much like the smooth landing of flights in the film, the jokes land gracefully, keeping you hooked from start to end. Tabu, Kareena, and Kriti shine with their remarkable performances and entertain you with playful chemistry. You’ll cheer for them after all; our girls just want to have fun!... full review

Thumbs up, by TITAS CHOWDHURY, News18.com : ...Crew might not have reached the destination that it had set out for. It’s definitely not Kareena, Tabu or Kriti’s best work. Nonetheless, it’s a great attempt at being a cookie-cutter. Give it a chance because it celebrates female friendships and despite the troughs and the crests, they fiercely love, protect and support one another, and we don’t get to see these themes in our films too often.... full review

Thumbs up, by Garima Das, Outlook India : ...Songs which serve as a life to any Bollywood movie, are quite peppy. Tracks like 'Ghagra' and 'Choli' have already become music lovers' favourite. The recreated version of 'Sona Kitna Sona Hai' is also catchy. The visuals in these songs make it watchable in the big screens.... full review

Thumbs up, by Divya Nair, Rediff : ...Overall, Crew may fall short of a few elements to be declared a blockbuster but kudos to the makers for putting the pun, I mean fun, in the right place. This is an enjoyable flight you can watch without any seatbelts.... full review

Thumbs up, by Nandini Ramnath, Scroll.in : ...Some of the 125-minute movie’s zingers and hilarious scenes simply whoosh by. Having grabbed us with the casting, and having done justice to its themes, Crew is sometimes in too much of a rush to reach its destination. Yet, Krishnan ensures that his heroines – smart without being smug, self-centred but sensitive too, always looking out for each other as women tend to – won’t be forgotten in a hurry.... full review

Thumbs up, by Toshiro Agarwal, Times Now : ...Rajesh A Krishnan has done a commendable job at hitting the right spot that is sure to strike a chord with the audience, especially due to the film’s real-life inspirations cherrypicked from a rather dark phase of the Indian aviation industry.... full review

Thumbs up, by Renuka Vyavahare, Times of India : ...If you are looking for some light-hearted madcap comedy, Crew is worth diving into -- with all its frivolity, humour and glam.... full review

So-So, by Subhash K Jha, Bolly Spice : ...Crew is filled with debt-defying potshots at economic absconders and other financial defaulters. But why are Maharastrian women with a certain body-type and speech pattern always cast as househelp and cops? Here it is Trupti Khamkar as a customs officer who gets laughs for the way she looks and talks.... full review

So-So, by Deepanjana Pal, Film Companion : ...If Crew had just been able to show a truly authentic female friendship, it wouldn’t need anything else to justify itself. That’s it. The fact of a female friendship, covering everything from resistance to conflict to wish fulfilment, that’s the message.... full review

So-So, by Vijayalakshmi Narayanan, Free Press Journal : ...Despite its turbulences, Crew doesn’t crash land as you’re left largely entertained by actresses who are unwaveringly dazzling (major props to the styling department) and are having a ball, on-screen. But, to be fair, it would be appreciated if better written material is offered for more films to be fronted by women. Because, Tabu, Kareena and Kriti have already proven their capability to lead films in the past, with elan.... full review

So-So, by Sakshi Verma, India TV : ...Crew has some good music and some failed ones. Ghagra and Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai are perfectly placed in the film. These songs also add up to the story and you wouldn't feel board. However, the intro and sad song didn't work for me. Raj Ranjodh could have done better with these though. Naina sung by Diljit, obviously comes with the end credits and adds nothing to the story of this film. Overall, Crew has good party songs and you can hear them playing in parties now.... full review

So-So, by Rishil Jogani, Pinkvilla : ...Crew heavily relies upon it's three leading ladies and the ladies rise up to the occasion too. However, the lack of spice, flavour and sharpness in the story makes Crew just another run-of-the-mill entertainer while it could have been much, much more. Crew now plays at a theatre near you now. Go book your tickets and enjoy the ride Kareena Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Tabu take you on.... full review

So-So, by Ankit ojha, The National News : ...Crew is an easy, breezy film. Sure, it’s not the perfect movie – the humour doesn’t always work and the heist is very basic, but it is still a fun watch. The three protagonists are likeable, and the motive behind their quirky criminal escapades make this film worth watching on the big screen.... full review

Thumbs down, by Asra Mavad, Deccan Herald : ...There are multiple points in the movie where you get your hopes up, hoping for ‘Crew’ to take off, only for it to run out of fuel soon enough. The predictable script and weak narrative make sure the movie Read more at: https://www.deccanherald.com/entertainment/crew-movie-review-a-comedy-that-fails-to-reach-its-potential-2958108... full review

Thumbs down, by Nitin Jain, Glamsham.com : ...Overall, a trip to a nearby mall doing window shopping could be money well spent instead of being seated for a shade over two hours watching stupidity unfolding in the name of a heist comedy.... full review

Thumbs down, by Mayank Shekhar, MiD DAY : ...The film gets on a flight of imagination so ludicrous, without a bandwidth for it, that I felt like heading off the exit, at some point. Either way, hope this lands well for you. Not my scene, gonna crash now.... full review

Thumbs down, by Sameer Ahire, Movie Talkies : ...Crew is a little screwed—actually very much screwed—in the second half, but there are some scenes that give you a little pleasure of new-age female-driven comedy. The rest of the show is strictly below average, and no oxygen mask can save you from that.... full review

Thumbs down, by Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV : ...Crew is a flight that never reaches cruising altitude. It runs low on fuel precisely when it is time to get off the ground. Stuck on a narrative tarmac strewn with predictable inanities, the film is undoubtedly pretty to behold thanks to all the glamour and sass that the three lead actresses bring to the table. But all the beauty that we see on the screen is only skin-deep.... full review

Never wanted to watch, but am pleased and surprised the young (especially) girl crowds at Mall theaters are enjoying it.
