Anjaana Anjaani - Notepad

Anjaana Anjaani

wogma rating: Add to 'must watch' list (?)
quick review: Every syllable of the one-line plot is as common as it can get. After all, you can say "boy meets girl" only in so many different ways. Despite that when you have fun; and you care for the boy and the girl; you know you are watching a brilliant film. And since the means are good, the time it takes to get to the yawn-inducing approach to the end and the end itself doesn't hurt that bad. A bit, yes.

This page has additional observations, other than the ones noted in the main review.

Warning: this section has some details that could distort your experience while watching the movie. I strongly recommend reading this only after you have seen the movie or if you have decided not to see it.

Plot Summary

Boy, Aakash meets girl, Kiara. They both want to commit suicide. But, fate wants them to wait. They wait together.

What Worked

  • Priyanka Chopra's opening scene. Must be one of the best 'drunk' scenes ever.
  • The set-up that sets the tone for the rest of the film.
  • Xmas and new year's week is captured beautifully.
  • The very obvious post-production work done with the visuals, especially the tints used.
  • There was actually well-meaning applause at interval.
  • Tight close-ups of eyes and hands.

What did not

Note: This section simply lists the things that I did not like in this movie. This is not the overall impression about this movie. Please read the full review here

  • The opening sequence. Just couldn't handle the thought of having "wall street" déjà vu. The tension of having to watch another film spoiling it all was unbearable.
  • The hospital scenes.
  • The world's bucket list inspires our lead pair to make their list.
  • The superhero fancy-dress song.
  • Isn't travel by Grayhound more expensive than taking a flight?
  • The way two adults refer to sex. "nothing happened between us" something very childish about this statement.

Abhishek Bhardwaj:

I guess this all you could get so early as a review.
Anyways nice site.

Vishal:

I think plot of Robot made more sense than Anjana Anjani 's . BTW what this movie was about ? I am sure this time even other reviews will be similar to WOGMAs as there is no story to give away.

meetu:

@Vishal to each his own dude, is all I can say.

ali:

i agree with Abhishek Bhardwaj

thx for this nice site

Makarand:

Not impressed. Very banal movie. There was a spark when i felt that the ending was going to be different from the one I imagined at the start. Alas. not to be.. I did not find any single spark.. The usual Bollywood 'sensitivity' to physical relations also came out and against the 'run of play' Akash claims ke 'hamare beech kuch nahin hua' BS...

Indian Devil:

Couldn't disagree with you more. The entire movie was a sham and was anything but crisp. The film tried hard to be funny and romantic but failed on both accounts. The audience in the theatre were getting restless and wanted the movie to end. I have my own take on this movie on my blog(which no one reads). http://devilishmonk.wordpress.com

naintara:

i dont see the movie but its song tujhe bhula diya is really nice

meetu:

@Indian Devil the banter between the two was pretty crisp, especially in Kiara's first appearance.

Shekhar:

Dabaang was better. Except the song "bhula diya" rest is waste of time.

Shekhar:

Except the song "bhula diya" rest is waste of time. Even Dabaang was better than this one.

Puneet Garg:

anjaana anjaani is a very nicely made movie which always leave an everlasting impression on one who watches it....i'm fascinated by this movie a lot and its my best movie i have ever watched......especially i was deeply touched by the acting of priyanka & ranbir in this movie....they both have performed very nicely and smoothly according to the situations in the movie.....so i suggest everybody to watch this movie.....

Kalyan:

Let me guess what happened. Someone told you some awesome news just before you saw this movie and you were very happy! There could be no other explanation for anyone liking this movie!! Pathetic script. Boring PJs. Stale ending. If I ever feel like committing suicide, I will watch this again.

meetu:

@Kalyan ha ha ha ha! good one! I genuinely liked many parts of the film, man!

ryan:

Piggy Chops does it again.... I really loved Anjaana Anjaani... It is fun, full of froth and glamour... The music is the real soul of the film. Performance, bemisaal hain... love it
My rating: 4.5 / 5

JJ:

boring to the core

Mansi:

Anjaana Anjaani revolves around two characters, as alike as chalk and cheese, (headed for a common end). At 20-something, Akash and Kiara know life's a bitch and are ready to pull the plug on it. Their reasons, however, (for Akash, it's huge debt, for Kiara it's a failed relationship) are as lame as their attempts. (And quite expectedly), the irrational beings put off the idea for a while.
They, meanwhile, decide to live their last wishes. That's really where some fun begins. Akash, who hasn't 'done' it yet, doesn't want to die a virgin. And Kiara harbours whims of swimming in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
Las Vegas is next. Ranbir steals the show there with his happy 'n' gay moves on I'm a Disco Dancer (he's sung it too) in a gay club.

Priyanka is a charmer all the way. She is spontaneous, she is natural and fits best as Kiara.

The film is drab in parts, borrowed from our very own Bollywood. The scenes between Kiara and ex flame Zayed are as boring as watching paint dry. But that doesn't take away from Akash and Kiara's crazy (and fun!) raps. Music (courtesy: Vishal-Shekar) is another USP of the film. Keeps you going in rain or shine ;) Hairat by Lucky Ali & tujhe bhula diya by Mohit Chauhan and Shruti Pathak are amazing tracks.
The film recevied a pretty tepid response at the box office. But, Bollywood fanboys sure wudnt have missed it!
