Sunday - Notepad
Sunday
quick review:
Given the humor, Sunday could have done so much better if an elegant approach was used. Instead we have a loud, garish product. A few good laughs
Make it a lazy Sunday watch, if at all.
This page has additional observations, other than the ones noted in the main review.
Plot Summary
A woman is murdered. We don't know who did it. In another thread Seher (Ayesha Takia) is being chased by people she has never met. Everything is a mystery. See how the two threads meet and what a Sunday has to do with it in Sunday.
What Worked
- The visuals of the song being played during the opening credits - very stylish.
What did not
Note: This section simply lists the things that I did not like in this movie. This
is not the overall impression about this movie. Please read the
full review here
- At 3AM, why is the street so crowded and people dressed as if there is a fancy dress competition going on?
- There is one scene in a car where the cuts in the supposedly continuous shot are obvious.
- Why are autumn leaves falling on 20 people who are fighting each other!?
Nitty-Gritty
This section lists things that I think are not important to the overall impact of the movie. In most cases, it could be explained away by something like, "we noticed the glitch after the scene was shot and there were schedule/budget issues and thus we could not re-shoot it". I like giving the makers the benefit of doubt, but I am amused nevertheless. Hopefully, they will tickle you too.
- How come a crowded Chandni Chowk makes way for cop-drug dealer chase?
- Isn't it amazing how Arshad Waarsi's character can race even though he has been recently hit by a bullet on his butt?
- I would like to know what movie was running houseful on a Monday morning.

[...] Meetu expected much more from the movie and wonder’s “subtlety - whither art thou?” Sunday could have been so much more had it been a little less zealous about showing itself off - by misusing the music, giving the colors an extra-shine, and the overall video-album like tone of the movie. I've been looking for a good, unbiased review of this movie and I found it here. Thanks, Meetu! If I manage to catch 'Sunday' this Sunday, we can discuss it later in the week! :-D
much like bhool bhulaiya this genre mixing doesnt seem to work. i was afraid they would bring in action too..what with the cars blowing up and all.
the acting was pretty good, some of the scene transitions were very nice and the delhi monuments were well shot. the background score was way too loud, the songs unnecessary and the juvenile gay jokes avoidable.
you should put a "could-have -been-better" in your rating scale.
So, did you catch it over the weekend, Ideasmith?
Chugs, the blowing up did make it action...and don't forget the autumn-leaf-fight-scene! "could have been better" - so tempted to add one under each rating, so i can have a nine-point scale!
Meetu: Nope, didn't manage it. And this weekend and the next and any time in between are reserved for the Kala Ghoda Art Festival. :-p I guess I missed a Sunday after all!
Oh, you have so many better things to do, then! How does a missing Sunday matter?
Hi
I watched 20 mins of this movie just yesterday and realised it is a remake of a recent Telugu hit movie called 'Anukokunda Oka Roju'. Dunno if there are any Telugus out there reading this but hopefully you figured it out already. And by the way I stoppped after 20 mins because I was almost guaranteed it wouldn't be as good. An oversight may be - but why should I waste another 2 hours to watch something that I have already watched - only in a better form.
The Telugu original was very well made without 'frills' and a very 'close to reality' type of approach. Sunday failed in that department. One example - when Arshad Warsi is stopped by the cops and has to get all his passengers out of the car - it appeared like more than half of them were whites! I haven't ever met a white who would fancy being crammed with 20 others into a car the size of a European small car. In the Telugu version though, the same scene is done with 20 very naive villagers who were visiting Hyderabad and you know what - that is not far from reality. I don't see the need to go overboard just to make a film look like the filmaker's definition of 'entertainment'.
Nirmal, I can actually imagine foreign backpackers cramming in to save on money. I personally know a couple people from UK who have travelled on top of buses!
But yet, I know what you mean. Even if this one can be argued out, there are surely many more which cannot be. Thanks for taking the time to have this discussion.
Hi Meetu
Fair enough - I do agree there are thousands of backpackers who wouldn't mind travelling on top of a bus and ofcourse like you said - that is arguable!
Unfortunately I haven't watched enough of the movie to talk about any of its other highs and lows apart from that awfully funny 'nun' type of gown that Ayesha wears to the pub.. The less popular friend of hers (in the movie) seems to have a better sense of dressing.
Keep doing the good job that you always do.
Rgds
