Roy - External Reviews

wogma rating: Watch if you have nothing better to do (?)
quick review:

A romantic rumination trying to be sold as a thriller it is not. Interesting but not enough. Lots of philosophy but towards no tangible direction.

So-So by Naresh Kumar Deoshi, Apun Ka Choice ...Vikramjit Singh is clearly not a votary of melodrama and prefers to dabble on the undercurrents that play out between the layers of a story. The characters in Roy remain by and large muted. It’s a strange, slow, somnolent film that will be liked by only a few with an acquired taste. ... full review

So-So by Nupur Barua, ...In fact, you may find yourself concentrating more on the scenery than on the dialogues. The songs are mostly average, though a couple of them are now popular. The editing is effective, but it does not seem like that, especially when you find yourself watching countless sequences in which nothing much happens. It is a lengthy movie, and you may find your attention wavering.... full review

So-So by Joginder Tuteja, Movie Talkies ...Overall, if only the 'film within a film' format would have been fleshed out better with characters given much more meat to chew on, this good looking film could just have introduced a new storytelling style for a larger audience. ... full review

So-So by Sonia Chopra, Sify Movies ...And so the viewer is often lost in a labyrinth, which is interesting for a while, and onerous thereafter. Despite these flaws, the film is still enjoyable in sporadic bursts for the immersing story, an unconventional lead cast, and the visual flair.... full review

So-So by Madhureeta Mukherjee, Times of India ...Roy' has its moments, but the story is like a blotch of painting on abstract art.... full review

So-So by Subhash K Jha, yahoo! India ...Somewhere long before the debutant director Vikramjit Singh's tormented characters find their nemesis, the beauteous Jacqueline Fernandez playing an avant-garde filmmaker tells Arjun Rampal(playing a hatted, smoke-shrouded bratty masala filmmaker) that when a story doesn't seem to be getting anywhere, it's better to end it then and there.... full review

Thumbs down by Anna MM Vetticad, annavetticadgoes2themovies ...Perhaps Ranbir too felt he had been taken for granted. I can think of no other reason why the opening credits over-compensated for the neglect of his character by saying: “Ranbir Kapoor In A Very Dynamic Role.” Huh?... full review

Thumbs down by bobby Sing, Bobby Talks ...The young student might have said that in good fun, but the remark sadly sums up the present sad scenario of the so called ‘Crores Clubs’ just perfectly. And after reading these honest comments of the younger brigade if you still can find the courage to watch this debacle called ROY that should ideally be referred as “Jo Dekhe Woh ROYe”then all I can say is All The Best and nothing else.... full review

Thumbs down by Kiran Kaur, Bollywood Life ...If you have an appetite for a slow-paced love story with philosophy, you’re probably going to like it but if, like me, you go in for some action to unfold, you’ll be extremely disappointed.... full review

Thumbs down by Suparna Sharma, Deccan Chronicle ...Arjun Rampal is channelling his inner angsty hippie here. He gets the slumped demeanour right. The stubble and even the dandruff-hair work. But all’s lost in that exquisite but stony face. Is something the matter with Ranbir Kapoor? First hyper-stupidity in Besharam and now sleep-walking through this cuckoo? Should we worry about Bombay Velvet? Fernandez is, well, easy on the eye and charming. Now for some acting and diction lessons, please.... full review

Thumbs down by Rachit Gupta, Filmfare ...Director Vikramjit Singh’s ambitious first film had the potential but end of the day it turns into a tiresome affair. A tad too indulgent and too contrived. ... full review

Thumbs down by Piyasree Desgupta, FirstPost ...It's difficult to pick what is Roy's greatest achievements. But somewhere near the top of the list is the fact that director Vikramjit Singh has managed to make a film that has two of Bollywood's most goodlooking heroes, and leave a woman stalking random people's honeymoon pictures on Facebook mobile. To quote Kapoor in Roy, "Yeh kahani aisay khatam hogi, mein nahin janta tha."... full review

Thumbs down by Johnson Thomas, Free Press Journal ...The film is beautifully shot but there’s really no purpose to that unless it’s to make an incredibly beautiful country look even more so. The songs are peppy, folksy and soulful but don’t fit in with the narrative. Jacqueline looks beautiful but her dialogue delivery and acting credentials continue to be suspect. Ranbir Kapoor is a little too sober and low-key to be able to keep his fan-base contended while Arjun Ramphal, looking soulful and intense, seems a bit lost in this entirely puerile exercise. Above all, there is nothing much to the script other than parallel plotlines tentatively feeding off each other through random musings and bizarre wordplay – and that’s not a pretty sight mind you! ... full review

Thumbs down by Anupama Chopra, Hindustan Times ...Vikramjit strains to create a moody, artistic angst. But it’s impossible to take any of it seriously. The film’s credits read: Ranbir Kapoor in a dynamic role. Even an actor as exciting as him doesn’t possess the dynamism to lift this train-wreck.... full review

Thumbs down by Rajeev Masand, IBN Live ...I'm going with one out of five for Roy. The unintentionally funny dialogues aside, it's unlikely that you'll be smiling through this misery.... full review

Thumbs down by Arunava Chatterjee, india today ...Roy is unnecessarily lengthy and boring, you shouldn't get surprised if you find a person or two yawning or leaving the theatre with a frown on their face.... full review

Thumbs down by Shubhra Gupta, indian express ...So here are my questions. Who wrote this? Who is it for? The mystery and the enigma, which are set up lazily and obviously, never really take root. I haven’t seen something as fuzzy and dreary as ‘Roy’ in a long time : just what is Ranbir Kapoor doing in a movie like this?... full review

Thumbs down Indicine ...Roy has a good premise, a good idea, a good vision but the director is not able to live up to his own vision as a director. Roy is too intelligent for itself and ends up being a boring, confused film with a convoluted plot that is neither a good thriller nor a good love story. You can watch the film for the music videos and the gorgeous cinematography because otherwise it is too much of a slog to survive the duration of the film.... full review

Thumbs down by Surabhi Redkar, koimoi ...Roy is a twisted love story that has a thriller coating. It is a non-purpose film which gives nothing but just tells a story that is multi-layered to create intrigue. It is a confused plot which is enthused with style. In the film there is a dialogue which says “Ye film kaise ban gayi” and I quite agreed with that! I am going with a 2/5 for this film.... full review

Thumbs down by Udita Jhunjhunwala, Live Mint ...While Rampal and Fernandez stir up a modicum of chemistry, the scenes between Fernandez and Kapoor are icy, which is saying something considering that Kapoor has enough charm to win over a lamp post. But as Roy, even he seems restricted to picking from a handful of expressions. Both of Fernandez’s characters are too alike—brooding, weighed down and over-costumed.... full review

Thumbs down by Divya Solgama, MoviezADDA ...Dum? Well, except for fantastic songs, beautifully looking Jacqueline, picturesque location, there is nothing more in this boring film. 'Roy' joins the long list of all those films where superstars are added as a saving grace. In short, if you are looking out for some good amount of joy in the movie 'Roy', then let me sum it up by saying there is very less of joy and has more of cloy in the movie 'Roy'.... full review

Thumbs down by Sukanya Verma, Rediff ...Roy is so tangled in its inflated, erratic ideas of a pseudo mystery around parallel lives and loves that it ceases to make sense even before it takes off. Mostly, though, it's just slow torture.... full review

Thumbs down by SUDHISH KAMATH, The Hindu ...With ponderings about shooting without a script and letting the location dictate the story and exchanges with a producer who believes that his project is doomed, Roy feels like an expensive meta experiment in trying to see if Bollywood A-listers would really sign up to do a film without a script if they are paid big bucks for it. They would.... full review

Thumbs down by Anindita Dev, ZEENEWS.COM ...Roy` does have quintessential element of a Bollywood story - betrayal, love, conspiracy, emotion – but it fails to come out.
