Margarita With A Straw - External Reviews

wogma rating: Add to 'must watch' list (?)
quick review:

Touching upon a lot of intense topics, Margarita With A Straw gets you up and listening about all of them through a tale about a “different” person. But it doesn't necessarily get you engaged through and through.

Thumbs up by anna MM Vetticad, annavetticadgoes2themovies ...These glitches notwithstanding, Margarita With A Straw is a beautiful film.... full review

So-So Bollywood Hungama ...On the whole, MARGARITA WITH A STRAW is decent film but it will struggle at the box-office as it caters to a very niche segment of the audience.... full review

Thumbs up Bollywood Life ...I admit I had more expectations from MWAS, especially after the glowing reviews it had received from almost everyone in Bollywood. But that shouldn’t stop me from recommending this movie as a definite must-watch this weekend. After all, don’t we always complain about the lack of quality films in Bollywood? Margarita…may not be a masterpiece, but it certainly has its straw…sorry, heart in its right place!... full review

Thumbs up by Tanaya Ramyani, BookmyShow ...Shonali Bose’s Margarita With a straw is a rare feat. It is rich in all aspects. There is humor, emotion and tension. She perfectly blends all the ingredients and gives us a delightfully fresh film. This Margarita is perfect for your weekend.... full review

So-So by Suparna Sharma, Deccan Chronicle ...Kalki Koechlin is not entirely convincing, but she is charming, adorable and we want to be with her. In the parts where the film works, it’s more because of her effort than the director’s. She stays in character as much as she can, till the director decides to send her on a drink, smile, love journey. She deserved a better second half, as did we.... full review

Thumbs up by Kusumita Das, Deccan Chronicle ...When a film that has a disabled character at its centre, calls itself Margarita With A Straw (and not Chhoone Chali Aasman, as suggested by Taare Zameen Pe’s Aamir Khan), you know nothing regular is coming your way. This cocktail is a must-try. And you might just ask for a repeat.... full review

Thumbs up by Divay Agarwal, Desi Martini ...MWAS is not a film on one’s disability, but a journey of finding love and celebrating life! Top-notch performances.... full review

Thumbs up by Smita Vyas Kumar, Desi Martini ...An honest film on a young woman's journey to self discovery. She also happens to have cerebral palsy. Do not miss this one!... full review

Thumbs up by Krish Sripada, Desi Martini ...Witty, poignant and involved. Meanders a bit conveniently, but that should take nothing away from a good movie!... full review

Thumbs up by Aneela Zeb Babar, Desi Martini ...Happy Hours Are Here Again... full review

Thumbs up by Parampara Patil Hashmi, Desi Martini ...Kalki Koechlin will leave you stunned with her performance! Self discovery truly is about moving beyond doubt and judgement.... full review

Thumbs up by Sreeju Sudhakaran, DNA ...I admit I had more expectations from MWAS, especially after the glowing reviews it had received from almost everyone in Bollywood. But that shouldn’t stop me from recommending this movie as a definite must-watch this weekend. After all, don’t we always complain about the lack of quality films in Bollywood? Margarita…may not be a masterpiece, but it certainly has its straw…sorry, heart in its right place!... full review

So-So by Devesh Sharma, Filmfare ...A little more effort would have turned Margarita With A Straw it into a wonderful film but despite the flaws, it’s surely an attempt in the right direction...... full review

Thumbs up by Tanul Thakur, FirstPost ...Still, the most notable triumph of Margarita, With a Straw is that it keeps asking disconcerting questions of its characters and us, without spelling out the answers. A good film respects its audience. A better film respects its audience as well as its characters. Margarita, With A Straw, for most part, is a better film.... full review

So-So by Johnson Thomas, Free Press Journal ... In fact, in most of the scenes featuring Kalki emoting , the focus is largely on her face and eyes – as though telling us that there is much more to a disabled person than mere motor dysfunction. The coming-of-age elements are a bit formulaic no doubt but the lack of overt sentimentality in the depiction and the evocative performances make the experience richer. Shonali Bose and Nilesh Maniyar manage to put-together a series of evolved moments that educate and inform. The personal inputs from Shonali’s sister’s struggle makes the effort much more poignant and elevating. Unfortunately the overall effort stops short of being completely cinematic.... full review

So-So by Nupur Barua, fullhyd.com ...Margarita With A Straw can be summed up in one phrase - check out Kalki Koechlin. This has to be the role of a lifetime for her, and she has never been so endearing. Shonali Bose tries to bring to our notice an important element of society - the differently-abled community - but she does not make it too indulgent as far as sympathy is concerned. Definitely worth one watch, but only if you have the patience.... full review

Thumbs down by Martin D'Souza, Glamsham.com ...But this is not a normal film, it is a special film highlighting Special Children who are differently-abled and they deserved better.... full review

Thumbs up by Anupama Chopra, Hindustan Times ...Neither does Kalki’s performance. She is absolutely heart-breaking and staggeringly lovely. Watch her in the little moments - the way her face crumples when a boy she likes doesn’t reciprocate or when Khanum’s sensuous touching makes her awkward.... full review

Thumbs up by Sweta Kaushal, Hindustan Times ...The one-hour-forty-minute-long movie, however, does distract the audience at times. There are sequences which appear rather disconnected. The first one hour of the film is engaging, but beyond a point, Margarita With A Straw appears badly chopped. There are a few random sequences that don't actually add up to anything in the narrative at all.... full review

Thumbs up by Rajeev Masand, IBN Live ...Don't miss the film, or you'll miss what is likely one of the year's strongest performances by a female actor.... full review

Thumbs up by Ananya Bhattacharya, india today ...This is a story that we needed to watch. Oh, and it will make you shed copious amounts of tears, so make sure you don't run out of tissues. This weekend, ditch a margarita in the pub and treat yourself to the one in the theatre... full review

Thumbs up by Surabhi Redkar, koimoi ...Margarita With A Straw is purely an emotional, slice of life film that will draw you with its simplicity. This is Kalki Koechlin’s best performance, watch it for her. ... full review

Thumbs up by Shubha Shetty-Saha, MiD DAY ...The star cast is pretty good. A special mention has to be made of the ever dependable Revathi, who yet again delivers a convincing act. But of course, it is Kalki who takes your breath away with a superlative performance. Undoubtedly with one of the finest performances in recent years, Kalki lives and breathes Laila with such amazing ease and conviction that she stays in your head for a long time after you have left the theatre.... full review

Thumbs up by Jaidev Hemmady, Movie Talkies ...The film's greatness lies in its simplicity and honesty and also because it does not preach or make a martyr out of the disabled protagonist. If you are tired of watching the same old genres every weekend and are looking for something different, Margarita With A Straw is your cup of tea…or shall we say a glass of Margarita?... full review

Thumbs up by Divya Solgama, MoviezADDA ...Dum?? Well, this movie is a must watch for all those who love sensible cinema and can appreciate fine performances as, Kalki raises the benchmark of Hindi film actresses with the help of her flawless performance. Though, the regular entertaining film lovers will shy away from this product and might find it too arty or slow as per their taste and sensibilities. On an overall basis, 'Margarita with a straw' is an intoxicating blend of ace performance & heartfelt moments, which deserves to be cherished with every sip of it.... full review

Thumbs up by Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV ...Do not pass up a sip of Margarita, With A Straw. It could be life-altering. If nothing else, it will soak you with its warmth.... full review

So-So by Namrata Joshi, Outlook India ...Early on in the film, protagonist Laila (Kalki) shows her middle finger to the judges of a competition in which a song written and composed by her is given an award not because of its worth but because she happens to be differently abled. Her defiance sets a heart-warming tone... full review

Thumbs up by Paloma Sharma., Rediff ...Although certain scenes in the film could have been infinitely more powerful had the background score been stronger, one must laud Bose's use of deafening silence and Laila's wails in a scene at the hospital towards the end of the film.... full review

Thumbs up by Sonia Chopra, Sify Movies ...But one still recommends the film wholeheartedly! How often in Bollywood do you see a differently-abled bisexual heroine, one who gets to have her own share of flaws, her romantic adventures, and her journey towards self-actualization? This margarita is intoxicating stuff, even if with a straw!... full review

Thumbs up by Somdatta Sen, Star Blockbuster ...Don’t let this sip pass…enjoy the Margarita.... full review

Thumbs up by VENKY VEMBU, The Hindu ...Margarita narrates a moving, endearing rite-of-passage story of a ‘disabled’ young woman who embraces life in its entirety. As Laila, Kalki will make you laugh sillily — and also cry buckets. But not tears of pity or sorrow, just the joy of falling in love with a beautiful mind in a disobedient body.... full review

Thumbs up by ANUJ KUMAR, The Hindu ...Bottomline: Stirred well, Maragarita leaves a heady feeling.... full review

Thumbs up by Srijana Mitra Das, Times of India ...The script somewhat over-diligently ticks every possible 'challenge' box, mixed marriages to a Pakistani-Bangladeshi visually affected lesbian. But that small quibble aside, MWAS is deeply moving, a philosophical film which makes you wonder if the body is a palace or prison - and evokes mothers to lovers who've cherished your soul. Try this Margarita - it's different.... full review

So-So by Karan Bali, Upper Stall ...Margarita With a Straw has its heart in the right place and does have its share of moments. It also benefits greatly from a really good central act by its leading lady. But finally, the film does leave you wanting that something more after its running time is over.... full review

Thumbs up by Subhash K Jha, ZEENEWS.COM ...Kalki made me forget Laila is damaged. She left me confused about the definitions of the normal.... full review
