Main Aur Mrs Khanna

wogma rating: Watch when on TV (?)
quick review: The promos of Main aur Mrs. Khanna are quite misleading as they would have you believe that this movie is a Salman Khan movie. For all the Salman Khan fans out there, THIS IS NOT A SALMAN KHAN MOVIE. But if you want to see him anyway, go right ahead and watch it. Watch out for Bappi Lahiri.

TimELiebe:

Mr. Kaul, while I don't share your fondness for Salman Khan (sorry), I otherwise pretty much completely agree with your review. It was one of the first Bollywood movies my fellow Ameican friends and I had seen, and we weren't sure if it made no sense because of some cultural difference we weren't picking up on, or what. Kareena Kapoor seemed far too stylish and self-possessed for what was suppossed to be a barely-adult orphan girl, and Mr. Khan just looked way too old for her.

Maybe I liked Sohail Khan a bit more than you did in this part - he sort of reminded me of Uday Chopra's Ali in the DHOOM series, who I've always had a soft spot for. Since we didn't know back then that Sohail is Salman Khan's kid brother, some of the later scenes between the two of them just seemed weird to us - now it's clear the paternal vibe Salman instantly has with Sohail is a older brother-younger brother thing.

I'm sure that the end of this movie was supposed to have us glad Ms. Kapoor and Mr. Salman Khan fly off together - but to us it was like "Why? Why? Why? He abandons his wife in the Melbourne airport to 'find his luck' or something, and at least the herky-jerky con artist guy tries to take care of her, even offering to marry her so she won't get deported. Why doesn't she stay with him instead?" Again, I'm not sure if it's bad writing or a cultural difference - but it made this movie one of our least favorite Bollywood films.

meetu:

Sorry @TimELiebe Akashi doesn't write for wogma any more and it's difficult to trace her down. I haven't seen the film, so I can't comment either.

TimELiebe:

Not a problem, meetu - I was just trying not to offend her about my feelings regarding Salman Khan, is all.

I agreed w/her review in the main - and to be honest, I don't think it'd be fair to subject anybody else to seeing that film just to satisfy my "Western fan" curiosity, as Ms. Kaul makes it clear it's not a very good movie for anyone.
