wogma rating: The keen should rent; else TV (?)
quick review:

What's done well is done pretty neatly, what's not is pretty average, even mediocre. And yet, the entire set-up kind-a, sort-a works.

Thumbs up by Subhash K.Jha, Bolly Spice ...Come to think of it, Rock On 2 is pretty much the most engaging and authentic sequel I’ve seen coming out of Bollywood in recent times. If as Shakespeare volunteered, music is actually the food of love, then this film is a feast. ... full review

Thumbs down Bollywood Hungama ...On the whole, ROCK ON 2 has no story, no good music and no entertainment value. With its slow paced narrative, limited buzz and the demonetisation move by the Indian Government, the film will be a disaster at the Box-Office. - See more at: http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/movie/rock-on-2/critic-review/#sthash.J4LRn0hf.dpuf... full review

Thumbs down by Sreeju Sudhakaran, Bollywood Life ...On a separate note, I am not in favor of having Rock On 3, but can we have a spinoff on that Manjot character please? ... full review

So-So by Rohit Bhatnagar, Deccan Chronicle ...Shashank Arora has major scenes with Shraddha which he pulled off well. Even though the filmmaker tried hard to match up to the standards set by Abhishek Kapoor in 'Rock On', he unfortunately failed in his attempt. ... full review

So-So by Smita Vyas Kumar , Desi Martini ...Rock on 2 may have been far more enjoyable if it had been shorter. Lesser drama and a crisper telling may have increased the intensity of the story and of course some more music would have kept us entertained. It’s a decent movie, there’s just too much of it. ... full review

Thumbs up by Rahul Deo Bharadwaj, Desi Martini ...The entire narrative of Rockon2 has been kept deliberately subtle.Scenes which could have become high drama in normal routine movies have been handled with great maturity and for that director Shujaat Saudagar deserves applause. ... full review

Thumbs down by Tushar P. Joshi, DNA ...Rock On 2 might have been a great concept on paper, but it just doesn't become the sequel we all expected. Instead revisit the original and head bang to those tunes. ... full review

So-So by Rachit Gupta, Filmfare ...Like in the original film, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music plays a key part in the experience of Rock On 2. Every situation in the film is bridged or resolved with the songs. The music of Rock On 2 is not SEL’s best but it is unique and within the context of the film blends well. Songs like Manzar naya, Woh jahan and Tere mere dil add melody to the film. ... full review

Thumbs down by Johnson Thomas, Free Press Journal ...The film has no effect on your senses. The drama appears alien and the music doesn’t have the suppleness and beat to make the experience affective. Director Shujaat Saudagaar proves he isn’t quite cut out to mine nostalgia for a fancied re-telling! ... full review

Thumbs down by Vishal Verma, Glamsham.com ...Technically sound with Marc Koninck's decent photography. Music by Shankar Mahadevan, Loy Mendonsa and Ehsaan Noorani is a big disappointment. ... full review

Thumbs down by Manjusha Radhakrishnan, Gulf News ...As far as performances go, every one does their bit but they are let down by a confused storyline. Watch this only if you are a Rock On groupie, otherwise skip it. ... full review

Thumbs up by Rohit Vats, Hindustan Times ...Rock On 2 might not have a strong conflict in the storyline, but it definitely works as the narrative of a unique camaraderie among the boys. They have grown older, but haven’t lost their charm.... full review

Thumbs down by Ananya Bhattacharyal, india today ...In terms of making an impact on its viewers, Rock On 2 will do nothing. The one thing it will do is boost the Meghalaya tourism. In all, watch Rock On 2 for the picturesque locales of Meghalaya. Else skip it.... full review

Thumbs down Indicine ...Conclusion: If you were expecting Rock On 2 to maintain the same essence of Rock On, then you should brace yourself for a few changes. The music here takes a backseat and the movie becomes a story about Farhan’s character rather than an entertaining ensemble movie. It takes a lot of time to set up the main story and get to its point, but the climax prevents this staid sequel from becoming a complete letdown. You can watch it for yourself and judge, or you can save your notes. ... full review

So-So by ANISH MOHANTY, Kia Gia ...As the sequel of a modern-cult film, Rock On 2 does not quite match up. However, as a standalone film it has good entertainment value to offer to the audience. The film does not strike the high notes that Rock On!! did but is far from being a film that can be given a miss. ... full review

Thumbs down by Surabhi Redkar, koimoi ...Rock On 2‘s band Magik is completely tragic! If you were ever interested in forming a band, this one could kill your dreams! I’m going with a 2/5 ... full review

Thumbs down by Uday Bhatia, Live Mint ...With Akhtar and Rampal doing strong-men-in-agony routines, it’s left to Kohli to inject some fun, which he gamely does, even though it makes him look silly at times. Shashank Arora is intriguing as an ambitious shudhh Hindi-speaking semi-classical musician who joins Magik, but it’s an underwritten part. Kapoor does her own singing—fairly well, it must be said—as does the hoarse-voiced Akhtar. What is perhaps most surprising is that a film about musicians has nothing insightful to tell us about how music is made. In the fantasy world of the film, abandoned takes and flubbed notes don’t exist. It sounds right but rings false. ... full review

Thumbs down by Mayank Shekhar, MiD DAY ...One assumed this movie would capture the essence of that sub-culture. Or at least touch upon it. It would strike such a sticky (umbilical) chord, especially with the oft neglected land mass of India.... full review

So-So by Jaidev Hemmady, Movie Talkies ...So, if you are expecting something as 'rocking' as the prequel, stay away... ... full review

So-So by Kunal Guha, Mumbai Mirror ...Making his feature debut, director Shujaat Saudagar is fairly immersed in storytelling. But in the second half, the film nosedives like the film's lead, pouncing into the audience during a show. ... full review

So-So by Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV ...It rocks only sporadically, and it almost never sways the audience enough for the latter to crave for another helping. ... full review

Thumbs down by Rajeev Masand, News18.com ...The performances are adequate at best, and the picture-postcard photography of Meghalaya is refreshing. But as you leave the cinema in the end, you can’t help missing the distinct sense of fun that the earlier film delivered…and yes, those infectious tunes. ... full review

Thumbs down by Manisha Lakhe, Now Running.com ...Thankfully the Meghalaya band sings 'Hoi Kiw', which is peppy and catchy. The refrain begins to sounds like 'Hoi Kyon' (Hoi why!) and you add 'Hoi kyon banayi yeh picture!' (Hoi! Why did you make this movie!)' ... full review

Thumbs down by Sukanya Verma, Rediff ...Sadly, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's soundtrack, Khasi touches notwithstanding, just doesn't pull. ... full review

Thumbs down by Raja Sen, Rediff ...There is a wariness to his sighs, to his body language and to his overall tonality as he patiently deals with the petulant overgrown kids around him. I enjoyed watching him, grizzled and thoughtful and annoyed at being judged for judging. ... full review

Thumbs down by Namrata Joshi, The Hindu ...There is a hint of the old camaraderie and banter in the interactions of the old band members but not enough to bring back the nostalgia for the original in any big way for the fans. Nor does the sequel update itself enough to appeal to the millenials. No wonder Rock On!! 2 feels totally lost in an echo chamber of its predecessor’s popularity. ... full review

Thumbs down by Saumil Gandhi, Upper Stall ...There was no real scope for a sequel, and this film could have been made as any other film about any other music band. Come to think of it, that would have been a more liberating film to watch. Here, the baggage it carries is too much to shake off, and too good to match up. ... full review

So-So by Rummana, yahoo! India ...‘Rock On’ showcases some good performances, but it doesn’t recreate the youthful simplicity of the first part. And, most vitally, where is all the ‘rock’? ... full review

So-So by Raghav Jaitly, ZEENEWS.COM ...'Rock On 2' is a musical journey with hits and misses. The nostalgia factor here takes it a notch up on our entertainment scale. If you were impressed with the spirit of 'Magik' in 'Rock On!!' then 'Rock On 2' will prove to be an effective outing for you this weekend. ... full review
