wogma rating: The keen should rent; else TV (?)
quick review:

What's done well is done pretty neatly, what's not is pretty average, even mediocre. And yet, the entire set-up kind-a, sort-a works.

Rock On!! brought a warmth with the way it was told. It resonated with what we know – some relationships are worth wading through the tiffs. And sure the same story can be made into another movie. But, with the same background, the same characters and actors? I am not so sure it won't feel stale.

As is usual with stories that have been told over and over again, Rock On 2 will also have to bank on “how” the narrative unfolds. The dialogue and the situations. The trailer reeks of “same ol', same ol'” with Farhan Akhtar's character egging Shraddha Kapooor's character on to perform on stage. Will it then be a story of the latter's coming of age. I would welcome that one, even if it is nothing new.

The other aspect of Rock On and thus other expectation from Rock On 2 is good music. With lukewarm responses to the music in general, and adverse reaction to Farhan Akhtar's voice, I hope the music isn't a sign of things to come. Rock On felt fresh because it was sort-of the first time around, Rock On's music felt fresh because Farhan Akhtar's voice was different. Now, the same voice sounds overdone and stale. Hope we don't have to say the same for the film.
