Margarita With A Straw - Preview

wogma rating: Add to 'must watch' list (?)
quick review:

Touching upon a lot of intense topics, Margarita With A Straw gets you up and listening about all of them through a tale about a “different” person. But it doesn't necessarily get you engaged through and through.

The opening shot in the trailer got me hooked – not to the film, to Kalki Koechlin. On first viewing, I just couldn't take my eyes of her performance.

It is ironical that I was so smitten with Kalki as a person with cerebral palsy, that it took me a second viewing to register what I had noticed first – the film wants us to disassociate the disability from the disabled.

Diabetes doesn't become the identity of a diabetic but a developmentally disabled person is always thought of as that disability. Margarita with a straw tries hard to make us look at the human behind the disability – a person who can flirt and love, have a sexual orientation, have rights to her privacy and so on.

Hopefully, these are not the only references and at the same time the film won't go overboard in trying to make this point. From what it looks like, these issues will be weaved into the narrative. Can't wait to watch it!
