Review - Jodha Akbar...
Painstakingly made but painfully long. The history and politics is interesting but the teachers seemed to be in a rush to cover the course material. What we do know now though, is romance 450 years ago was same as it is now. It is a visual treat nevert...
[..In any movie in general, every extra minute beyond the 120-minute mark yields lesser enjoyment than the previous one. Unless, unless … you have an extremely captivating story to tell, or you are telling it in an extremely captivating manner..]
of late indian audiences have been spoilt with 2 hour movies thanks mainly
to the multiplex culture that has taken hold , the shorter the movie more shows plexes can run and the more cash flows in to filmmakers and mutliplex owners's coffers .
But traditionally our cinema has always been a 3 hour + affair (give or take few minutes) with a leisurely
interval thrown in between... and due to some unwritten principle followed by our directors the grander the movie the lengthier it has to be especially true for historical epics . Jodhaa Akbar is as grand and as epic as it can get plus it has ashutosh gowarikar's name attached to it you should expect walking in to the theatre you will be in there for a longer time . Despite the length , movie is ultimately a rewarding experience , very few are going to walk out the theatre totally disappointed .
Also you might be surprised to know ,this is the shortest film in gowarikar's filmography .
Lagaan : 224 min
swades : 210 min (indian version)
Jodhaa Akbar : 193 min
iam totally ignoring his pre-lagaan work (pehlaa nasha and baazi),
as i think with lagaan ashutosh gowarikar was reborn as a totally different and much better director . Three cheers for him for this special movie . Eagerly waiting for his next
i walked in a few minutes late in to the movie and couldnt catch the censor board certificate that they display before the titles, can you tell me how long the movie was in terms of reels ? iam guessing it is around 22 or 23.
thanks

Hey morph!
I don't think I have a problem with long movies. What I found missing here is content. Jodhaa had the lamest dialogues ever, and to accept that Akbar (who is resolute and knows what he is doing) was influenced by such wishy-washy dialogues was difficulr for me.
Similarly, the kitchen politics were laughable. That Maham Anga used just that one incident to keep the couple apart was ridiculous, considering she was a chief advisory.
Many such things irked me. These things were not there and yet it was long...
Am sorry, don't remember the reel length either.

movie rocks
it has been long seeing such a great movie on the screen
great movie indeed
i say awesome
[...] concurs but finds the movie to be painfully long. In a 5-star scale, Jodhaa Akbar certainly deserves 3, but that would translate to “Wait for DVD [...]
a must see,5 out of 5. the actors were really good. very nicely done. the coutomes and the conteent of the movie was nice.
it is a superbe and well made love story set in the mughal era and a MUST WATCH for every bollywood lover
I saw the first day first show here in US, that was Friday, Feb 15 2008, 5:00 PM. After traveling in massive rain for 2 hours, and boy was I disappointed??? And you know what was even worse, that I didn’t have to wait till interval to realize that I made a wrong choice, it was clear from the first 10 minutes itself, in the first “epic” fight
Well Nice Review Meetu !!

you decided what is essentially a love story to be bad based on the first 10 minutes which mostly consists of bacchan voiceover and horses and soldier charging !! huh ?!!
The movie is good...the costumes, sets, war sequence, jewelleries are cool...music is really nice & the most most most beautifull thingh is HRITHIK ROSHAN...he is just awesome....u can say alfaz nahi hamare paas uski khoobiyon ko bakhan karne ke liye....yhe most suitable actor for this role with great look, peronality & ability...I just love him
Mr Khalid mohammad and alike such as Meetu...... How can you insult a movie that potrays indian history in such a magnificient way, that is so fulfilling and captivating and that is getting huge praises from masses all over india.
KM, you are one of those people who would give 5 stars to the movies such as "kis kis ki kismat" or "buddha mar gaya"
because you only like those movies which has double meanings and cheap comendy in every scene.
You do not have any appreciation for a great movie which potrays indian history so beautifully which u can watch with ur whole family.
Seriously...do you have anything personally against Ashutosh or hritik or Ash. Or you have been paid hefty money by directors of cheap comedies to white such ripping reviews.
HT , you better give it a thought to retire this reviewer of yours or he will throw you out of business.
What a movie to watch. Even my little sister enjoyed the movie. I saw some kid s in the movie theater were clapping and enjoying the movie.Every one ws clapping for the dialogues. wow. super hit movie.
Akbar was mind blowing. I have no words to express the voice intonations and facial expression that akbar did with ease. Jodha was so beautiful and expressive.
Ashotosh has done good justice. H e needs a standing ovation. Hritikh you are super star. You should join hollywood. You are simply breathtakig. You are combination of fire passion skills and style. How could u do things so easily. ease with which you acted simply makes you reincarnation of Akbar. I am gonna watch this movie again and I have smsed every friend and enemy and recommended the movie. All my friends are raving about you.
you are simply fire you burn the screen I wrote a song for just now.................
AAP KYA CHEEZ HO DIL KE BADEY AZZEZ HO! AAP SITARON SE UPPER KABHI, KABHI DIL KAI KAREEB HO

Aks filmi you must be drunk while watching this movie. Or your brain washed away with the rain pouring on your head.
By far this is the best movie I have ever seen and produced so beautifully in this genra.
Hritikh acted so beautifully that for a minute I thought he was really Akbar.
When I walked out of the theater, I was simply speechless. And when I regained my real self the first thing I said...what a movie....simply out of the world.
I am in love with Akbar. And I wanna read everything that is related to Akbar.
WHAT bold decision to make a movie like this. And look at the acting, look at the voice modulation the walk, the style, grace. everythng was perfect.
Whole theater was watching with whistles and enjoying the small naughty things. Every battle was followed by hair raising events.
Jasaen e bahara song was mind blowing. Ash and hritikh are new couple, who gonna take the lime light....
watch and see..mark my words............ raja and sartaaj of bollywood hritik arrives,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Bollywood ka SARTAAJ- HRITIKH ROSHAN
Lovely movie to watch.Nice story.Hrithik delivered a dazzling performance. In a word superb.Aishwariya is looking awesome.
No morph dear, looks like you gave the review a total miss. I loved the first 10 minutes, its the wishy-washy dialogues that Aishwarya was given that annoyed me and which is why the romance did not work for me.
Rahul-Ruby, you liked the movie, we didn't. Personal attacks absolutely unnecessary!
hey guys, jus chill out by watching the splendid performance by hrithick roshan and ash.the movie is just great.

@meetu
my comment was not directed to you , it was in response to AKS filmi's comment No. 9 .
O really Meetu,ok will you please explain the public what works for you in movies which stars Malika or Rakhi....u promptly give 5 stars to such cheap movies.... so what if u are a movie critic, even then you are not supposed to give 1 page long ripping review about a movie which touches sentiments of millions of people specially rajasthan. You should learn to be politically correct in some places or u want to land urself in trouble !!!!
and noone 's going to buy u a shit...leave alone movie ticket.
Meetu sounds like so jealous of this movie. Looks like she is some one else's fan and does not digest such a wonderful performance. If asked her to deliver a word in a movie she would gasp.
People are against this movie coz they are just people.
Hritikh is superb, no actor can come near him. He is a legend. People never throw stones at fruit less tree.
So Hritikh and Ash be proud you acted in this movie, and we are so proud that we saw the movie. Keep the good work rolling.....everyone should watch this movie and yes take your children along. When the movie got over I was like comeon don;t let it go over.
FOR HRITIKH..
kYA KHOOB DIKHTEY HOO BADDEY SUNDAR LAgTEY HO!
Tum chhand ho ya sitarey hoon

Guys go and watch this movie. It is the best movie of this Century,
Ramno-4 they should have taken hritikh and ash.
I think Yash Chopra and Rakesh roshan and Ashotosh the great. in collaboration should produce a movie with a lead Hritikh and Ash and one hollywood villian..I am sure that movie gonna rock the whole world like a comet.
Jodha Akbar is mind blowing. Acting is superb. Hritickh is master blaster sarttaj kinf nawab royal when it comes to acting. Josha rani My cute ash dollfaced she is so pure so dignified so cool and emoted so well ..wacth jodha akbar its a lovely movie.

GIVE MEEEEEEEEEEEEE MOREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE======SUPER HIT MOVIE
i CAN NOT DEFINE THE magic of this movie in words. It is the best movie.
So Jodhaa was Akbar’s daughter-in-law, how could she be shown as his wife, is the question that’s running across the minds of mobs on the rampage. While posters are being burnt, hoardings razed and theatre owners threatened, its time for Indian Cinema to herald the arrival of a masterpiece------Jodhaa Akbar. A cinematic marvel with competent performances, technical brilliance and musical excellence. It’s a movie and beyond. It’s a story that not only needs to be heard but learnt from.
. All that Ashutosh Gowariker was attempting is to tell a tale of love, courage and conviction. However the freedom to translate one’s grand vision to a cinematic spectacle has always come at a high price. A faint-hearted director would have chickened out to avoid this entire royal rumble (pun unintended) ensuing the release of the film, but AG marched towards realizing his ambition, unfazed by skeptics, undaunted by saboteurs. The result is out and the verdict is clear-----the movie a true blue magnum opus.
In the meanwhile, those fortunate who can grab a chance to watch this painstaking endeavor are advised to go for it at the earliest. You’ll surely be proud to belong to the land of Jodhaa and Akbar……..Hindustan.
Murray kudos to you...
excellent review by Murray. Can you write something more about this movie. Excellent movie.
WATCH WITH YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
Tarun has really written a true and fantastic review. The movie is a classic and I am sure it will become a legend just like the actors who play the title roles. I cannot believe that these are the same people who were dancing like sexy brazilians in a dumb movie called Dhoom 2. What a transformation! thanks to ashutosh. You need brilliant directors to create and bring such a vision to screen.
I pray that this movie be a great success and more and more people see it and forget the controversies around it. It is an effort very few people in the world, even in the film fraternity will attempt. Some critics have talked about how the war sequence was full of errors. I would want them to shoot just one sequence and then talk. It is very easy sitting on the sea shore to comment on the fishermen.
Lovely movie to watch.Nice story.Hrithik good goood goood actor no actor of akbar
Narsi, so you like all movies? Because, from what you say no movie can be criticised unless you have made one. I guess, similarly no cricketer can be blamed if he doesn't play well unless you have played a match too!
Meetu is going crazy
Federer plays tennis, we need to watch the way he plays. People who don't understand the game might crticise even Federer. If asked to pick bad points on Federer and pete sampras people can run pages.
What we need is to enjoy the game. You are covering up the ripping review u posted on net. WHICH IS BULL....There is no truth in your review.. go and watch the movie again.
I did feel slightly disappointed with the movie.. I felt too many of the segments were not edited well or timed appropriately.
Ironically enough,in spite of the length, I found too many of the themes woven into the story slightly short.. I wanted less predictably and more flow. I enjoy period films so I didn't have any problems with the length or the content.
I found the character of abkar kind of cheesy, wanted to see more of a substantial character with more shades of grey and not so 1 dimensional.
What a horrible movie! Reminds me of Jashpal Bhatti's Flop Show, in particular the one episode about making serials.
Hrithik looks like a perfect cartoon in this movie, a complete misfit to the period and the ambiance. His catwalk in the movie makes one wonder - what he was thinking when he was playing the character (its not a ramp, for chrissake! Its supposed to be the Mughal era). The way he uses his sword looks really-really funny (I would like to request the makers of this movie as well as Hrithik to try and watch "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" in order to learn a lesson or two, if not about using the sword then at least about the expression that one should bear when wielding one) and the sequence of taming the elephant is simply hilarious. The war scenes looked just a clumsy attempt to copy the war sequences from western period movies (read Troy or Braveheart).
Watching the movie really made me doubt if it was coming from the hands of the same director who made Lagaan. What a drop in standards!!! And Mr. Rahman has probably put all the leftovers of the musical pieces that were left with him from his earlier works!! He seldom done something this bad before!
However the sets looked really great! I will give a 9 out of 10 for the sets of this movie.
All in all, a great comedy! But laughing for about three and a half hours is a tough job! Those who are still planning to watch it - I wish them best of luck!
Unnecessary and utterly boring
Loved this movie... Very nice well rounded movie
The movie is a complete waste of time and money!!
It's boring, the characters are half baked..and some of the dialogues (specilly from Ash..sucks!!)The politics is saas bahu stuff...and the war sequence is more childish and immature (specialyy the special effects..if at all u wanaa call them special)...meetu..i absolutely agree with u..i loved Hrithik-Ash in Dhoom-2..but this movie doesn't quite work for them...and all the people loving Hrithik ..calling this 'The movie of the Century' and writing shers for him..Guys..Get a Life!!
Jodha akbar is a master piece.first of all i would like to advice that one must watch this from the heart . not with a mind with thousands of doubts and questions about history or prejudice about the cast or costumes ..then you are lost in the superficial thought process..you absolutely miss the connection…when watched with involement they cannot miss small beautiful moments which magically bind you to the characters and the plot…
it is like drowning in the beauty of a painting …the subtle romance brought out between the young akbar and jodhaa mainly through the “eyes” is beautiful. this is a true artistic expression of romance. enough to ignite the passion in anybody …
there is no room for boredom anywhere. …..a real
classic master piece of our times……..the fight between akbar and sharifuddhin in the end is fabulous … it portrays the power of a mighty emperor…here is an emperor who is the symbol of Power , Might and righteousness and also ruthless when it comes to punishing the traitors ..but at the same time harbours such tenderness and love in his eyes for his queen that you would just drown into it… the most touching and beautiful scene was ….when the emperor perceives the light and is soaked in the divine love of god ..looses himself dancing with the sufis ….its a brilliant storke ……and the next beautiful moment for me in the movie was when jodhaa’s song Man mohana (calling lord krishna to leave kashi and mathura to come to her ..be one with her )..this song is symbolic as akbar cannot resist but leave his darbar and forget all who present there , keeps following the melody of the voice that magically draws him to her..and then for the first time he looks at her breath taking beauty and for a moment the world stops for him……then he is lost……
hats off to AR rehman for composing such soul level music…the song eshk -bahara hein is a master piece in itself.
“In lamho kein daman mein “song was the best part of the movie. what a way to show the two opposite energies drawn together with beautiful emotions … experiencing moments of completeness….this was the most artistic part of the movie.
i am sure ..western movies can never portray the subtle beauty of romance and passion shown in this movie . at least i haven’t seen so far.
a must watch for any one with artistic instinct…..
After mesmerizing the audiences with Lagaan and Swades, Ashutosh Gowariker this time chooses a completely different genre to express his cinematic vision .And does he succeed? Well, you would have to commend Gowariker for choosing a subject as cryptic as the love story of Akbar. In an age where historical films have rarely found support and appreciation amongst the masses (cannot remember any film but Mughal-e –Azam), Gowariker decides to tread the path which less able directors would fear to think of. Never mind, the widespread protests in Rajasthan against the authenticity of the love story, Gowariker’s attention to detailing does catch your attention. Gowariker’s vision subsumes a reined-in wealth of ideas and images into an opulent and aesthetic tale of love, ideals and secularism. And that is something to root for in an age of cynicism and religious warfare. It is not often that historical films of this cinematic splendor and caliber are made in India.
The film begins with young Akbar being entrusted the responsibility of the Mughal Empire following the demise of his father. Although his formative years are under the tutelage of his father’s trusted aide, Akbar very quickly develops his own ideologies and vows to be a people’s king. The film touches on various events in the king’s life which include his political alliance with the Rajputs and his subsequent love story with a Rajput queen. Political vendetta and sibling rivalry form an important part in Akbar’s quest to become a people’s king. That is where lies in the problem. The film frequently oscillates between so many diverse situations that the viewer finds it a tad difficult to decide what the main premise is –the love story itself or expansion of the empire and welfare of the common man. The film is expectedly on the slower side and its length (3 and half hours) is ought to cause a hindrance to its commercial viability (despite the presence of superstars). The editor should have used his scissors in a more prudent manner to give the film a slick look. Despite this glaring gaffe, the film more than compensates on other counts.
Gowariker’s direction is first rate. He handles the love scenes and war sequences with equal aplomb. His job is just made easier by the adept technicians on board. While Nitin Desai’s sets are larger than life and the costumes are rich in color and appeal, Ravi Chandra’s camerawork is marvelous. A.R Rehman’s music, as always is special. Ranging from the soulful Jashn –e Bahaara to the Sufi rendition of Khwaja re Khwaja to the visually enthralling Marhaba, the songs leave an indelible impression in your memory. The love story between Akbar (Hrithik) and Jodhaa (Aishwarya) is compelling.
The two give a new definition to love and lust. The eyes say it all and depict the sanctity of love. Of the supporting cast, Ila Arun (Akbar’s step mother) and newcomer Niketan Dheer (Sarfuddin) are competent.Aishwarya Rai looks stunningly beautiful as queen Jodhaa and delivers a duly restrained performance. But Jodhaa Akbar truly belongs to Hrithik Roshan. Be it his royal gait, impeccable dialogue delivery or expressive demeanor, he steals the show with his riveting performance. For a moment the viewer actually forgets that he is watching the screen character of Akbar.
So those who want to revisit their history books and witness high quality cinema, what are you waiting for? Grab your popcorns and let the magic unveil before you.
Thanks for your detailed review, Rahul. Just wanted to point out that Kiran Deohans is the cinematographer
Mainne Jodha Akber dekha aur isko dekh kar yeh mahsoos kiya ki Mughal Aur Rajpoot aikta ke karan hi itna bada Mughal samrajya khara ho saka Akbar aur jodha ka swabhiman poorn pyar TajMahel se zyada khoobsoorat hai kyon ki Akbar ne Jodha ke dill ko Talwar aur taqat se naheen, balki pyar se jeeta tha.
Film Atihasik hai magar gane aur sanwad mughle azam jaise naheen hain.
A beautifully made movie with all the cast enacting their parts with passion.
the film is so so not to bad n not to good
gud review meetu...i totally agree with u..it is just a hyped movie...but i would like to add something...its tooo boring yar.....i slept throughout the movie ..so dont know what was it all about...so came to see this blog..to know wat i missed (luckily) despite of being in the talkies...hahaha...a gr8 escape for me...the problem with Ashutosh is he thinks himself to be talented,,,..i wud agree ...he is talented in making audience sleep....and wasting resources..in a "beautiful" way..
anyone with sleep disorder?..movie is highly recommended to them...
One special appreciation for Jodhaa Akbar: the chorus singers and the playback is nostalgic of Sufiana songs and music at Hazrat Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti Dargah at Ajmer Sharif. The song on Ash is reminiscent of Mira's Bhakti bhajan. Tremendous entertainer. Kudos to all.
This movie rocks. This is very nice to see. My family and I loves this movie. Its very great!
