Avatar
quick review:
The storyline is tad clichéd and so are some dialogues. But at its very essence, Avatar is a story about love, hope and the fight for survival. The themes of colonisation and destruction of the native paradise are universal as is the film’s take on capitalism. Perhaps written with the Oscars in mind, Avatar is a movie that holds up a mirror to current society by setting it in the future and in a world outside our own.
This page has additional observations, other than the ones noted in the main review.
Plot Summary
Jake Sully finds himself replacing his twin brother in a science experiment that involves him getting into a Matrix-like situation, stepping into the forests of an alien planet, getting to know the race and eventually leading to their destruction.
What Worked
The immensely gripping screenplay
CGI -- especially Sully’s first flight atop a dragon-like flying creature is a must-see in 3D
The themes of love, colonialism and anti-capitalism
What did not
Note: This section simply lists the things that I did not like in this movie. This
is not the overall impression about this movie. Please read the
full review here
The somewhat clichéd story
Some equally clichéd dialogues
The most uninspiring war speech before the final assault

Hey, you have given the story away!! In the second paragraph! Lazy writing!
Why does ur writing seem so sloppy here? Were u not in the mood to write a review, or u just didn't care cuz this is a late review??? Disappointed :(
@manu: no she didn't give the story away, she has just mentioned premise. Yaar, woh toh ads me hi bata dete hai. Besides story fulltoo cliche hai, sunega toh bhi utna khaas nai lagega... lekin jab dekhega... Masha Allah!!!
But I do wonder, itni der baad kyu review aaya.
@meetu: meetuben, criticism ka tension nai lene ka.
@sanjeev kumar singh: sorry bhai, assume kar liya ki meetu ne review likha hai... so jo bhi previous comment meetu ke naam par hai tumhare liye hai, once again criticism ka tension nahi lene ka, ek kaan se sunne ka doosre se chhod daalne ka. film dekhanu, review likhanu... majjani life.
@Manu oops, while I haven't written the review, I certainly edited it. And I thought, this was a very basic thing about the story, that gives a vivid picture of what the movie is about.
@Sanat I'm sorry that you are disappointed. I think the review is pretty well written. Sanjeev (the reviewer) has written a short one, but has covered all bases.
@Dattaprasad Thanks for the well-meaning and good advice. A reviewer cannot take criticism 'ka tension'. I completely respect @Sanat and @Manu's point of view
@All Sanjeev will reply to your comments soon.
Where is the review? The last paragraph is cut and paste from all the media spin about the film, the second is the premise, so we have four paras left, of which one is very short!!! And yes, what is the difference that the director has bought and what is the table that has turned? Ha, ha.
@Meetu: Thanks for holding fort. Sorry for the delay.
@Manu: Sorry for giving away the plot... of the trailer! Because if you've seen the trailer that is all there is to it :-P
@Sanat: This is part of the ongoing Oscar series. Will try and get as many films from the nominations list and review them.
@Meetu i think we must mention this somewhere.
@Dattaprasad Godbole: Thank you sir. I appreciate your standing up for me. This is part of the ongoing Oscar Nominations. Avatar is the first of the series. Hope to have more.
@Manu: Get a life.
Ha, ha, is this how you, dear reviewer, deal with the fallout of your Poor reviewing skills?
You seem to have nothing else to do, but write poor reviews!!! And then you give personal advice!
Using jargon or good phrases is not enough, one should be able to provide some backup for one's statements about the film!
We poor viewers are not as well read as you are dear reviewer, we would like to understand your thoughts. Why don't you explain your point of view? Simple.
@Sanjeev Kumar Singh: ;)
@Manu: It's pretty evident. The film is worth watching on the big screen.
@Sanjeev, if it is pretty evident, why do we need you to write these reviews?
Avatar is such a masterpiece.. And I'm soooo pissed wth Amitabh Bacchan stating tht this film lacks soul... I mean seriously .. Grow up "big"B..
I wish there was some Cameron in Indian cinema too ..
Well, I didnt think too much of its story either. It's a special effects film, and that's about it.
Sanjeev !! In your world you can critisize any one and every one, irrespective of the effort they have put to make a movie, but if some one critisizes you, you seem to get irritated. Come on ...it's evident who needs to "get a life".
One thing we can be sure about is that this is not the first alien film. In these days where people have started raising voices of the existence of aliens in Area 51 and all, this film really shows us a different character of aliens. Besides, we can see that the film avatar was not at all focusing about these aliens but their core concepts of life where nature and life were given more importance to and everything is a chain and has a relation with one another!led tv
Yep, essentially it's a special effects spectacular with a plot that holds together well enough for a movie - if you don't mind feeling patronized by the White Hero Reaching Out and Touching the Noble, Innocent Nature-Loving Alien Culture and Seeing For the First Time the Oppression of it All, Then Saving Them As Only The White Hero Can. I mean, I'm a White Guy living in America, and I felt patronized by this movie!
@Ruchita - I understand what Amitabh Bachchan means, even if I don't really agree with him. He's thinking he's watching a feature-length cartoon, impeccably done, where no actor was involved. To an actor of his caliber, seeing acting reduced to mostly 3D animation must feel like James Cameron just sounded the death knell to human actors.
The irony is, a lot of AVATAR is still human actors in blue makeup - watch the big dramatic scenes again, and you'll realize the difference between them and the big effects scenes where it's all computer effects. A computer with a skilled team and a perfectionist director can go a long way, but they still can't replace actual acting - well, outside of yelling "OO-RAH!" while firing a CGI gun, that is.
Thing is, James Cameron is more interested in advancing film technology than anything else, and he's gotten lucky with his choice of projects that he now has the financial independence to do pretty much what he wants. Few other producers and directors have that much freedom - George Lucas thanks to STAR WARS (and we saw how that came out!), Robert Rodriguez thanks to his MARIACHI Trilogy and SPY KIDS movies (and his working outside Hollywood and shooting on HD video rather than film to save time and money), and ::cough:: the Baweja family, who spent I don't know how many Crores to bring us LOVE STORY 2050 (thus proving even more thoroughly than Lucas did that "going your own way" is fraught with disaster!).
