Been there, seen that. As predictable as the next underdog film. Good performances though.

So-So by Anna MM Vetticad, annavetticadgoes2themovies ...So yes, it needed to tone down its pitch in places and stay more focused, but there is so much to recommend Saala Khadoos. The fact that it is a sports film is reason enough to pop open the champagne since the genre is too rarely visited in Hindi cinema. As with most such films, the final outcome in the ring is not hard to predict here. The journey to that moment though is emotionally engaging and, after a point, nerve-wracking enough to draw cheers of delight. Adi and Madhi are worth investing in. That’s what makes this film worth watching. ... full review

Thumbs up by Baradwaj Rangan, Blogical Conclusion, The New Sunday Express ...A touch like that is worth five pages of dialogue. Even the most minor characters give us a glimpse of a larger story. I’m thinking about the boxing committee member played by Radharavi, who’s there for all of five minutes. But we see him with Prabhu, and we sense their shared history, the true nature of which is revealed at the end. That something this deep, this dramatic is accomplished through a laugh-out-loud line (one of many) is the sweetest punch of all.... full review

So-So by Sreeju Sudhakaran, Bollywood Life ...Saala Khadoos could have been a decent sports drama, if it had the touch of a master storyteller like Shimit Amin. Sadly, it turns out to be neither as memorable as Chak De India, nor as inspiring as Priyanka Chopra’s Mary Kom. At best, Saala Khadoos is a strictly average affair! Watch it only for the performances of the lead actors! ... full review

Thumbs up by Pooja Pandea, BookmyShow ...Watch Saala Khadoos because Madhavan and Ritika Singh have delivered endearing performances. The movie is all about hope, dedication, and passion – this combination can never go wrong. And finally, watch it for the love of sports. ... full review

Thumbs down by SUSHMITA MURTHY, Deccan Chronicle ...Blame it on the other glorious attempts at sports films that have spoiled us or a lack of soul in this one, there are too many déjà vu moments in the film. It explains itself when in the end, the screen reads, ‘This film is inspired by many true stories’. That’s what we thought. ... full review

Thumbs up by Rakesh Reddy, Desi Martini ...Another biggest plus in the movie is the music by Santhosh Narayan. The songs were offbeat and the BGM was awesome. He is indeed a talent. Cinematography was neat and editing was crisp and gripping. Overall, Irudhi Sutru is a perfect comeback for Maddy and a film to watch for sure for it's brilliant performances and a neat story of a boxer and his student. ... full review

Thumbs down by Mohit Patil, Desi Martini ...Verdict - A hackneyed, uninspired underdog story. ... full review

So-So by Mehak Khurana, Desi Martini ...Verdict - While Madhavan is brilliant as the Saala Khadoos, Ritika Singh emerges as the hero of the movie. ... full review

So-So by Ameet Bhuwan, Desi Martini ...Nonetheless, SK is a strong film. It promised a nice sports film, and it delivers in huge measure. It is the years first decent outing at the theatres and is not to be missed at any cost. ... full review

Thumbs up by Karthik Kumar, Desi Martini ...Verdict - Sudha Kongara scores high in her second outing with a genuinely moving film which is backed ably by remarkable lead performances. ... full review

Thumbs up by Sarita A Tanwar, DNA ...Saala Khadoos is emotionally gripping tale with heart and a punch. ... full review

So-So by Rachit Gupta, Filmfare ...This is also a Rajkumar Hirani production and Saala Khadoos bears an uncanny stamp of slice of life brilliance that's characteristic of his brand of cinema. It has the right balance of humour, drama and insight. It sheds light on the many fallacies of sports in India but it never gets preachy or boring. It always stays relevant and most importantly it engages you and entertains. This is Bollywood's happier answer to Million Dollar Baby. And to employ the old Mohammad Ali adage, this one floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee. ... full review

So-So by Subhash K Jha, FirstPost ...Alas, the film itself doesn’t match up to the glory of its stunning visual velocity or its leading man's towering performance. This is Madhavan’s Raging Bull. By far his career’s finest performance. The film could have been better, though. Much better. ... full review

Thumbs up by Johnson Thomas, Free Press Journal ...The characterizations though don’t have as much depth as was required to make this one worthy of attachment. There are quite a few unpalatable contrivances used to heighten the dramatics. Some of the confrontations between coach and pupil seem unnecessary. The tendency to veer off away from the objective of rags-to-riches glory also takes away from the overall excitement in this enterprise. ... full review

Thumbs down by Martin D'Souza, Glamsham.com ...SAALA KHADOOS is nowhere in the league of a good sports film, but considering the release it is lined up against this week, it is definitely worth a watch. ... full review

So-So by Sweta Kaushal, Hindustan Times ...Yes, avoid this grumpy drama if you are looking for a good sports film. If you must, watch it for Madhavan’s power-packed performance.... full review

So-So by RAJEEV MASAND, IBN Live ...Saala Khadoos sticks to familiar ground as far as a sports film goes, although the climatic bout is genuinely thrilling. Amidst all the faux sentimentality, we still get a protagonist that we can’t help rooting for. That is the film’s real success. I’m going with three out five. ... full review

So-So by Vivek, India Entertainment ...Overall a moderate entertainer, which could have been much better. ... full review

So-So by Ananya Bhattacharya, india today ...At the end of the day, Saala Khadoos works because of the performances by its cast. Maybe the scene would have been a bit different had Omung Kumar's Mary Kom not been released just a year-and-a-half ago. Watch Saala Khadoos for its lead actors. ... full review

So-So by Surabhi Redkar, koimoi ...Watch or Not?: Not a must-watch! Saala Khadoos is a typical Bollywood sports drama that is highly formulaic. Also, there is little sport in this sports-based film. ... full review

So-So by Shubha Shetty-Saha, MiD DAY ...But, unfortunately, much of it doesn't seem to work as the film, scene after scene, falls into a predictable rut and a ho-hum climax doesn't salvage the matter either. You walk out of the film feeling tad disheartened instead of that triumphant feeling that you expect from a movie belonging to this genre.... full review

Thumbs up by Pankhurie Mulasi, Movie Talkies ...All in all Saala Khadoos is a well-intentioned film, which has its heart in place. ... full review

Thumbs up by Divya Solgama, MoviezADDA ...Music by Santhosh Narayanan is good, especially ‘Saala Khadoos’, ‘Jhalli Patakha’, ‘Jagaa Khunnas’ and ‘Dil Ye Ladaku’. The background music is of top notch and works in the favour of the film. ... full review

So-So by Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV ...Moreover, the overly obtrusive background score and the songs that are frequently bunged in to heighten emotion are rather distracting. ... full review

Thumbs down by Sukanya Verma, Rediff ...Between its many, many confused, underdeveloped, raucous ideas, hides the film Saala Khadoos set out to be. Too bad it never made it to the screen. ... full review

So-So by Sonia Chopra, Sify Movies ...The film does have its share of endearing moments. One of them is a poster saying 'Harty Welcome' when Adi arrives in Chennai. One wishes the film had other such insights that made it different from the rest. Sadly, the film chooses to walk the predictable path, instead of carving its own. ... full review

Thumbs up by Shaheen Raaj, Star Blockbuster ...Last Word: Saala Khadoos is by far the best sports film so far since Chak De! India, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag Mary Com etc. A certainly not to be missed fare. ... full review

So-So by Namrata Joshi, The Hindu ...Saala Khadoos is unable to rise above the predictability and time-worn clichés of an average sports movies. One hopes the Tamil version would have come together better.... full review

Thumbs up by Meena Iyer, Times of India ...Both Adi and Madhi are rebels. But their fights appear forced and out of sync. But then again, the film keeps you engaged till the proud-India bout in the climax because of the convincing performances. Madhavan is good as the cynical coach who wants nothing more than to earn his stripes. Ritika is raw yet manages a knockout performance. Nasser, Mumtaz and Zakir lend good support. ... full review

So-So by Pallavi Patra, ZEENEWS.COM ...Well, he did and with such a powerful climax! This sports drama will stay with you if you can embrace it for its lead performance. To put it more aptly, the leads definitely pack a punch! ... full review
