Ramchand Pakistani (Hindi, Urdu) - Notepad

wogma rating: Buy the DVD already (?)
quick review:

A heartwarming story of an 8 year old whose destiny has a few very difficult years in store for him. Makes you question how many childhoods have we lost to the Indo-Pak issue.

Plot Summary

8 year old Ramchand who lives on the Indo-Pak border crosses the border to India by mistake. His father, Shankar follows him only for both of them to be arrested and thrown into an Indian Jail.

What Worked

  • The scene in which Champa hallucinates about her son and husband returning from India. The camerawork that captures her running towards the image is done really well.
  • The fact that abusive language is not beeped out, but a white noise replaces the curses. The white noise does not create the comic effect that beeps usually create.

What did not

Note: This section simply lists the things that I did not like in this movie. This is not the overall impression about this movie. Please read the full review here

  • The close-ups made Navaid Jabbar and Rashid Farooqui's make-up very obvious. This film could have certainly done without layers of foundation on their faces when they were in Jail.

This section lists things that I think are not important to the overall impact of the movie. In most cases, it could be explained away by something like, "we noticed the glitch after the scene was shot and there were schedule/budget issues and thus we could not re-shoot it". I like giving the makers the benefit of doubt, but I am amused nevertheless. Hopefully, they will tickle you too.

  • Considering that Champa is really running low on cash and is the only one she has to fend for, why does she take 2 kilograms of rice and 1 kilogram of dal at one go?
