Kidnap - Notepad

Quick Review

The crime-related questions that Kidnap asks are worth pondering over. But the glaring loopholes don't allow you to get absorbed completely.
This page has additional observations, other than the ones noted in the main review. Warning: this section has some details that could distort your experience while watching the movie. I strongly recommend reading this only after you have seen the movie or if you have decided not to see it.

Plot Summary

Kabir (Imran Khan) kidnaps Sonia (Minissha Lamba) to settle some scores with her father Raina (Sanjay Dutt).

What Worked

  • The "rape" scene - it was pretty intense.

What did not

Note: This section simply lists the things that I did not like in this movie. This is not the overall impression about this movie. Please read the full review here
  • How did Kabir know Sonia was going to go swimming alone? It wasn't a planned outing.
  • When Kabir calls Sonia's mom for the first time, he says he'll call the next day at the same time. This was at 9.30pm. But the next day he calls during the day.
  • It is really weird when the kidnapper allows so much emotional talk between the kidnapped and her family.
  • Acting by the sister at the orphanage.
  • They went all out to show Sonia as a spoilt brat. So much so that she forgets her best friends engagement party and that too when she was supposed to perform at the event!
  • How does the jail's cook manage to cook for all the inmates on a kerosene stove!?
  • Sonia manages to pull Imran's body while he's unconscious and lying down, just with one hand?
  • That was one weird ponytail the target was wearing in the climax!
  • Kidnapper with a heart that he is, he takes the kidnapped to all natural water-bodies around because she wants a shower.

Nitty-Gritty

This section lists things that I think are not important to the overall impact of the movie. In most cases, it could be explained away by something like, "we noticed the glitch after the scene was shot and there were schedule/budget issues and thus we could not re-shoot it". I like giving the makers the benefit of doubt, but I am amused nevertheless. Hopefully, they will tickle you too.
  • Wow! Mallika (Vidya Malavade) managed to get pregnant at 18 and then become a doctor! Woman really can do anything!!
  • Vidya Malavade's hair looks absolutely unkempt.
  • Raina lives in the US, Sonia spells out his phone number which sounded like an Indian one.
  • Bag drops miraculously from 5th floor in through a car sunroof.
  • Irfan (Rahul Dev) hits Kabir exactly on his shoulder through the open areas of a car on the move and taking turns.

Kidnap = total bakwaas movie, bad & untimely songs, crazy casting (Vidya Malavde plays Minissha Lamba's mom).

Agree with ur thoughts Meetu..Kidnap had a very interesting premise..loved the way Kabir's background was shown in Manga-like animation in the opening credits..
but the movie had too many unintentionally hilarious sequences which spoiled the mood..plus the minisha lamba - vidya malavade combo was a big distraction..when we first see them our thoughts are why them as mom daughter..then there's this attempt at an emotional scene between them in the beginning which was another let-down..
Imran Khan was strictly ok and seemed out of depth in the scenes where Minisha tries to seduce him..
Overall a project reduced to nothing :(

Overall a let down; Imran does well in pieces; Minissha is a complete misfit in the role and so is Ms Malavade.

Editing and Cinematography are both poor; except the opening cedits (though INSPIRED are OK).

Chase scene at the end is good with Imran (Sanju baba's double is horrible here though).

Biggest let down here was actually Sanjay Dutt; I do not recall a poorer performance from him in recent times.

My sugegstion: Watch it only if it is aired on your favorite cable cinema channel :-(

And yes I agree with the "embarassing" situations; also there is a scene with Dad and Daughter where it appears more like a lover relationship in the way it is shot... Har-har!!

The shooting scene towards the climax is quite predictable..

AND Ms Minissha; does not appear sensual in the movie at all.....
