Will smith is not only the most bankable african american actor , he is biggest hollywood superstar currently, morgan freeman and lawrence fishburne are mostly character actors and nowhere in the same league in terms of bankability . denzel washington might have been a better comparison . poorly informed reviewers put me off !!
if i had gone purely by your rating for movies released this year , i would have died of Cinema starvation waiting for "vidoes" to release!..do you work in some racket for Moser Baer..LOL !!
whats wrong with this movie now? wont one have a good time watching this on big screen ?!! why does it get clubbed with that monstrosity called De Taali ? are you saying this one is only as good as De Taali !..Seriously ?!
you decided what is essentially a love story to be bad based on the first 10 minutes which mostly consists of bacchan voiceover and horses and soldier charging !! huh ?!!
i walked in a few minutes late in to the movie and couldnt catch the censor board certificate that they display before the titles, can you tell me how long the movie was in terms of reels ? iam guessing it is around 22 or 23.
of late indian audiences have been spoilt with 2 hour movies thanks mainly to the multiplex culture that has taken hold , the shorter the movie more shows plexes can run and the more cash flows in to filmmakers and mutliplex owners's coffers . But traditionally our cinema has always been a 3 hour + affair (give or take few minutes) with a leisurely interval thrown in between... and due to some unwritten principle followed by our directors the grander the movie the lengthier it has to be especially true for historical epics . Jodhaa Akbar is as grand and as epic as it can get plus it has ashutosh gowarikar's name attached to it you should expect walking in to the theatre you will be in there for a longer time . Despite the length , movie is ultimately a rewarding experience , very few are going to walk out the theatre totally disappointed .
Also you might be surprised to know ,this is the shortest film in gowarikar's filmography .
Lagaan : 224 min swades : 210 min (indian version) Jodhaa Akbar : 193 min
iam totally ignoring his pre-lagaan work (pehlaa nasha and baazi), as i think with lagaan ashutosh gowarikar was reborn as a totally different and much better director . Three cheers for him for this special movie . Eagerly waiting for his next
its like a big buffet lunch , some dishes are great , some are ok , and with some you regret putting them on your plate . Overall its a filling meal .
Also , good to see sanjay gupta maturing as a filmmaker , finally he has realised that movies are more than just showing your leading men catwalk towards the camera in slow-mo with blaring rock music in the background !
i couldnt help but wonder if this could have been a better movie had mishra got the casting of his principal characters right ..soha was good as an aspiring and upcoming startlet but when she had to transform in to meena kumari like doomed actress she was just not believable and definitely the director could have done better than to cast rajat kapoor as the ageing superstar , he just doesnt have the range to play out this complex character .
also it was quite funny to watch this "circle of love" unfold with prem kumar ,nikhat ,ratnabali and zafar sleeping with each other at some point of time (of course not zafar and prem kumar LOL !) ..reminded me of "Closer".
the film does have some nice moments but overall just doesnt work as a whole , the episodic fragmented narrative fails to captivate through the movie's length and movie starts to feel long ,really long . was this the longest film ive seen this year or it just felt that way , have to check the movie's running duration!!
hahaha..its just that me thinks you tend to overanalyse movies ! :)
i dont think farah or SRK took thier audience for granted , quite the contrary , they went to great lengths by throwing everything they had , every trick they know to entertain thier audiences. it didnt work for you but it worked for everyone i know who has seen the movie.
no smoking , now thats taking your audience for granted , expecting them to see your movie and then log on internet to read the director's psychotic blog to understand it!
no your sense of humour hasnt take a break ! you yourself said you "thoroughly enjoyed" the bollywood gags (which incidentally is like 75% of the movie !), but maybe just maybe if you havent taken your notepad and pen with you ..you might have liked the movie more .;) OSO is not meant to be analysed with a pen and paper in hand , its meant to be consumed and enjoy it while it lasts!
"I lose the golden opportunity of truly criticizing Shah Rukh Khan’s acting capabilities. Spoof, right? One is supposed to overact"
well..shouldnt you just give him credit for that , its difficult to overact when your characters demands you to overact ! ..i dont think anyone would have pulled off OSO except SRK !
if there's a bravery award it should go to vishal bharadwaj who decided to produce this mess of a movie and stood there while anurag kashyap so smug and overconfident of his talent ran amok with his cryptic and incomprehensible execution of this plot with utter disregard for his audience . each scene especially in the second half unfolds as if anurag was trying to show off how intelligent he is to us unintelligent life forms .
The basic plot idea could have made a decent short film , which it did as one of the segments in Darna mana hai,but to make it in to an engaging full length feature would have been a challenge to anyone and anurag with his over-indulgence and in his goal to delivering something "different"messes it up completely.
agreed on technical credits all top class .
anurag needs to get a grip on himself else this talented guy will lose it like his mentor RGV.
if this is "intelligent" cinema , god save us ! . i will prefer the average bollywood potboiler over this any day
ok i remebered you giving favourable review to two very lengthy movies SEI and umrao ,i probably might have got the ratings mixed , still SEI reached nowhere near the levels Metro reached . its not like metro aimed not to entertain :), the approach differed Metro went for a quasi realistic approach , salaam-e-ishq went for a Johar-chopra patented bollywood approach . one worked and entertained , another failed miserably and bored big time . 1 hour 50 minutes of solid compelling cinema is good enough to make a trip to the theatre for me , even if climax didnt work for some they still get to carry some really great moments and very well etched characters from this movie .
i went with a group of four friends and yeah them me and rest of the audience in the auditorium were laughing *WITH* the movie in the climatic moments rather than at it ..i could differntiate because i saw the same audience laughing *AT* the movie when three dudes with the guitars appeared for the fifth and sixth time ! ive sat through enough movies to sense whats working for the audience and what isnt .. well thats about it on metro from me , the movie with all its flaws was easily one of the best hindi movies to hit theatres this year.
how come navin and meetu gave away similar responses ?.
there are lot of other movies , we have similar views on..shakalaka boom boom for example ;). i wont write here if i agree with you , only in cases i disagree strongly with your view i post :-D
For me , biggest department where hindi movies lack is not technology (anyone can buy fancy equipment, special effects etc ) its the character development , creativity in story telling , plot construction these are some things you cant buy off the shelf . You have to *work* on it . So if any hindi movie throws up believable three dimensional character who behave and talk real rather than act like they are part of movie , iam hooked !. metro does it , very well and if his past two movies are any indication i feel anurag basu is getting better at this with each outing . Except for dharamendra's character who for some reason either because i dont like dharamendra or i dont like old age romances never worked for me , all the other characters in the movie were very well fleshed out and had a definite arc and they behave consistently throught out . This is difficult to do , if you cant believe , see "salaam-e-ishq" to find out what happens to a movie which gets this wrong (btw you gave a higher rating for SEI compared to metro ) . no amount of extravagant sets , technical wizardry can salvage the movie .
Thats why movies like Metro should be patronized and watched on the big screen and recommended whole heartedly to anyone who cares for hindi cinema.
Shilpa/Shiney ending probably worked for you , because something unexpected happened ? the climatic moments for irrfan /konkona story were quite a hoot and it really bought the house down where i watched the movie . sharman/kanagana was kind of low key but still it worked.
and regarding the website name , i think acronym like WOGMA or something catchy, will work . there are lot of other sites which have bigger names and are popular by thier acronym or short cut names , case in point aintitcoolnews can be accessed as www.aicn.com
black friday ,ekalavya and now metro , list of really good movies that you didnt "get" . dharmendra-nafisa story didnt quite work for me too and the appearance of those three guy band again and again got a little on my nerves after awhile. but that said , i found metro to be a extremely well scripted and well acted movie . a rarity , a multiple story line ,character driven movie that actually works and when it does works it works big time . This is the movie salaam-e-ishq wanted to be . all the stories were tied up very well in the end too.
also i couldnt understand the big gap between your rating for music (2.5) and lyrics (4.0) , only reason people will notice the songs'words -atleast in a hindi movie , is if music is good , unless they are selling supplying lyrics printed on a booklet .
nice work on the site btw , could you get a shorter url maybe , the current site name is little difficult to type .
Will smith is not only the most bankable african american actor , he is biggest hollywood superstar currently, morgan freeman and lawrence fishburne are mostly character actors and nowhere in the same league in terms of bankability . denzel washington might have been a better comparison . poorly informed reviewers put me off !!
btw between a movie that makes me "laugh at few places" and a movie that makes me "smile throughout" , i will take the latter any day .
hmmm..not a random tribute ..its like the movie's lead pair who were waiting for "true love" to arrive from some other place but it never did .
it was much much better than decent and definitely leagues ahead of de taali ...
@Ps
You should !.. go ahead and watch this one .
if i had gone purely by your rating for movies released this year , i would have died of Cinema starvation waiting for "vidoes" to release!..do you work in some racket for Moser Baer..LOL !!

@meetu
my comment was not directed to you , it was in response to AKS filmi's comment No. 9 .

For me to interpret a movie it should engage me at some level .no smoking didnt.
My only interpretation after sitting through it is , No smoking is a bad movie.
hahaha..its just that me thinks you tend to overanalyse movies ! :)
