  • Slumdog Millionaire -- Is it really poverty porn?:

Saved me a post. My 2 cents. I am uncomfortable with a few things. One is when its called an Indian film. I am not sure if the setting, the cast, and some of the crew should be the only criteria for this label. For me , an Indian film is when all 3 prepositions of er, democracy :) are met with - of, by and for (Indians) and so this, to me, is a Brit's take on a few parts of India, not to be confused with the complex setup that is India. And because its packaged for a Western audience, I'm uncomfortable that only the underbelly is highlighted, and not say, the multiplex going middle class. I am mildly irritated that we are moving from one stereotype of snake charmers and elephants to another one of slums and call centers. Does that entail that deep within, I care about a westerner's judgment and approval? Gah, that really makes me uncomfortable. Lastly, I wonder if say, a 'Mumbai Meri Jaan' made, fulfilling all criteria required for an Oscar nomination, would've been nominated? Isn't that a take on India too? I am a bit offended that a Westerner's 'incomplete' view of India is deemed worthy of a nomination. But having said all that, it was an entertainer. I can see that I dont have a problem with the movie, I have a problem with the hue and cry surrounding it (except for the music, that I love) and with the possible assumption that this, baby, this here is India. That's faux, and I'm uncomfortable for the recognition (as something complete) of something that's been packaged for an audience.
