Tare Zameen Par - Notepad
Tare Zameen Par
quick review:
Classy and charming. Composed and elegant. Aamir Khan delivers his first baby with élan. The hard labor shows in a compassionate portrayal of a sensitive issue.
This page has additional observations, other than the ones noted in the main review.
Plot Summary
Ishaan Awasthi (Darsheel Safary) is a dyslexic, but no one around him knows that. Ram Nikhumb (Aamir Khan) puts his faith in Ishaan and helps him work on his weaknesses and enhance his strengths.
What Worked
- The gutter scene in the beginning, beautifully shot!
- Titles - adorable!
- The manner in which the street vendors were captured in the sequence where Ishaan is roaming on the streets.
- The shudder Darsheel gives when the car starts (at the hostel).
- The way Ishaan's character has developed. You know he is the kind who would hate showing his tears in public and thus refrains from crying when he is hit on his knuckles.
- Portrayal of how color is sucked out of Ishaan, a child whose only true love is colors.
- The scenes in which Ishaan is shown gazing at the scenery - a breathtaking composition.
What did not
Note: This section simply lists the things that I did not like in this movie. This
is not the overall impression about this movie. Please read the
full review here
- How can a school which boasts of discipline allow a parent to interrupt class?
- The principal of the school did not look stern enough to be such a stickler for discipline.
- How come Ishaan became such a sudden favorite at school that he got a standing ovation?
Nitty-Gritty
This section lists things that I think are not important to the overall impact of the movie. In most cases, it could be explained away by something like, "we noticed the glitch after the scene was shot and there were schedule/budget issues and thus we could not re-shoot it". I like giving the makers the benefit of doubt, but I am amused nevertheless. Hopefully, they will tickle you too.
- Teachers announcing marks of 60 children in front of the whole class, as if she was taking a roll call. Where does that happen? Marks usually are kept secret. And even if marks are announced they are just of the highest and the lowest scorers.
- Ishaan wears a uniform that is two sizes bigger than what he needs. Again, superficial things purposefully used to exaggerate situation and evoke empathy.
- Where did Ishaan get money to buy the gola (ice-candy) and take a bus ride? He used his school bus to go home, why would a third grader have money?

hey meetu .. u can uplaod this review too.. not tht i agree with it, but it is quite different from the majority of taare reviews.
http://movies.indiatimes.com/moviereview/2638576.cms
I agree with almost everything you've written in the review, except that I did not feel it was lesson for parents and teachers only. It's a BIG lesson to everyone; just accept each other for who and what they are...I am good, so are you!
I am all praises for Aamir Khan. Oh! and Darsheel Safary too, but I guess it takes a good director to create good actor out of a kid, so, the credit goes to Aamir again.
This was one movie that made me cry, like *really* feel and cry. And I mean it in the best sense (I was happy watching the film). The emotions were portrayed SO well!
Hey Meetu... that was real quick... Generally we have wait for several days to see ur review but this time u made it on the first day!! Anyway i am looking forward to see this movie on Big screen!! Bas Tickets nahi mil rahe.. :(
Great start from the director in Aamir. Simply lovely!!
Naina, done! Thanks for the link.
Pooja, I know exactly what you mean!
TinuAnand, I in variably have at least one review out on Friday evening. The only Friday I have missed as far as I can remember is November 9th because it was Diwali. So, do check every Friday! Do not miss this one in the theaters and do come back and let us know what you thought!
Biswa, absolutely!!
Can't we give 6/5 to director and lyricist ? They deserve it.
hi
i think the movie is fantastick......... it makes the audience to think out of the conventional box at least in the matter of children ........ the children those who are weak in the conventional studies....... it is also an well directed by the debutant Amir Khan as director...... as a actor he is my hero........... it will be sad if move will not be hit ......... but it is imperative that movie will not be as hit the other bollywodd movies are .......... reat is well made movie............
hi..
i still not see this movie but i am waiting for it from a long time...
and i hope it will be very good.....
The movie is simply outstanding. Music is just appropriate. For all of those who are trying to critically judge the movie and are trying not to over-rate the movie, should just chill out for sometime and keep their comments for the “other commercial cinema”. This moive is simply outstanding and deserves a huge applause, plain and simple. Aamir Khan has made the Indian cinema proud.
Taare Zameen par was a heart touching movie. It is brillantly directed and the movie is as perfect as Aamir Khan. He has always been a powerful force in making his movies a complete finished product and now we see his total dedication in bringing out one of the best movies Bollywood or rather the world has ever seen. This is Oscar material.

Hi all,
TZP Really touched my heart,
The day next i saw the film the child mischif and the sarrow used pass my mind every now and then,
This story is a kind of similar to my life,
I belong to a middle class family from …
Because i too had school fobia in my child hood,
Yes i was a really bad at reading and playing games like other kids,
I belong to a middle class family,
I used to hate school and i left home for 8 months i travelled all of india with out money,
Luckely i came back to home and
my old school throwed me out then i got in to new governament school where i felt i am better than most of childrens,
I saw my school mates who are worste than me and teachers did not had much issuee with me,
Just like the kid i was suffering ,
But here no amir kan in my life ,
I felt i am good as the governament school,
Thanks that i found my luck and i was thrown out of english school,
They used to beat like dogs and cats,
Its a very big story,
Every teacher should know that children are not slaves,
And parents should understand childs difficulty insted of beating them like dogs,I know every teacher cant affort time for every body but a little change in all teacher can bring up the kids,
I found my way,
Yep i passed SSLC which no one would have ever thought off who knew me,
Now i am 26,
And working as a software engineer in a MNC,
Today i solved a bug so i have free time to write on this blog,
But there are 1000 like me,
I may not visit this blog again in my lifetime,
But my message to all viewers of this blog,
Please if u ever get a chance to be a part of teacher or in feture ur kid might have a poor learning skill like that child ishan,
please understand them and try to give them love and never break the confidence in such a way bring them.
Thank your for reading,
And Special thanks to amir for his time and effort to bring a good story,
TC
Bye
Love you all,
Wow... Just wow....
i like this movie like anything i still cry as i rember song of maa ,, this movie dosent come out of my mind brlliant amir for such movie
its amazing movie a lesson 4 all parents n teacher supurb work hats of 2 aamir khan he is smply gr8 though i m shahrukh khans big big fan but but now i olve amir too
the movie touch my soul
Liked the review except the subtitle "A lesson for parents & teachers".
Though nothing wrong about the way it was done but the complete 9 x 3 = 3 was actually a rip off from calvin n hobbes sunday strip.
But overall the movie was just EXCELLENT.
The direction was flawless. You can't point out a single instance when there was any mistake in screenplay, dialogues or in the expression of even any out-of-focus performer.
good movie for every one, must watch, much better than to qualify for the Oscar,
I myself is a Physical therapist and has treated Physically n mentally challenged kids.
Its great to find someone made an effort bring the cruel truth in public.
The larger answere to these kids queries lies in having more and more people getting aware and get involved in upgrading these kids.
The movie was undoubtly the masterpiece and need more and more of movies on such topics.
A great movie and an equally good review :-)
I must say Meetu this is your finest review (according to me). You actually penned down everyone's feeling :-).
> “mein kabhi batlaata nahi” kept me speechless
Same here. I too can't remember the last time when the lyrics made me cry. Each and every sentence of all the songs is so appropriate it actually justified the use of Songs in Bollywood Movies ;)
Just there is this feeling of incompleteness. Everyone is praising Darsheel, Aamir, Prasoon... but people are not talking much about Amole. That mysterious controversy between him and AK is also cause of my sympathy for him. In spite of being AK's great fan I feel very sorry for Amole. And I hope this great guy will be able to direct his next film :-)
Regards,
- Ashish K.
I congratulate the Amir Khan and his team from the botom of my heart for making such an excellent movie "Taare Zamin Par". I found that, Amir Khan is not only an actor/director, but also a philosopher. This movie, itself is a lesson for parents and teachers that teaches, How to deal with children?
Thanks universelingal!
Thanks Thejesh, it would be great feedback to know why.
Puneet - i think, copying or "getting inspired" is okay if it is done well.
Thanks a ton, Ashish K!
Renuka(critic of timesgroup) must take rest, have a good sleep ..feel fresh and then watch the movie. Write a review only if you understand what you are talking about! In the whole movie you felt that the director is only trying to create awareness about "Dyslexia"? How poor imagination of a Movie Critic!! Haven't you seen your childhood in the movie, haven't you realized that how mechanical the modern parents are, haven't you realized that loss of emotion of a small child after getting detached from his parents in a forceful manner? Renuka, you need a brake, I am sorry to write that you have a learning deficiency too and that is due to lack of emotions… look back at your childhood you'll find out the cause of the damage. Good Luck!

To be honest, I have almost never written a review for a move! But this make me go out take the effort to write one, It is THE best movie I have seen. I am a part-time social worker, so this movie touches me more! I used to write b as d, and vice versa. In the character of the father, I see my own father. Believe me it causes more pain than one can ever imagine!
If someone has not seen this movie, I would personally recommend them to see the movie. I have saving this movie for ever in my heart. I hope this movie gets nominated for Oscars, it truly deserves it by all means! Previous movies by Aamir Khan do not compare one bit to this! Truly this is THE best movie I have seen, I cannot repeat it again! I really hope all of the world does not miss it. It has one of the most strongest messages that I have seen in Indian movies.
I see myself in this movie! I think that teachers in India should pay more attention to their students at an early age and show them a way instead of put pressure on them and push them to a corner in the rat-race of life! It is a pity that I had to go through that I hope this movie convinces that both parents and teachers and more so the society pays attention to small children to avoid such mishaps! I does cause a large impact to a child and his future.
Hats of Aamir for this classic, You reminded Mahboob Khan, Guru Dutt, Bimol Roy, Satyajeet Ray, HK Mukherjee & Many more. We Salute you for your great contribution to Indian Cinema. The Best movie about Kids I have seen after Mani Rathnams ANJALI.
Above All SHAME TO OTHER KHANS (Three Big S-S-S)in Bollywood.
"3 Tickets?Taare Zameen par," I asked at the Advance Booking counter.A
guy next to me said,"Arre Welcome ka show hai naa??".His friend looked
at the poster and predicted,"Mast timepass rahegi!".Hmmm..I
thought..Should I also take Welcome?Who wants to get bored for 3 hrs
anyway?By the time I could decide, the counterwalla had the tickets
ready for me.Disappointedly I paid and said to myself,"Chal na.Iske
baad Welcome dekh lenge".
The introduction started with jumbling letters and a colourful
animation. Then I saw water. And a face. Face with a focused
look..innocently sticking his tongue out in concentration. His aim?
Kidnap fishes from the gutter.
I think I had moist eyes.Was I seeing the 8-yr old...ME? For the next
2.5 hrs I had frequent chocking lumps in my throat with an inability to
breathe properly. Sounds like torture. But Felt like magic.. :)
I think by this time we all know what the movie is all about. And also
its flaws-thanks to some _____(don't know what) out there in the world
who don't have enough capacity to enjoy anything fully.
I am writing this column only for those who pointed out flaws in the
movie.I have a question for you guys.
How many movies have you so
critically-intellectually-arrogantly-insensitively analysed? Or should
I ask,"How many movies have you even analysed?".This movie has got even
the non-writers writing for it,discussing the
angles, quality, direction, scene details and what not.Can you think why?
I didn't find any interesting blog discussing about the technical details
of OSO,Welcome,Partner etc etc..What is making us discuss so much about
TZP guys??
Its the impact that the movie made on you.The tears which were rolling
down your eyes..the helpless expressions of Ishaan which forced you to
introspect..and probably the overly critical nature of his father and
teachers..which you want to defend.
TZP is above any criticism or any cynic who knows the price of
everything and the value of nothing(thank you Nikumbh Sir). You guys
criticized the movie for being slow,Amir crying too much, having seen
some empty beds,oversized clothes,unnecessary songs...How come you TZP-critiques forgot
to criticize Ishaan's father? How come you guys forgot to criticize the
way his art teacher punished him?How come you guys forgot to criticize
the sports teacher for fairing pathetically at the painting
competition??
Probably because these people reflect a little of you all...
Get a life friends. If you keep judging TZP,you'll have no time to love
it.
On a light note..What if I had been razor sharp to stop that
counterwaala from tearing the tickets and had instead taken the tickets
of Welcome???? Sigh...
Taare Zameen Par.
A movie which made me realise that
Sometimes in life,it is healthy to be slow and dumb.
Taare Zameen par was a heart touching movie with beautiful songs specially maa.... and tare zameen par.it makes me cry. i feel this is one of my best movie in my life.there are some moments in movie when u can not stop yourself to cry. This movie have message to parents and teachers.i was waiting this movie since a long time but i can not imagen this how beautiful this movie is.
This movie teaches a lesson to the guardian as well as teacher how to behave their child or student, behaving abnormal or very different from the behavior of common children. This movie is really great i love the role of the child by name Ishant in the movie and i admire Aamir, its director and story writter. This movie will be appreciated by every class of the society so this is its beauty.
Shail
A MOVIE TO REMEMBER
this movie is really needed for like indian country child. The teacher must see this movie and also see the parents. The movie said that every child has power and ability to do any research tipe activity.
when i was seeing the movie i felt as if my brother's childhood is being played in front of me once again (he is 15 yrs younger to me) and i wished he too had gt a teacher like RAM character played by mr amir khan may b he culd b a different person
the movie deals with a subject tht our society shuns to talk abt but is a very necessary one as many children these days r suffering from this problem
parent's and teachers both shuld take it as a challenge instead of running from it as amir khan says in the movie tht he knows the symptom but the parents need to find out wht is the cause of those symptoms
the movie went straight to my heart as i had some similar experiences while dealing with my brother
the direction is supurb
the new boy darsheel has done pure justice to his role
every thing in the movie is too good film makers shuld make more movies on this subject as they play a very imp role in the lives of common people
it's really odd or rather unbelievable to expect a film like TZP from Bollywood. in most cases these type of films never mark anything in so called box office i.e. "Khamoshi,Akele Hum Akele Thum".... but without any doubt TZP will mark the top place in minds of the people who looking for genuine stuff, welldone Aamir,,,,preicious Khan....Mahesh-Colombo
THATS A REALLY GOOD MOVIE BUT I WAS A BIT BORED AT THE END (THE PAINTING COMPETING) THAT WHERE THE MOVIE SLOWSDOWN~~~STILL I WOULDGIVE 3.5/5
[...] (old) blog post by Aamir Khan about the process they followed for recording the background score of Tare Zameen Par which I found very interesting: The work on the TZP background score is going rather well I think. [...]
Hey Good Lord....I could not still get over the heavy heart after watching the movie. Amir has shown it that it is not stardom...you need to create a niche for yourself...all that old clad that we used to talk about...Rajkapoor, Gurudutt...I guess he has a long way to go and hats of to him to create TZP.
I relate the entire sequence to me..my childhood...I never liked studies...because it was always imposed on me...I myself do not know how I got off the school and the college....but believe me..the inner strength is not made of always academics...
I have 3 children...two of them my own and one adoped....the adopted son is a carbon copy of me...he came to us as an angel when he lost both his parents and the trauma was heavy on his heart (he was only six when he lost his parents)...he is smart..he is agile but does not want to study...I relate each scene of the film with my life...We as parents often bully ourselves and when dont understand to tackle a situation, often become aggressive to cover up ourselves....
Its a while something has touched me so far...Kudos to Amir Khan productions
If I were to take up a social cause, I have decided that it would be children. Do let me know if anyone requires any kind of help for institutions or schools which I would be happy to become a member.
Cheers once again
its a grand movie
we were really enjoyed and learnt something
hi aamir u r a creator like mr. bhansali
u r too good .aap sada khush rahien aur isi tarah li outstanding movies create karte rahen
Hi Meeta Ji,
It was a week ago I watched the movie Taare Zameen Par and a week after that I thought to read some of the reviews regarding the movie. So, I just google searched for the movie review and right now I am extremely delighted to get your site full of well written reviews regarding the hindi movies.
The way you scrutinize every details of the film and the way you critically analysize every aspect of the film have most drawn my attention.
So, from now onwards I have decided to go through your movie review before watching the movie.
Hats off to your effort.
Thanks Sailesh!
its been a very good story in which it has been told about children that all are not the same every child has some weak & strong points also that everyone has different thinking & way of expressing also the parents should look forward to the child and his problems
it is a very touching movie. darsheel and amir khan did fantastic job

hi this movie is just mirrror of my life till now
when i saw this moivie i just rembered my childhood that passed these years me too dyslecic
wonderful movie...theres no doubt AAMIR is the best actor but he proved it again by directing such a amazing movie...keep it up,,,,hope u dont direct the same story line again....can watch it once,,,something new...
it's one of the best movie in indian cinema. amir gives great film to us.its proud of indian cinema.
I dont know hindi fluently,i saw this movie in DVD with english titles. The movie created by aamir and team is master piece of indian cinema. I am unable to come out of the feelings created by ishaan.Merem ma song is marvellous. All parents must see.
Nice movie,good story,direction and acting.
One of the glitches I felt in the movie (while watching for the third time) is
when Aamir's character asks Rajan (while waiting for the art competition to start) where Ishaan is? Rajan answers that Ishaan left
early from hostel before anyone got up. How come Rajan knew about this? We knew that he lived
in the staff quarters and not in the hostel..(it can be argued that he came to know this from another student..but
it felt like this was something that the director overlooked).
Ok, you got me. that was probably one of the greatest movie i have ever seen. TAARE ZAMEEN PAR
I watched this wonderful movie on an "Emirates flight" from Dubai to Los Angeles. One of the very best movies I have ever watched. I could not hold my tears back especially the tears of joy at the ending. Deserves all awards including the "Oscar" to encourage Hollywood and Bollywood to produce more such moveis instead of worthless "Jishum .... Jishum" craps.
D BESST MOVIE EVA!!!!!!!!!!!
NO ONE CAN LIKE DIS MOVIE AS MUCH AS I DO!!
JUST HANG YOUR SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRTE N WATCH THIS... THIS MASTERPIECE.
Aamir Khan's charm and brilliance has worked yet again. It's not just a movie,it's an advice to follow for generations to come.
this is a must watch movie.tears start rolling down when you look at that kid.
great movie!
i like Tare Zameen Par a nice flim,no words to tell about it a good story good direction .i am an fan of Aamir Khan.
this movie was in my heart and it is still there. In the modern world we have a lot of problems to accept each other for who and what they are. We need develop then skills. Because only then can we live peacefully
best movie ever. cant help but to feel attached to Ishaan. very good acting for darsheel. hhe succesfully engraved his character in our minds and heart. a must see movie for all parents, teachers and students. this is a classic. Ive seen this movie here in the philippines a few days ago and i just cant shrug off my mind the character ishaan. missed my nephew a lot who looks like ishaan
The movie was very an inspirational. Every scene tuoched and soften my heart that i cried hard enough to heaven. the connotes a hearstring and awaken the minds of the teachers who cant understand the individual dirrences. i really love the movie, is best movie i ever seen.I felt so much better after watching the movie. The movie which a child may or may not understand but one which every parent/teacher should watch to understand their child. i recommend this movie to all, spicially the teachers.
I have seen many hindi movies about the plight of children Mother India was the most powerful, this particular movie has delivered strong messages about the misfortunes and suffering of childern was again.
Aamir Khan is an actor whom I rate very highly as his ability to adapt into character and carry the strong screen prescence is unprecendented amongst the modern Indian film stars. He is definitely one of my favourites his apperance in Lagaan was top notch.

i am shoked with the type of dieses which showout in this movie.
1. Ishaan's father has been shown as a reckless and emotionless person, he himself could have changed Ishaan if he had shown love n care to him right from start. Just because he wears a Coat/Suit/Speaks english/drives car & carries laptop/ does not mean he is a professional.
2. Why should Ishaan wake up and leave the hostel @ such a dawn time, is it to enjoy nature to get a grip of what he has to make for his painting ?
3. Why does Nandu's dialogue so vague in the House scene, when he asks Ram Shankar, whether his son is not normal and retarded, when Aamir denies this, Vipin himself asks what'z the use of paintings as acc.to him it useless which means he makes up his mind that he is a retard in a indirect way.
After watching movie several times in the Native language, I could clearly make out, the subject's father (Vipin Sharma) has been portrayed as a 21st Century very demanding, impatient and cocky personality, who has no patience to listen to excuses and feels kids should study on their own, even a Single weekend getaway with his textbooks/notebooks could have made him figure out what the problem could possibly be, had he been more lenient and friendly, I am sure Ishan would have opened up with his problem of stating the LETTERS ARE DANCING. His Dad was only demanding, never gave him a chance to speak up,
