Straight
quick review:
It must be some kind of an art form to not be able to utilize Vinay Pathak's brilliance as an actor. Meanwhile the jokes given to him range from sad to bad.
This page has additional observations, other than the ones noted in the main review.
Plot Summary
Pinu Patel (Vinay Pathak) and his family are out to find him a bride. Except that he is not sure. Of whether he wants a bride or not.
What Worked
- The overall concept.
- Vinay Pathak's blank look in the "hum se hi jo churaye" song. Brilliant.
- Renu (Gul Panag) using reverse psychology to get Pinu to grow a spine.
- A few things that the story avoided are noteworthy - like say the Kamlesh's sexual orientation.
- The art design of the restaurant and Kamlesh's house.
What did not
Note: This section simply lists the things that I did not like in this movie. This
is not the overall impression about this movie. Please read the
full review here
- The stereotypical cases of arranged marriage shown to describe the process.
- Why does Vinay Pathak need to cover his face and cry? Whenever I see that I feel that the actor couldn't make himself cry. Difficult to believe that's true of Vinay, though
- Dry maple leaves floating on screen and fall signifying the sorrow of the character. Aren't we past that phase already?
- Why couldn't Rajat pronounce 'virginity' properly?
- Kamlesh's dubbing was so off? Looked like someone else's voice was used to dub for the actor. An annoying voice at that.
- None of the stand-up comedy jokes.
- Vinay Pathak's laughter when he laughs at himself for the first time. The concept was nice but the laughter sounded too fake. Also, the flashback felt too short to induce such a long laughter.
- The rose animation right after the film resumes after interval.
Nitty-Gritty
This section lists things that I think are not important to the overall impact of the movie. In most cases, it could be explained away by something like, "we noticed the glitch after the scene was shot and there were schedule/budget issues and thus we could not re-shoot it". I like giving the makers the benefit of doubt, but I am amused nevertheless. Hopefully, they will tickle you too.
- Vinay Pathak's shirts and sweaters were really smart.
- A steel glass in a bachelor's house in London? Also he was brought up there. Very, grudgingly, we can let that pass.
- The guitarist's t-shirt in the "hum se hi jo churaye" song was nice.
