Rockstar

wogma rating: Watch when on TV (?)
quick review: Rockstar...underwhelming. Ranbir Kapoor portrays the pathos suffered in an epic, romantic tragedy. Unfortunately, that and of course Rahman's music are the only things that are epic about Rockstar. Other than that, it is an abrupt collage of images of awesomely shot rock shows and an attempt of a man and woman trying to find a place for their morals which the rest of the world finds misplaced. Underwhelming - is the word that keeps coming back to me ever since I left the theater.

Nikhil:

Movie will be great....

Rahul:

Watch "Socha Na Tha". And I think Rockstar will be great. Another reason to believe so is Taran Adarsh's review - it seems he could not understand the movie. :)

Rahul:

:(. I was expecting a lot from this.

meetu:

@Nikhil I thought so too,

@Rahul yeah, me too! :( Well, anyway as promised, I watched "Socha Na Tha" and it had some brilliant moments. And as far as understanding the movie, there wasn't anything very mystic about it.

Anand Mandalika:

Thanks a ton for this review, Meetu. You just saved me about a thousand bucks :) After the huge disappointment that Mausam was, I decided to wait for your review before rucsh to the advance booking counter. And it looks like it was very well worth the wait. I'll buy a couple of good DVDs with this week's movie budget ;)

meetu:

@Anand Glad to be of service :P Though I must say it is not as bad as Mausam. But, yeah you could wait for it to be on TV/cable.

sunny:

good yar!!!ranbir rockkkkkssssss

amit:

Totally disagree, movie was amongst the best films to come out in recent times. Yes, it had many unanswered questions as pointed out by you, but instead of answering those questions, the director decided to focus on the journey of Janardhan to Jordan, which was far more interesting and hear touching. A brilliantly directed movie, with the same script, most film makers would have made a mess of the films, but Imtiaz managed to pull it out well. And well Nargis is a talent to watch out for.

Sumith:

Hey meetu . I loved the movie ! I'm a hardcore movie maniac and keep posting my opinions on movies on fb but this is my first attempt at a proper review and i've started with Rockstar. Please check out my blog link and let me know what you think. Your precious advice will be of great help to me.

Rachit Gupta:

Hi Meetu,
I completely agree with you about the movie could have been linear as opposed to the non-linear style adopted by Ali. However, its his treatment of the subject matter that stands out and marks him as a special talent than others. I dont understand music! But i do understand the passion that people have for it! I also could fathom the protagonists' frustration as they achieved one passion at the cost of other! I liked the movie and will just say that its a one time watch at least!!! Obviously sadda haq should be enjoyed on a big screen and what about Barbad karien alfaaz mere!!!

Anuj:

I would like to know how u calculate the average 'external review rating'(2.7 in this case). I'm in a dilema regarding ur average rating for DELHI BELLY(4.9/5). I'm sure all the reviewers have not given that movie a 4.5-5 star rating.

Rabheer:

Ranbir Kapooor, ImtiaZ Ali and of course A R Rahman combination of trio did a exemplary job, specially musical genious of this century of this world A R Rahman to be mentioned for the grand success of ROCKSTAR. Kudos to the entire team for the superb film for which the entire indian audience is longing for so many years.Ranbir Rocks.what a awesome movie. After a long long time a deadly combination of script, music & talent of entire cast can be seen.I think Imtiaz Ali has given a lifetime role to Ranbir& established himself in & as an intellegent, talented list of Director, who has the ability of moulding the Actors in his moulds. Also not to forget Nargis a fresh begining of any actoress.A R Rehman's magic...phir chal gaya.

Shilpa:

Hi Meetu, very nice review.

I have watched the film and loved Ranbir Kapoor's work... sadly cant say the same about the movie. Giving due credit to Imtiaz Ali, I feel that the journey of the character was portrayed beautifully.
Reminded me of Madhur bhadarkar's fashion.

rashmi:

You are very right. Why did the director intersperse the scenes?I could not figure out why the police were beating him up at Prague..and did you notice the uncanny resemblance to Sonu Nigam?

meetu:

@Amit I'm fascinated by the reactions of people who have loved the movie. They loved it so much that they don't mind the flaws. Exactly, the thing that happens with me, when I love a film. I'm actually sad, that the flaws in the story were overpowering for me. Oh well...

@Sumith aawww! Thank you so much... keep writing.

@Rachit I'm so glad that you enjoyed the film.

@Anuj here's the explanation - http://wogma.com/to-each-his-own/#external_reviews Let me know if you need any further qualification.

@Shilpa true...

@Rashmi well, it's their creative choice and i guess he envisioned it in a certain way and there are people who loved it. Sad that it didn't work for us :(

Sumith:

Hey meetu. You did appreciate the gesture but you did'nt actually give me an opinion about my review..

Anuj:

Okay. Thanks for the info :) btw Its amusing that you called the disaster called Ra.One a lot more 'bearable' than Krrish. At least Krrish did not pretend to be a kids movie. Ra.One is a pathetic piece of nonsense which uses disgusting gay jokes and crass one liners all in the name of entertainment. Krrish is way better than this. And lets not even compare the physique and body language of Hrithik-the superhero and SRK-the superhero(a very old one at that :P).

Anuj:

But your criticism of Krrish didn't come as a surprise to me considering that u aren't much of a Roshan fan. No wonder u even criticized his masterpiece of a performance in Jodha Akbar and his unlikable,under-rated performance in ZNMD(mainly due to the grey character he portrayed in the first half of the movie).

Dattaprasad Godbole:

Liked everything in "Rockstar", well almost everything... Nargis Fakhri still has some distance to cover acting wise but she looked God Awesome (maano jaise Pakistani Angelina Jolie).

But its a hard to like film... coz its not what you expect... its not a rags to riches story, it doesn't have a political message, Hero isn't sympathetic, the love story doesn't fit in moral framework and what not. I understand the anger towards it, although those exactly are the points which make me admire it.

[P.S: I would've liked to defend the movie... but it would mean I have to give some part of movie away; Kaash, private discussion rakh sakte wogma pe. Either that or a public one with SPOILER alert.]

Mudit Singhal:

Meetu, you've been quite blatant in your review..and I've seen such kind from you after a long time..looks like you wanted the film to be good so badly (probably after a drought of good movies, the expectations were high, as you've already expressed)...the same was the case with me...even while watching the film, I was impressed with the premise it began with and I so wanted it to make reach a crescendo towards the end...but somehow it didn't...and you used the right word for it "underwhelming"..something that began like a trip of a lifetime ended up like a tame ride...what gave me some high were the lyrics, which I hadn't noticed particularly before the film (probably 'coz I heard the music in passing most of the times)...the lyrics, music and the stage acts (all of them gave me a Jim Morrison-ish feel)did promise me that the story around these will be as intoxicating...but somehow it didn't...so in a nutshell, for me, if this film was released just as a music video album, I would hail it as the best hindi music video album in recent times...leave me with the lyrics, the music and RK's stage acts and I'd imagine the rest...but no, don't leave me with the film!

Divya:

I'd like to say that this is the kind of movie that feels different to each viewer so people jumping to conclusions really doesnt make sense. Actually some of your questions are rather personal in the sense that its just an individual's thought(Which is what u've written) but a lot of others have found sufficient reasons to believe the explanations provided in the movie. Like why is JJ tolerated -well dont we have people like Salman in the industry who is equally misunderstood and misrepresented? Dont people love to watch him, its the same in the case of JJ. Again the bhabhi angle was an unique touch, a sure shot way of alienation. Its not a perfect film, but it has elements that takes it to a higher level. I would recommend watching the movie and then deciding for u never know, this may just be your story.

meetu:

@Sumith sent an e-mail :D

@Anuj for me a film is over and above my love/dislike of its main "star" I liked Hrithik in ZNMD, I liked SRK in Chak De - and yet i'm not at all a "fan" of either of their acting skills, far from it.

@Datta ho jaaye! shoot an e-mail [email protected] :D

@Mudit I thought all my reviews were blatant :D Anyway, we agree on this one. I have yet to buy the audio CD so still haven't given the songs a repeated listen, which they so do deserve.

@Divya true, very true. And actually it's true of every film or i'd take a step further and say every piece of art. It is indeed a relationship between the audience and the author.

Anuj:

As for Rockstar, its a totally over-rated and melodramatic piece of nonsense(as expected from Imtiaz Ali,bollywood's biggest drama queen after Karan Johar). Ranbir's fit for only the silly mushy romantic roles. Bollywood desperately needs a lot more of Vishal Bharadwaj's and Anurag Kashyap's.

Perx:

I respectfully disagree.. I'll point out the most obvious thing here though.. Sadda Haq is not about Tibet, the environment or worldly issues.. it's about him asking for his right to live the way he wants to live.. it's very internal.. If you want to read my entire interpretation of the film, perx.wordpress.com/2011/11/24/imtiaz-rockstar/

or Sudish Kamath's review..which i personally recommend you should read if you want to understand what the movie is about: sudhishkamath.com/2011/11/18/rockstar-in-search-of-the-free-bird/

Parikshit:

Meetu,I used to like your reviews gal!! then you positively reviewed Force ( and thats the sole reason i watched that horrible nonsense) .. and now you are criticizing this piece of art. What is outstanding about Rockstar is a brilliant portrayal of an anguish..despite the lead actress being way off the mark. Making of a Jordan...Breaking of a Jordan.. loved it totally!!

Siddhartha Chowdhury:

Hi meetu you are wrong totally wrong ,this is a awesome movie..the concept is so good ,u rated Ranbir 3.5 he is 5 out of 5...i am totally disagree with your reply...Mr Anand Mandalika sorry to say every thing u decide like that ,first see the movie then put your comments....trust on your own view not others....
I will say please watch this movie its a awesome movie ,movie of the year don miss it..this movie is for all movie lovers not for critics thanks.....please stay away from this movie don spoil it...

meetu:

@Perx Yes, it is obvious 'sadda haq' is not about any of these things, but the way JJ's character has been built, i don't see him using any of these to comment either, it comes across as the director's angst, not the character's and "for effect". I will read Sudhish Kamath's review in a bit but even before I do so, I must point out, that I completely respect his opinion as do yours. It's a matter of what you like and what you are willing to forgive because of how much you have liked what you liked. A movie-watching experience is always about this, isn't it?

@Pariksht Sorry to disappoint, boss. But this review is an accumulation of thoughts just after watching the film and for the few hours after that - underwhelming

@Siddhartha Unfortunately, it comes across as I rated Ranbir Kapoor as 3.5. I actually rate him as 5 and the other person that makes the "lead cast" a 0, so the average should've actually been 2.5, but I felt that was too harsh on Ranbir, thus bumped him up to more than 5/5. Actually, in the same vein I should have bumped it down again to give Nargis negative points, but...let it go.
